A tragic incident occurred last weekend when a man lost his life after jumping off a bridge while swimming in Upstate New York.
According to New York State Police, Conner S. Hendershot was swimming with friends around 3:28pm Saturday when he jumped from a bridge into the water near State Route 72 in Parishville, a small town located in St. Lawrence County at the edge of the Adirondack Park.
Troopers reported that after entering the water, Hendershot did not resurface.
Emergency crews from the Parishville Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene and located the 20-year-old underwater.
Efforts to revive Hendershot by St. Lawrence County sheriff’s deputies and Parishville EMTs, but were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at the scene by a county coroner, officials said.
Authorities say the investigation into his death is ongoing.
Multiple agencies assisted with the search including dive teams from the Massena, Potsdam, Hopkinton Fort-Jackson, and Lisbon fire departments.
Hendershot’s death marks the second drowning in the Adirondack region within a two-day span and the third since July 6th.
Just two days earlier, 28-year-old Tyler Shoemaker of Cobleskill died while swimming in Schroon Lake, located in Essex County. Shoemaker, who was expecting a daughter.
These incidents came only days after 24-year-old Vickram Roopnarine drowned in Great Sacandaga Lake while trying to reach his girlfriend after their inflatable boat overturned.
