Niagara Falls Man Pleads Guilty to Mailing Hundreds of Drug Packages, Faces Up to 40 Years

A Niagara Falls man admitted in federal court this week to operating a large-scale drug distribution scheme that relied on shipping narcotics through the mail, a case that could result in decades behind bars.

Edwin Miguel Batista, 46, entered a guilty plea to a narcotics conspiracy charge before U.S. Magistrate Judge H. Kenneth Schroeder Jr. The charge carries a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in prison and a maximum penalty of up to 40 years.

Federal prosecutors say the case centers on an operation that ran for weeks late last year into early 2025 during which Batista mailed out more than 1,500 packages containing pills and controlled substances. According to court filings, the activity took place between mid-December 2024 and late January 2025 with investigators determining that approximately 1,589 parcels were shipped during that period.

The investigation intensified in January 2025 when Drug Enforcement Administration agents executed search warrants on multiple locations tied to Batista, including a vehicle, a storage unit on Fashion Outlets Boulevard in Niagara Falls and a hotel room. Those searches led to the arrests of Batista and an alleged co-conspirator, Victor Miguel Brito Luna.

Authorities reported seizing a wide range of drugs including prescription pills such as Oxycodone, Adderall, Hydrocodone, Percocet, Tramadol, Diazepam, Alprazolam, Carisoprodol and Tapentadol. Investigators also recovered large quantities of illegal substances including tens of thousands of grams of methamphetamine, ketamine, and fentanyl. In addition, agents found 12 pounds of Ivermectin, a medication that requires a prescription but is not classified as a controlled substance.

Officials said the operation involved sourcing drugs internationally with Batista allegedly receiving bulk shipments from a supplier in India. Those shipments were then broken down and repackaged for distribution within the United States. Prosecutors said a co-conspirator assisted by helping package the drugs and transporting Batista as he carried out the mailings.

Payments for the narcotics were made electronically through Cash App, according to the plea agreement.

The case remains ongoing for Batista’s alleged associate who still faces pending charges.

Batista is scheduled to be sentenced at a later date.
