Man Fatally Shot by Police Outside Niagara Falls Hotel During Arrest Attempt

A 40-year-old man was shot and killed by a Toronto Police Officer Wednesday morning during an attempted arrest outside a Niagara Falls hotel, according to Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU).

The incident occurred at approximately 11:15am behind the Ramada hotel on Stanley Avenue.

Officers from the Repeat Offender Parole Enforcement (ROPE) squad were attempting to apprehend the individual for alleged parole violations.

Kristy Denette, spokesperson for the SIU, explained the circumstances leading up to the shooting.

“The male exited the Ramada and then officers moved in to arrest this individual and there was an interaction,” she said. “A Toronto Police Service officer who was seconded to this ROPE squad shot the man, and that man was taken to hospital, where he has been pronounced deceased.”

Authorities have not yet released the identity of the man, pending notification of his next of kin. Denette confirmed the individual was not from the local area.

During the incident, a Hamilton Police Officer was also seriously injured. Denette acknowledged the injury, but details regarding the specific nature of wound(s) is unknown.

The firearm involved in the shooting has been secured by SIU investigators. The agency assigned four investigators and two forensic investigators to the case.

When asked for more details about the encounter, Denette stated, “What happened just before shots were fired, that’s what the SIU is investigating.”

As for how the Hamilton officer was hurt, Denette said that information falls outside the SIU’s jurisdiction and would not be part of their investigation.

The SIU becomes involved in cases where a police officer’s actions result in death, serious injury, allegations of sexual assault, or the firing of a weapon at an individual.
