Niagara Falls Police responded to Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center around 11:30am on October 12th after reports of an unwanted person.
Upon arrival, NFMMC staff told officers that Stephanie Hoffman was discharged after being treated medically and mentally. However, she was refusing to leave the hospital.
Officers attempted to de-escalate Hoffman who was extremely argumentative. Hoffman claimed that she wasn’t leaving and that officers would have to take her to jail.
Officers explained the process of an appearance ticket to Hoffman. She became angrier upon learning she would not be staying in jail even if arrested.
She said to an officer, “if I punch you in the face, I’ll get to stay in jail.” Officers explained to Hoffman that she would not.
She then started punching her hand. Officers believed that her actions were causing a public annoyance, alarm and disturbed hospital staff and patients. Due to Hoffman’s escalation and previous comments, officers did believe she might attack them.
Hoffman was placed under arrest and transported to police headquarters for booking and processing. However, she was still released on an appearance ticket due to only being charged with disorderly conduct.
