Universities across New York State are grappling with a bizarre and troubling trend in which students are recording and sharing videos of themselves urinating in public spaces on campus.
The clips, many of which have surfaced under the hashtag #SUNYpissers, have been linked to several institutions including Syracuse University, the University at Albany (UAlbany), and Cornell University.
At UAlbany, some videos appear to capture students urinating on the school’s football field and on benches inside academic buildings. Several of the clips have attracted hundreds of thousands of views online, raising alarm among students, faculty, and local residents.
University officials say they are taking the incidents seriously. Investigations are underway and reminders are being given to students about both the legal and disciplinary consequences of such behavior.
Policies at all of the schools prohibit public urination and disorderly conduct. Violators could face penalties that include fines and school-imposed discipline. In New York, public urination in spaces open to the public is illegal with fines ranging from $250 to $500 for repeat offenses.
