Man Indicted after Machete Murder

A man from Tonawanda has been formally indicted on charges of murder in connection with the death of another man following a machete attack in 2023. The case is being prosecuted by the Erie County District Attorney's Office.

Adalberto Bermudez, Jr., 46, is accused of fatally assaulting 39-year-old Jose Barreto-Gonzalez. The incident took place on September 23rd, 2023, inside Barreto-Gonzalez's apartment on Isabelle Street. Bermudez allegedly struck the victim multiple times with a machete.

Bermudez was not apprehended until November 9th, 2024, more than a year after the incident. He now faces a charge of second-degree murder which carries a potential sentence of 25 years to life in prison if he is found guilty.

Bermudez is scheduled to appear in court again on December 23rd as legal proceedings continue.
