With playoff hockey back in Western New York for the first time in more than a decade, one longtime Niagara Falls bakery is tapping into the excitement with a creative, team-inspired product.
As the Buffalo Sabres prepare for their opening-round matchup on Sunday, DiCamillo Bakery is introducing a limited-edition “Sabre Bread,” a sword-shaped loaf designed to celebrate the team’s postseason return. The specialty item, crafted from the bakery’s traditional Italian bread, stretches roughly 20 to 22 inches and features a baguette-style look with poppy seeds forming the handle. It is available exclusively at DiCamillo locations across Niagara and Erie counties.
The idea, according to company leadership, came together as the Sabres’ Cinderrella season unfolded and enthusiasm began building across the region. Internally, the bakery had been discussing a hockey-themed item and ultimately decided to create something unique that visually tied into the team’s identity.
The goal, they said, was to give fans something fun to rally around during the playoff run.
This isn’t the first time the bakery has leaned into local sports momentum. In past years, it produced hockey-themed sugar cookies during deep Sabres playoff runs in the mid-2000s along with Bills-themed bread loaves colored in red, white and blue.
The Sabre Bread is priced at $21.99 and demand has quickly outpaced expectations. Early batches sold out almost immediately, prompting the bakery to ramp up production and encourage customers to place orders in advance either online or by phone.
In addition to the signature loaf, the bakery is also offering other hockey-themed treats during the playoff push including decorated sugar cookies and brownie “pucks,” giving fans multiple ways to celebrate the return of postseason hockey.
