A powerful tornado tore through the Great Valley area in Upstate New York Monday evening leaving behind a trail of destruction and shocking residents with its sudden force.
The National Weather Service confirmed that the tornado struck between 5:30 and 6pm with the brunt of the impact felt in Great Valley, just outside Ellicottville, New York. Trees were uprooted, buildings suffered structural damage, and debris scattered across roads and properties. Dozens of utility poles were snapped, knocking out power to hundreds of residents.
Emergency responders quickly established a command post at the Great Valley Volunteer Fire Hall. According to county officials, nearly 20 utility poles were brought down creating hazardous conditions that initially delayed damage assessments. Crews from National Grid were on-site with at least a dozen teams working to restore service and clear blocked areas.
One delivery vehicle was reportedly caught in the storm with a FedEx van lifted and thrown into a ditch by the force of the wind. Thankfully, the driver was unharmed. Despite the extensive property damage, no serious injuries have been reported.
