Western New York Teen Faces Difficult Recovery After Devastating Crash

A Western New York teenager is facing a long and difficult journey toward recovery following a serious crash in late March that left him critically injured. The victim, Lincoln Counihan, a student-athlete at Lancaster High School, was struck by a speeding vehicle while pulling out of his driveway resulting in severe trauma that has required numerous surgeries and intensive medical care.

Authorities charged 43-year-old Luke Darling in connection with the crash. Investigators allege that Darling was driving under the influence and at an excessive speed at the time of the incident. He now faces a felony charge of aggravated vehicular assault and could be sentenced to up to 15 years in prison if convicted. He remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in court again on June 4th.

The crash occurred on March 30th and left Lincoln trapped inside his vehicle for nearly an hour before emergency crews were able to extricate him. Since then, he has undergone 11 surgeries to repair extensive injuries including multiple fractures to his hips and legs. His recovery has involved a complex medical regimen and he is expected to undergo at least three more operations.

Despite the seriousness of his injuries, Lincoln has shown gradual signs of improvement. His family continues to stay hopeful and supportive focusing all their energy on his healing. Each small step forward in his rehabilitation is seen as a major milestone in what has become a life-altering experience.

As Lincoln continues his recovery, one of his personal goals is to regain enough strength and mobility to participate in his high school graduation ceremony.
