Indicted Attorney General Letitia James Sheltering Criminal Adult Film Star in Virginia Homes Tied to Mortgage Probe

New York Attorney General Letitia James, already staring down a federal indictment, is once again embroiled in controversy. It was revealed this week that her Virginia houses are doubling as safe havens for family members with criminal histories. Both residences, already linked to federal mortgage fraud allegations, have been home to relatives facing charges ranging from theft to weapons violations.

Court filings confirm that James’ 21-year-old grandniece, Cayla Thompson-Hairston, an OnlyFans performer with explicit online content, was charged in April 2024 for lying about her prior criminal record while trying to buy a firearm in Suffolk, Virginia. Prosecutors said she was prohibited from purchasing the gun because of a past felony malicious wounding charge, an offense in Virginia involving intent to maim or kill. The gun case collapsed only after officials determined her earlier charge had been reduced to a misdemeanor.

Cayla’s legal problems trace back to her mid-teens, when she was swept up in the antics of her older sister, Nakia Thompson. Now 36, Nakia is officially listed as an “absconder” in North Carolina, meaning she skipped probation and is wanted as a fugitive. Officials say she was convicted on misdemeanor counts of assault and trespassing but “willfully avoided probation supervision.” Nakia’s record also includes guilty pleas to grand and petit larceny tied to a 2019 shoplifting scheme where she allegedly involved Cayla and even brought along children during the crime.

Despite those histories, both Nakia and Cayla have lived in properties tied to James.

James purchased a Norfolk home in 2020 for $137,000 certifying it as a “second home” on her mortgage paperwork. Federal prosecutors now accuse her of immediately moving Nakia into the house rent-free and profiting from a lower mortgage rate, which netted her a savings of about $19,000.

James has never lived there.

Cayla and her mother, Shamice Thompson-Hairston, reside in a separate James-owned home in Virginia that has also raised red flags. On that property, James signed loan documents stating it would be her “principal residence,” which is the focus of her indictment given that she lived full-time in New York. James later insisted it was a clerical error and amended the record.

Adding to the family’s notoriety, Cayla has cultivated a social media persona flaunting money, explicit photos, and recently posted videos of her pregnancy.

A Virginia grand jury has indicted James on bank fraud and false statement charges tied directly to these mortgage applications in the last two weeks. If convicted, she could face up to 60 years in prison.

Still, James has refused to back down. Speaking defiantly at a campaign rally for New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, she declared:

“I stand on solid rock and I will not bow, I will not break, I will not bend.”

Her attorney, Abbe Lowell, brushed aside the charges as “meritless” and politically motivated. Lowell previously represented Hunter Biden in his federal criminal cases.

Progressive allies have rushed to her defense, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez who urged supporters to donate to James defense fund.
