A woman was robbed of her vehicle at gunpoint Wednesday night, June 3rd, in the parking lot of the Wegmans on Transit Road in Williamsville according to police dispatch information and witness accounts.
The incident, which reportedly involved multiple masked suspects, sparked immediate panic among shoppers and the community as details circulated on social media and emergency communications.
According to information provided during a police dispatch call, officers were sent to the Wegmans parking lot following reports of an armed carjacking.
Investigators were told that a woman had been confronted by several masked males shortly after returning to her vehicle.
The suspects arrived in a BMW and approached the victim in the parking lot before displaying both a handgun and a knife.
Police were informed that the suspects took the woman’s keys and fled the scene in her black BMW sedan.
Authorities said the group left in two separate vehicles, including the stolen BMW and another vehicle described as a black Honda. Dispatch information also referenced a gray BMW sedan associated with the suspects.
Responding officers were told their direction of travel as the vehicles left the parking lot and headed along Transit Road.
The woman was not harmed during the encounter.
The brazen nature of the crime generated significant reaction online, particularly because it occurred in a busy commercial area frequently visited by families and shoppers.
One witness who claimed to have observed the incident described seeing a group of masked men waiting for the victim before confronting her and taking her vehicle at gunpoint.
The witness said the incident changed their perception of safety while shopping at night and urged others to remain alert and aware of their surroundings. The witness also stated that police indicated similar incidents have become more common in recent months.
Vehicle thefts have become a growing concern throughout Western New York with law enforcement agencies regularly reporting stolen vehicles recovered across Niagara and counties.
However, while many vehicle thefts occur when owners are asleep or away from their vehicles, armed carjackings involving direct confrontations with victims remain far less common.
Over the past several years, local police have responded to numerous calls from individuals who reported feeling followed or suspiciously watched while shopping at area retail destinations.
Niagara Action has reported several of these instances at shopping plazas in Niagara Falls after women commented on posts published to our social media page. They described first-hand accounts of being followed and even of males attempting to get them to enter their vehicles.
Police have not yet released information regarding possible arrests or whether the suspects have been identified.
Investigators are expected to review surveillance footage from Wegmans.
