Authorities have confirmed that human remains found in June within Rocky Mountain National Park belong to a man from Upstate/Western New York.
According to the Larimer County Coroner’s Office, the individual has been identified as 40-year-old Steven Noto.
Officials stated that “he was positively and scientifically identified through dental record comparison,” following extensive investigative efforts.
The remains were discovered late on June 18th along the Alpine Ridge Trail near Trail Ridge Road. Park spokesperson Kyle Patterson noted the discovery was made by a 12-year-old boy from Illinois who was visiting the area with his family. They had planned to hike to the Alpine Visitor Center when the remains were found.
Due to the advanced state of decomposition - “mostly skeletonized” - at the time of discovery, the coroner’s office reported that a cause and manner of death could not be determined.
However, based on the condition of the remains and the subsequent investigation, authorities believe Noto likely died in late November 2024. The coroner confirmed that foul play has been ruled out.
The National Park Service is continuing to lead the investigation into the circumstances surrounding Noto’s death.
No further information is available at this time.
