The Lackawanna City School District announced Wednesday that it has opened an investigation into a staff member’s social media activity connected to the recent death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
In a statement posted on its website, the district said the staff member and/or teacher allegedly made a “concerning” post that was “reported to express approval” of Kirk’s shooting death. Kirk, 32, was fatally shot on September 10th while speaking at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah.
District officials emphasized that the review is being carried out “in accordance with district policy and applicable law” and pledged to take “appropriate action, if necessary.”
They did not disclose whether the staff member under scrutiny is a teacher or another employee.
“As with all personnel matters, the District is required to comply with state and federal laws governing employee privacy and confidentiality,” the district’s statement read. “Accordingly, we will not be able to comment further on the details of the investigation or its outcome.”
Tyler Robinson, 22, has been charged in connection with Kirk’s death. He faces counts including aggravated murder and could face the death penalty if convicted. Robinson appeared in court for the first time Tuesday.
