Residents across parts of Western, Upstate Central New York are being urged to take precautions as state officials issue an air quality alert for elevated ozone levels.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) announced the advisory on Wednesday, warning of potentially harmful air conditions through 11pm. The affected regions include Niagara, Orleans, Genesee, Wyoming, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Northern and Southern Erie, and Sullivan counties. Cities such as Buffalo, Niagara Falls, Batavia, Jamestown, and Monticello are also included.

Officials say the Air Quality Index (AQI) is expected to surpass 100 in these areas, which are levels that could pose health concerns for sensitive individuals, including children, the elderly, and people with heart or lung issues.

Those in vulnerable groups are advised to avoid intense physical activity outdoors during this time. Individuals experiencing symptoms like shortness of breath are encouraged to seek medical attention.

To stay informed on current air quality conditions, visit the DEC's official website at dec.ny.gov or access real-time updates via https://on.ny.gov/nyaqi.

The DEC's Air Quality Hotline can be reached at (800) 535-1345.
