New York Attorney General Letitia James, already under federal indictment, is facing fresh scrutiny for providing housing to multiple family members with criminal records at her Virginia properties - homes that themselves have been flagged in federal investigations.
Court records show that James’ 21-year-old grand-niece, Cayla Thompson-Hairston, an OnlyFans model with an explicit online presence, was charged in April 2024 for lying about her criminal record while attempting to purchase a firearm in Suffolk, Virginia. Cayla was barred from owning a weapon because of a prior felony malicious wounding charge, though prosecutors later dropped the weapons case after discovering the earlier offense had been reduced to a misdemeanor.
This was not Cayla’s first brush with the law. At 15 she was entangled in the criminal activities of her older sister, Nakia Thompson, who is currently wanted in North Carolina for probation violations. Thompson, who has a history of arrests for assault and larceny, has been classified as an “absconder” by the state’s Department of Corrections. This means she is effectively a fugitive.
Despite these records, both sisters have lived at James-owned homes in Norfolk, Virginia, properties at the center of allegations that the state’s top prosecutor falsified mortgage records.
James purchased one Norfolk property in 2020 for $137,000, telling her lender it would be a “second home.” Federal prosecutors now allege she quickly moved Nakia Thompson into the house rent-free, benefiting from a lower interest rate she should not have received. The alleged misrepresentation, prosecutors say, allowed James to gain nearly $19,000.
Neighbors told reporters James does not reside at the property herself.
Meanwhile, Cayla and her mother, Shamice Thompson-Hairston, live in another of James' property, one for which she signed documents asserting it would be her “principal residence” despite working and living over 300 miles away in New York. James later claimed the paperwork was a mistake and amended it, but federal investigators still flagged the mortgage arrangement.
The Thompson family’s record extends back years. In 2019, both Cayla and Nakia were arrested in connection with a shoplifting scheme at Macy’s and Dillard’s. Court documents say Nakia even brought Cayla’s two children along for the theft, leading to charges of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. She later pleaded guilty to grand and petit larceny.
These revelations come as James faces her own legal battles. A Virginia grand jury recently indicted her on charges of bank fraud and making false statements to secure mortgage loans tied to these very properties. If convicted, she could face up to 60 years in prison.
Still, James continues to project defiance. At a recent rally for New York mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, she declared: “I stand on solid rock and I will not bow, I will not break, I will not bend.”
Her attorney, Abbe Lowell, has dismissed the charges as a politically motivated attack orchestrated by Donald Trump and called them “meritless.” Yet Lowell himself has become a lightning rod, having also represented controversial figures such as Hunter Biden.
Meanwhile, James’ campaign has leaned on support from progressive allies like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez who urged donors to “rush” contributions to James following her indictment. The Attorney General’s re-election war chest reportedly swelled by $1 million in the days after the charges were announced.
