Wife’s Worst Fears Confirmed After Husband Found Dead at New York State Park

A late-night call from a worried wife set off an urgent search through the woods of Upstate New York that ended in heartbreak.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) confirmed that a missing hunter was found dead in Otsego County early Friday morning. According to officials, local authorities requested Forest Ranger assistance on October 16th after a woman reported her husband had failed to return from a hunting trip. The call for help came in just before 11pm.

Multiple agencies joined the search effort including the Otsego County Sheriff’s Office, Otsego County Emergency Services, the Garratsville and Laurens Fire Departments, New York State Police, and New York State Park Police, according to the DEC.

Search teams scoured the wooded areas surrounding Gilbert Lake State Park through the night. Around 3:30am the next morning, Otsego County Sheriff’s Deputy Thornhill and his team located the 67-year-old hunter in a tree stand deep in the forest.

The man, who was from Remsen in Oneida County, was pronounced dead at the scene.

DEC Forest Rangers used a rope system to safely recover the victim from the elevated stand and turned him over to the county coroner.

The cause of death is unknown.
