North Tonawanda High School Senior Returns to Classroom Months After Life-saving Liver Transplant

A North Tonawanda High School senior who endured a sudden and life-threatening medical emergency late last year has returned to school after months of recovery following a liver transplant that saved her life.

Meredith Roberts returned to the classroom Thursday, March 12th, marking a major milestone in her recovery after being away from school since November when she experienced sudden liver failure.

Roberts said the ordeal began unexpectedly when she noticed severe symptoms that quickly escalated into a medical crisis.

Within days, doctors determined that she needed an immediate transplant in order to survive. She received a donor liver on November 15th, a procedure that ultimately saved her life.

The transplant required Roberts and her family to spend an extended period in Pittsburgh while she underwent surgery and began the recovery process. Over the past several months she has gradually regained strength while adapting to life after surgery.

Roberts described the recovery as a process of adjusting to a “new normal,” slowly returning to everyday routines and rebuilding her health.

Before becoming ill, Roberts had been preparing for sectional competitions as part of the North Tonawanda High School swim program. Although the medical emergency abruptly ended those plans, she has already returned to the pool as part of her recovery.

With approval from her surgeon, Roberts began swimming again in early January at a facility in Pittsburgh–only about seven weeks after her transplant. The quick return to the water is admirable as transplant patients typically take longer before resuming athletic activities.

Her recovery has not been entirely without complications. Doctors recently treated a brief episode of organ rejection which required a liver biopsy and adjustments to her medication regimen. The issue was addressed quickly and she was able to continue her recovery without needing to be admitted to the hospital. Roberts credited the medical team that treated her during the crisis, including surgeons, physicians, and hospital staff who were involved in her care throughout the transplant process.

Her family has also emphasized the enormous level of support they received from the community during the ordeal. Friends, classmates, and supporters from across the region – and even around the country – reached out with prayers, encouragement, and well wishes during the months Roberts spent recovering.

Returning to school after four months away is another important step for Roberts as she works to resume a normal senior year. She expressed excitement about seeing friends, teachers, and school staff members who had been supporting her during her absence.

Despite returning to many normal activities, the transplant journey will continue for the rest of her life. Roberts will require ongoing medical monitoring including weekly lab work and follow-up appointments as doctors track the health of her transplanted liver and adjust medications as needed.

Even with those long-term medical responsibilities, Roberts has already begun reestablishing her routine, balancing recovery with school and athletics. She remains on track to graduate in June.
