A 14-year-old student is facing several serious charges following a lockdown at Sweet Home High School in Amherst last week, authorities confirmed Monday.
The teenager was arrested in connection with threats that led to an hours-long lockdown on May 13th. He has been charged with making a terrorist threat and making a threat of mass harm after false reports claimed a person with a gun was inside a school bathroom and that multiple explosive devices were present in the building. Amherst police conducted a thorough search and confirmed there was no credible danger to students or staff.
In addition to the threats, the student is also being charged in connection with separate incidents involving arson. During the week of May 11th, he allegedly started several fires, two of which caused property damage. As a result, he faces two counts of second-degree arson and two counts of second-degree criminal mischief.
Following the incident, the Sweet Home Central School District suspended the student and began disciplinary proceedings in accordance with school policy. Superintendent Michael Ginestre assured families and staff that the district is fully cooperating with the ongoing police investigation.
The student has been referred to Erie County Family Court. Due to the suspect’s age, authorities and school officials are withholding further details.
