Third-Grade Student Struck by Car on Way to Bus Stop

A third-grade student from Martin Road Elementary in the Lackawanna City School District was injured after being hit by a vehicle while heading to the bus stop earlier this week.

Superintendent of Schools Nadia A. Nashir confirmed the details in a message posted on the district’s website. She said the incident happened around 7:45am Thursday morning on Van Wyck Street. The child, who was accompanied by their father, was taken by ambulance to Oishei Children’s Hospital for treatment.

In her statement, Nashir said the district is awaiting more updates on the child’s condition and emphasized that the community’s thoughts remain with the student and their family.

She also urged parents to discuss the matter with their children thoughtfully and carefully.

“Your child may have a difficult time processing this news. We encourage you to talk with them in an age-appropriate manner. When discussing a friend being hit by a car, it’s important to approach the conversation with care and sensitivity,” Nashir wrote.

This morning, before the school day, there was a traffic accident involving a car and a third-grade student at Martin Road Elementary. It happened while the child was walking to the bus stop on Van Wyck Street around 7:45am.
