Meteorologists are sounding the alarm for residents of New York State as forecasts indicate an active and potentially dangerous Atlantic hurricane season. With storm activity expected to surpass average levels, officials are encouraging early preparation to ensure safety.

The Atlantic hurricane season officially begins on June 1 and runs through November 30. This year, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) estimates a 60% likelihood of a season that exceeds typical storm activity, with only a 10% chance of below-normal conditions. These projections follow a record-setting 2024 season and are raising concern across the East Coast, including New York.

Emergency management agencies are urging the public to be prepared, stressing that readiness efforts should begin now before any potential storm strikes. Building an emergency kit is a key part of that preparation.

Here’s a recommended list of essential items to include in your emergency kit:

-Water: One gallon per person per day to cover drinking and basic sanitation needs.

-Non-perishable food: Choose ready-to-eat or easy-to-prepare items with long shelf lives.

-Flashlight: A reliable light source is vital during power outages.

-Battery-powered or hand-crank radio: Stay informed if communication networks go down.

-Spare batteries: Ensure your flashlights and radios stay operational.

-First aid kit: Essential for treating minor injuries when medical help may be delayed.

-Cell phone and charger: Include a portable power bank or backup battery as well.

-Cash: Power outages may disable ATMs and card readers, making cash transactions necessary.

-Important documents: Copies of IDs, insurance papers, and medical records should be stored in waterproof packaging.

-Whistle: Useful for signaling for help in an emergency.

-Sanitation supplies: Toilet paper, garbage bags with ties, and hygiene products like soap, toothbrushes, and feminine products.

-Manual can opener: Important for accessing canned food when electricity isn’t available.

-Spare clothing: A change of clothes for each household member is advised.

-Duct tape and plastic sheeting: Can be used to seal off spaces during shelter-in-place orders.

Authorities continue to monitor tropical storm developments and advise the public to stay informed through official weather channels and local emergency services.
