Father from Upstate New York Found Dead, Daughter Still Missing After Hiking Trip

A hiking trip in Maine has ended in tragedy for a father and daughter from Ulster Park, New York. Officials confirmed that the body of 58-year-old Tim Keiderling was discovered near the summit of Mount Katahdin while his daughter, 28-year-old Esther Keiderling, remains missing.

The pair began their hike on the morning of June 1st after departing from Abol Campground. Their plan was to ascend Mount Katahdin, which is Maine’s tallest peak at 5,269 feet. They were last spotted around 10:15am heading toward the summit, but failed to return.

Concern grew when their vehicle was found unattended at the trailhead. Maine rangers launched a search early Monday, which was expanded on Tuesday to include more than 30 Maine Game Wardens, K9 units, ground search crews, helicopters from the Maine Forest Service, and support from the Maine Army National Guard.

On Tuesday night, the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife announced that Tim Keiderling’s body had been located by a Warden Service K9 in the Tableland area, not far from Katahdin’s peak.

Search and rescue operations continue for Esther Keiderling whose whereabouts and condition remain unknown.
