Niagara Falls Police were on routine patrol around 2:20pm on May 5th when they observed a female traveling northbound on Portage Road on an electric mini cart.
They then observed another party wearing a Tops uniform and name tag chasing after the female. Officers turned around and made contact with the female suspect at Main Street and Lockport Road.
The suspect stated she was having a mental episode and did not even realize she left Tops with the electric cart. Based on the official police incident report, it does not appear police believed this story.
She also stated that all food in the cart was already in it when she left the store.
The Tops employee soon caught up to officers and the suspect and stated that the electric cart belonged to Tops as well as the food inside it.
The suspect was detained and placed in the rear of a patrol vehicle. Police transported her back to Tops where they were able to review store security footage and confirm that she exited the store without paying for the food as well as the cart.
The total value of stolen items was $2,530.
The suspect was transported to police headquarters for booking and processing. She was trespassed from all Tops locations.
No further information is available at this time.
