Rare Black Squirrels Are Everywhere at Niagara Falls State Park

Rare black squirrels are everywhere at Niagara Falls, Devils Hole State Park, Whirlpool State Park.

From viewing the Horseshoe Falls from Terrapin Point on Goat Island, the Bridal Viel Falls from Luna Island, or the American Falls from from Prospect Point, there are unforgettable views everywhere at Niagara Falls.

Not to be forgotten though are the hundreds of animals that call Niagara Falls State Park their home. In fact, there are said to be over 1,000 species in Niagara Falls / the Niagara Gorge encompassing birds, mammals, reptiles, and more! Of them all, there is hardly a more popular animal at Niagara Falls than the black squirrel.

At first glance one might say the black squirrel resembles the Eastern Grey Squirrel, which would make sense as they are in fact the same species. The only difference (as you can see) is black fur caused by a genetic mutation passed from generation to generation.

The black squirrel is the rarest of all squirrel species - accounting for only 1 out of every 10,000 squirrels. Despite this, there are thousands of black squirrels who call the Niagara Region home and can be seen at all the most popular tourist destinations (Niagara Falls State Park, along the Niagara Gorge, Whirlpool State Park, Devils Hole State Park, and etc.).

Make sure to be on the lookout for these rare critters during your trip to Niagara Falls!
