  • Body Remains Discovered in Rocky Mountain National Park Identified as Upstate New York Man

Authorities have confirmed that human remains found in June within Rocky Mountain National Park belong to a man from Upstate/Western New York. According to the Larimer County Coroner’s Office, the individual has been identified as 40-year-old Steven Noto. Officials stated that “he was positively and scientifically identified through dental record comparison,” following extensive investigative efforts. The remains were discovered late on June 18th along the Alpine Ridge Trail near Trail Ridge Road. Park spokesperson Kyle Patterson noted the discovery was made by a 12-year-old boy from Illinois who was visiting the area with his family. They had planned to hike to the Alpine Visitor Center when the remains were found. Due to the advanced state of decomposition - “mostly skeletonized” - at the time of discovery, the coroner’s office reported that a cause and manner of death could not be determined. However, based on the condition of the remains and the subsequent investigation, authorities believe Noto likely died in late November 2024. The coroner confirmed that foul play has been ruled out. The National Park Service is continuing to lead the investigation into the circumstances surrounding Noto’s death. No further information is available at this time. • Statewide Hunt Underway for Stolen Horse with Medical Needs from Upstate New York

New York State Police are searching for a missing horse named Koda, taken from a farm in the Union-Endicott area in Broome County sometime between July 23rd and 24th. Authorities say the stolen horse has unique dietary needs that could threaten his health if not located soon. “’Koda’ is a neutered male, called a gelding,” police stated in a press release issued Wednesday. “He is a flea-bitten grey color, which means he is grey with flecks of red and has a darker muzzle. ‘Koda’s owners are also concerned about him because he has special dietary restrictions.’” Koda was reportedly taken from a secured enclosure on Struble Road in the town of Union. He has two distinct brands that may help in identifying him: one is a Roman letter L resembling an upside-down Y on his front left shoulder and the other is an arrow pointing upward with a line underneath located on his rear left flank. Anyone who may have information about Koda’s whereabouts is urged to contact New York State Police at (607) 561-7400 and reference case number NY2500671337. • Hochul Issues Air Quality Alert for Upstate New York Amid Canadian Wildfire Smoke

Western New York is experiencing deteriorating air conditions as smoke from Canadian wildfires drifts into the region, prompting a public health advisory from Governor Kathy Hochul on Thursday morning. “This morning, visible smoke from Canadian wildfires is drifting into New York, causing a spike in fine particles and leading to unhealthy air quality in parts of Western New York,” Hochul said in a statement. Individuals who fall within sensitive groups - such as children, older adults, pregnant individuals, and those with heart or respiratory illnesses - are particularly at risk from the increased levels of fine particulate matter in the air. “I urge New Yorkers in the affected areas to take precautions. Limit time outdoors, stay inside when possible and avoid strenuous activities," Hochul advised. As of 10am, the Air Quality Index (AQI) for Western New York stood at 100, which marks the threshold for air quality deemed unhealthy for sensitive populations. Residents are encouraged to monitor conditions using the state’s AQI website at https://extapps.dec.ny.gov/cfmx/extapps/aqi/aqi\_forecast.cfm Hochul Issues Air Quality Alert for Upstate New York Amid Canadian Wildfire Smoke

  • Underwater Survey Firm Joins Effort to Recover Body of Missing Boater Near Niagara Falls

UPDATE The ongoing search for a missing boater - Jerome Williams, 66, of Buffalo - in the upper Niagara River received additional support Wednesday from an underwater survey company. Meanwhile, New York State Police and State Park Police continue their investigation into the July 23rd boat crash. ASI Marine, a company with locations in Orchard Park and Canada, assisted New York State Park Police in scanning the waters near the New York Power Authority's (NYPA) water intakes in hopes of finding Williams, who remains missing following the crash. According to the company’s website, ASI uses advanced robotic vehicles that are equipped with the latest in sonar and video imaging, survey, and inspection technologies. Their sonar systems are capable of producing detailed 3D models of submerged infrastructure. During Wednesday’s effort, ASI crews deployed a remote operated vehicle (ROV) along with sonar and camera equipment. Despite their efforts, Williams was not located. This search came just days after the recovery of Natalie Sansivero’s body on Friday evening. Sansivero, a Grand Island resident, was found approximately one mile from the crash site. Williams, of Buffalo, and Sansivero were aboard a 35-foot, 2015 Scout Boat when it crashed into the Niagara Falls Water Board's primary intake. The impact of the collision tore off part of the vessel leaving wreckage visible on the intake structure. The Park Police Marine Bureau continues to lead the investigation and is working on reconstructing the circumstances of the crash. Witnesses reported that the boat was heading west on the upper Niagara River, north of Navy Island, around 9:40pm on July 23rd when the fatal collision occurred. Concern grows that Williams' body has moved down the Upper Niagara River, as a result of strong current, towards Niagara Falls and possibly into the Lower Niagara River. BODY OF WOMAN RECOVERED New York State Park Police have recovered the body of one of the two individuals who went missing after a high-speed boating accident on the upper Niagara River Wednesday night. The victim, identified as 46-year-old Natalie Sansivero of Grand Island, was found around 7:30pm Friday, approximately one mile downstream from the crash site. Efforts to locate the second missing individual, 66-year-old Jerome Williams of Buffalo, are ongoing. On Saturday and Sunday, search operations continued with assistance from the Erie County Sheriff’s Marine Unit and aerial support from a New York State Police helicopter, covering both the upper and lower sections of the river. According to official reports, the vessel was traveling at speeds exceeding 50MPH when it struck a concrete abutment in the water. Witnesses reported that the impact appeared to launch both occupants into the river as the boat overturned. The response to the accident involved multiple agencies including the U.S. Coast Guard, New York State Park Police, the Niagara and Erie County Sheriff’s Offices, police from the City and Town of Tonawanda, and fire departments from Grand Island and River Road. Aerial searches were supported by helicopters from both county sheriff's offices. The damaged boat was retrieved from the river and is now in the custody of the Park Police Marine Bureau for investigation and accident reconstruction. NAMES OF DECEASED BOATERS The two individuals still missing have been identified as 66-year-old Jerome Williams of Buffalo and 46-year-old Natalie Sansivero of Grand Island. The damaged vessel has since been removed from the Niagara River and will undergo examination by investigators from the New York State Park Police Marine Bureau. The New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigations has taken over the missing persons case. A coordinated, multi-agency recovery operation, jointly led by State Police and Park Police, is ongoing. The search for two missing individuals following a boating crash on the upper Niagara River has shifted to a recovery operation, according to New York State Park Police. The New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigations has taken over the missing persons case. Park Police say an extensive search of the crash site and nearby navigable waters, including surrounding shoreline areas, has already been conducted. Despite these efforts, there has been no sign of the two individuals since their boat collided with a concrete piling near the North Grand Island Bridge late Wednesday night. The State Park Police Marine Bureau is continuing its boating accident investigation. Certified investigators from the division will complete the reconstruction of the incident as part of the formal inquiry. The ongoing recovery mission is now being handled through a coordinated, multi-agency effort led jointly by New York State Park Police and State Police under a unified command structure. ORIGINAL STORY A search and rescue effort is continuing on the upper Niagara River after a boat struck a concrete abutment and capsized near the North Grand Island Bridge on Wednesday night. Officials fear the current may have carried the two missing boaters, a man and woman in their 60s, closer to Niagara Falls due to the strong current. According to New York State Park Police, the incident occurred around 9:40pm when the vessel reportedly collided with a cement piling that supports power transmission line towers near the New York State Power Authority water intakes. Authorities believe the boat was traveling at speeds exceeding 50 miles per hour when the crash occurred. Search efforts continued into the early morning hours with the assistance of at least eight law enforcement boats and the Erie County Sheriff’s Air 1 helicopter. The search was suspended around 3am and is underway again, with Park Police planning to release preliminary findings later in the day. Because of the powerful undercurrents of the upper Niagara River, officials say it is unclear how far downstream the missing individuals may have drifted. With the crash occurring just a few miles upriver from Niagara Falls, search teams are now extending operations toward the falls themselves. Rescuers will begin expanding their search area Thursday to include the Niagara River rapids leading to the falls, the waters surrounding Goat Island, and areas adjacent to Niagara Falls State Park. These portions of the river are known for their treacherous conditions and where water flow accelerate dramatically as they approach the falls. Currents reach speeds of up to 30 miles per hour with over 700,000 gallons of water cascading over the brink every second. The incident remains under investigation. • Convicted Killer Now Faces Additional Charges in Ex-Girlfriend’s Death

A man previously convicted of murder and accused of fatally shooting his ex-girlfriend earlier this month is now facing a series of new charges according to online court records. Rickey M. Crouch, 49, was named in a superseding indictment unsealed Wednesday morning in Erie County Court. Crouch had already been indicted on charges of second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon, both felonies, in connection with the July 17th shooting death of 44-year-old Amanda Thompson, his former romantic partner. Now, he faces seven more charges including first-degree murder based on a prior conviction. The additional charges include two counts of second-degree burglary (felonies), two counts of misdemeanor child endangerment, another count of criminal possession of a weapon, and aggravated criminal contempt for allegedly violating an order of protection Thompson had previously obtained against him. Authorities allege that Crouch shot Thompson while she was on the porch of her South Ogden Street home shortly after midnight on July 17th, then fled the scene. Police issued a murder warrant later that day. Crouch was located in a vehicle on the New York State Thruway by New York State Police. Crouch attempted to escape at high speed but crashed between exits 57 and 57A near Hamburg around 4:22pm. He was then taken into custody. Crouch had two prior arrests in May related to Thompson including accusations of violating an order of protection. Buffalo Police reported that Crouch was arrested on a burglary charge in May after entering Thompson’s South Ogden Street home with a handgun. A report from the May 19th incident alleges that he kicked in the front door and grabbed Thompson by the throat in front of two of her children. He fled the scene but was later arrested and charged with multiple felony and misdemeanor counts. Police also reported recovering a 9mm handgun from his possession. On May 20th, a day after the incident, Thompson told officers that Crouch had violated an order of protection she had obtained that day by driving near her mother’s Schiller Street home while she was there. Despite the seriousness of the May 19th allegations and his arrest, Crouch was released from jail back into the community. Crouch, then 21, pleaded guilty in January 1997 alongside his cousin to the July 1996 killing of a 16-year-old McKinley High School student. The victim was described as an innocent bystander in a gang-related shooting. Crouch and his cousin were sentenced to prison terms ranging from 15 to 25 years to life. State prison records indicate Crouch was paroled in 2020 and discharged from parole in 2023. Convicted Killer Now Faces Additional Charges in Ex-Girlfriend’s Death

  • No Charges Filed in Accidental Shooting at Officer’s Home After Night of Drinking

This article was based on reporting by The Buffalo News. An off-duty Buffalo Police Officer will not face criminal charges after his firearm discharged during a night of drinking and wounded a woman at a fellow officer’s home, according to law enforcement. Authorities concluded the shooting, which took place at the Lancaster residence of then-Lancaster Police Officer John LaPiana, was accidental. The incident occurred in the early hours of June 11th when a 22-year-old woman was shot in the leg while seated near Dante LaMarti, a 26-year-old probationary officer with the Buffalo Police Department. Lancaster Police recently completed an 11-page investigation into the matter, attributing a significant role to alcohol in the events leading up to the shooting. The report, which was obtained by The Buffalo News through a Freedom of Information Law request, details the hours-long series of events involving LaMarti, LaPiana, and the woman, beginning in the evening hours of June 10th. According to LaPiana, he picked up LaMarti from his South Buffalo home around 8pm. The two then returned to LaPiana’s house in Lancaster where they drank alcohol before heading out to several bars. At LaPiana’s home, LaMarti was reportedly carrying a 9mm Springfield Hellcat, not his service weapon. The group’s first stop was the Transit Lounge on Transit Road where LaPiana told police he consumed six drinks. They later went to Cole’s on Elmwood Avenue in Buffalo where LaPiana said he had three more drinks. The final bar they visited was Crabapples on Genesee Street in Cheektowaga where they met the woman who was later injured. At Crabapples, the woman told police all three had “multiple mixed drinks” and “at least one shot of liquor.” She also claimed that when she offered to call a ride-hailing service, LaPiana dismissed the idea. According to the woman’s statement, LaPiana said “he’s a cop and can’t get in trouble.” LaPiana’s attorney has denied this claim. Around 3:15am, they returned to LaPiana’s house. At approximately 4:45am, LaPiana and LaMarti shared a shot of tequila on the couch. Moments later, LaMarti stood up, and a gunshot rang out. LaPiana said he heard “a loud bang” and realized a firearm had been discharged. The bullet pierced the woman’s phone and apparently initiated a call to one of her friends, who received a four-minute voicemail capturing the immediate aftermath. LaPiana’s father, Paul, who was upstairs sleeping, rushed down after hearing the noise. He then drove the group to Mercy Hospital. The shooting happened around 5am and Lancaster police were informed about it by Buffalo Police at about 5:48am. At the hospital, LaMarti initially gave personal details to Lancaster police, but then said, “I don’t know what happened,” and refused to answer further questions. A Lancaster lieutenant was later informed by a Buffalo Police lieutenant that LaMarti was declining to speak with them. The woman was transferred to Erie County Medical Center for additional treatment and released the same day. Investigators recovered LaMarti’s handgun from LaPiana’s home. Although the investigation could not determine precisely what LaMarti was doing with the gun at the time it fired, authorities concluded there was no intent to harm. LaMarti has not cooperated with the investigation, and police, along with the Erie County District Attorney’s Office, were unsuccessful in arranging an interview with him. His actions are still under review by the Buffalo Police Department. John LaPiana, on the other hand, cooperated with investigators. His phone was searched but found to contain “nothing of evidentiary value.” His attorney, Frank LoTempio III, praised his client’s response following the shooting: “He really took command of the situation that he didn’t cause.” Police attempted to question LaPiana the following day, but he invoked his right to legal counsel. He later resigned from the Lancaster Police Department, which was accepted by the Lancaster Town Board on July 7th. Lancaster Police Captain Jeffrey Smith confirmed that internal disciplinary charges against LaPiana were being considered prior to his resignation. Smith also noted that Paul LaPiana initially told responding officers there had been no shots fired, though police do not believe he was deliberately misleading but rather not immediately forthcoming. As of late last week, the Buffalo Police Benevolent Association had not been informed of an internal investigation into LaMarti, according to union president John Davidson. This article was based on reporting by The Buffalo News. No Charges Filed in Accidental Shooting at Officer’s Home After Night of Drinking

  • Local Man Arrested at Ironman in Lake Placid for Leaving Son Alone While He Raced

A Kenmore man was taken into custody during the Ironman Lake Placid competition after authorities say he left his 9-year-old son unattended for nearly 10 hours while competing in the race. The man, Harley Tong, disputes the claim and says the situation has been misunderstood. “He wasn’t alone,” said Tong. “We had been, throughout the whole week, talking with all of the volunteers and Ironman staff.” Tong and his son traveled to Lake Placid a few weeks before the race. Originally planning to bring both his sons, Tong said his older son couldn’t make the trip, leaving him without childcare for his younger child. He explained that he spoke with two Ironman volunteers who then issued his son a VIP pass. “She (volunteer) looked at me and said you’re not allowed to not finish,” said Tong. “They knew about the legacy program and that it was my son’s first event and I truly believe that all of the best intentions were to give him a phenomenal experience.” However, the day of the event didn’t go as planned. Tong said unexpected weather conditions and equipment problems caused significant delays during the race. Lake Placid Police received two separate complaints about a child left unsupervised. Officers responded and located Tong’s son sitting under a table. According to the police report, an investigation found that the child had been left alone for approximately 10 hours while Tong participated in the triathlon. Police removed Tong from the race to question him. Despite explaining his version of events, he was arrested and charged with endangering the welfare of a child. “It’s a series of unfortunate events and a misunderstanding,” said Tong. “Hopefully we will be able to get it all corrected.” Tong acknowledged the efforts of all involved and expressed that he took something away from the experience. “There is definitely going to be a party of three anywhere I go now it seems,” he said. Tong was released the same day and is scheduled to appear in Lake Placid Village Court on August 7th. Local Man Arrested at Ironman in Lake Placid for Leaving Son Alone While He Raced

  • Autopsy Confirms Cause of Death for Missing Child Murdered by Father

Authorities have released the preliminary autopsy findings for 9-year-old Melina Frattolin who was discovered deceased on Sunday in Ticonderoga, New York, following an earlier report of abduction near Lake George. The New York State Police confirmed the results of the autopsy, which indicated that Melina's death was a homicide caused by asphyxia due to drowning. The case began when Melina’s father, 45-year-old Luciano Frattolin, contacted 911 reporting that his daughter had disappeared and may have been abducted near Exit 22 of I-87 in Lake George. He claimed she was last seen in a white van traveling south on the Northway. Investigators later uncovered inconsistencies in his statements and the provided timeline, prompting further investigation. By Sunday night, police located Melina’s body in a wooded area of Ticonderoga. Following the discovery, Frattolin was arrested and charged with second-degree murder and concealment of a human corpse. According to court filings, he allegedly hid his daughter’s body beneath a log in a shallow section of a pond. He has pleaded not guilty. As part of the ongoing investigation, New York State Police are seeking information about the movements of a 2024 gray Toyota Prius, which the father and daughter were believed to have traveled in between July 11th and July 19th. Authorities are requesting surveillance footage or eyewitness reports from the area along I-87 Northway, between Exits 28 (North Schroon Lake: US 9, NY 74 to Ticonderoga) and Exit 20 (Fort Ann, Queensbury, Lake George, NY 149 & US 9). • Search and Rescue Efforts Underway After Boating Accident on Upper Niagara River

A multi-agency search and rescue operation is ongoing in the Upper Niagara River after a boating accident left two individuals missing late Tuesday night. At approximately 9:45pm, emergency crews were dispatched to the area near the New York State Power Authority water intakes following reports of a capsized vessel. The boat reportedly struck a cement piling that supports transmission line towers before overturning. Agencies currently involved in the search include the New York State Park Police, Niagara County Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Coast Guard, Grand Island Fire Department, City of Tonawanda Marine Unit, and the Erie County Sheriff’s Air 1 helicopter. Crews remained on scene actively searching the water as the effort to locate the missing boaters continues. It is unknown how far down the upper Niagara River both individuals may be due to the strong undercurrent. Already only a few miles of Niagara Falls, the closer both individuals drift toward the falls themselves the faster current gets. With an astonishing flow of over 700,000 gallons of water per second hurtling over the falls, the river generates an immensely forceful and rapid current as the falls approaches. These waters, and then the rapids that follow, can reach speeds of up to 30 miles per hour. Search and Rescue Efforts Underway After Boating Accident on Upper Niagara River

  • Maxwell Hairston Maintains Innocence in Civil Lawsuit, Bills Stand by Rookie Cornerback

Buffalo Bills rookie CB Maxwell Hairston responded to a recent civil lawsuit and publicly declared his innocence during the team’s training camp at St. John Fisher University. Hairston, who was drafted in the first round with the 27th pick, addressed the matter for the first time following the Bills’ opening summer practice. “It’s been something I’ve been dealing with since I was 17. It’s been four years now,” Hairston said after signing autographs for fans. The lawsuit, filed July 1st in U.S. District Court in Kentucky, alleges that Hairston sexually assaulted a woman in her University of Kentucky dorm room in March 2021. Despite the allegations, Hairston said that both police and university investigations cleared him. “I went through this whole process with the police,” he stated. “They went through a thorough investigation, and I was exonerated from that. The University of Kentucky did a thorough investigation. I was exonerated from that as well. I volunteered to do multiple polygraphs because I was determined to get my truth out there, because I have nothing to hide. I was an open book. I have two sisters that I love dearly, and I respect all females.” Bills GM Brandon Beane reaffirmed the team's support for Hairston and maintained confidence in its pre-draft vetting process. “It is frustrating because in the legal world you can’t sit there and say things back and forth. You got to let it go,” Beane said during a press conference at training camp. “But this happened to this young man over four years ago. He gave up his phone to prove some of … he took a polygraph test. This kid didn’t run from anything. He answered every single thing.” Beane continued, “We have to remember in society that people can make accusations and do things. And I have no idea what the agenda is there. But I can tell you every stone we turned over, every door we looked behind, this is a very good young man. A young man you would let in your house, you would let watch your kids, hang out with whoever. Like he is genuinely a good person. He’s got sisters, he’s got a mother, he’s got a great family, raised the right way.” Beane also referenced a prior case involving former Bills punter Matt Araiza, using it to caution against rushing to judgment based on accusations alone. “I would feel terrible if someone said that about one of my sons,” Beane said. “And I think we need to remember in the world, and I’m not going to get into it but we see these accusations, sometimes these guys can be victims too. They make a lot of money and I just want to make sure [because] . . . rarely do people defend them. And that’s hard for me in this seat sometimes because I’ve seen it. We’ve had it here with a player here a few years ago that’s no longer here that was wrongly accused.” Maxwell Hairston Maintains Innocence in Civil Lawsuit, Bills Stand by Rookie Cornerback

  • West Nile Virus Confirmed in New York: First Human Cases Reported in 2025

New York State health officials have confirmed the first human cases of West Nile virus for 2025. According to the New York State Department of Health, two cases have been reported so far this year: one in Erie County and another in Onondaga County. These are the first confirmed human infections with West Nile virus in New York this year. In addition to the human cases, several pools of mosquitoes across the state have tested positive for the virus. Positive mosquito samples have been identified in Rockland County, Suffolk County, and multiple boroughs of New York City. West Nile Virus, which is primarily spread to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito, can lead to serious health consequences. While many individuals infected with the virus do not experience symptoms, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that about 1 in 5 people will develop symptoms such as fever, headache, body aches, joint pain, vomiting, diarrhea, or rash. Fatigue and weakness can last for weeks or even months after the initial illness. In more severe cases, approximately 1 in 150 infected people develop serious neurological illnesses such as encephalitis or meningitis. These serious infections can result in high fever, neck stiffness, disorientation, coma, tremors, seizures, or paralysis. Older adults and individuals with certain medical conditions are at greater risk for developing severe disease. The CDC reports that around 100 to 200 deaths are caused by West Nile virus annually in the United States. There is currently no vaccine or specific antiviral treatment available for West Nile virus. Medical care is limited to managing symptoms, which may include hospitalization for more serious cases to provide supportive care such as intravenous fluids and pain management. • Western New York Beaches Rank Among State’s Dirtiest for Fecal Bacteria

Two beaches in Western New York have been identified as among the most contaminated in the state due to elevated levels of fecal bacteria, according to a report released by the nonprofit Environment New York. Woodlawn Beach State Park in Blasdell and Hamburg Bathing Beach were found to have high counts of E. coli - a bacteria commonly linked to fecal matter - during water quality tests conducted last year. The report draws on data from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s BEACON system which tracks beach advisories and closures. Woodlawn Beach recorded unhealthy E. coli levels on 37 out of 113 days tested, making it the worst in New York for fecal contamination. Hamburg Bathing Beach ranked third, with unsafe readings on 30 of 95 days tested. The EPA’s Beach Action Value sets the threshold for unsafe swimming conditions at 235 colony forming units (CFU) of E. coli per 100 milliliters of water. Exceeding this level can lead to health issues including rashes, ear infections, gastrointestinal problems, and in some cases, hospitalization, particularly among vulnerable populations such as children and the elderly. Nearly every beach monitored in Erie, Niagara, and Chautauqua counties recorded at least one day with E. coli levels above this threshold. Since Memorial Day weekend this year, Woodlawn Beach has tested above the EPA limit on 15 out of 60 days, including seven times in July. Hamburg Beach recorded high levels on five of 33 testing days, with three instances occurring in July. The trend of bacterial contamination at Western New York beaches has plagued the area for years. The ongoing issue is linked to aging wastewater systems, runoff, and increasingly warm water temperatures influenced by climate change, according to local water quality experts. Efforts to improve conditions at Woodlawn Beach have included the expansion of wetlands in 2023 by New York State Parks, intended to filter contaminants from Blasdell Creek before reaching the beach. Additionally, Erie County invested $16 million in 2015 and 2016 to upgrade sanitary sewer systems tied to the Southtowns water treatment facility which aimed at reducing sewage overflow into local waterways. • Beloved Rescued Seal Della Dies at Aquarium of Niagara

The Aquarium of Niagara is mourning the loss of Della, a 35-year-old rescued grey seal who passed away following a decline in health. Veterinarians recently diagnosed Della with a severe shoulder condition that caused significant pain and reduced mobility. Although efforts were made to improve her comfort, her condition continued to deteriorate. After carefully considering her quality of life, the veterinary and zoological teams decided that humane euthanasia was the most compassionate option. Pathologists are currently working to determine the exact cause of her illness. Della was a familiar and cherished presence at the Aquarium’s outdoor Rescue Harbor exhibit where she lived for the past ten years. Originally rescued in 1990 for repeated interactions with humans off the coast of Delaware, she was first placed at Zoo Knoxville before spending time at Lincoln Park Zoo and Brookfield Zoo in Chicago. She arrived at the Aquarium of Niagara in 2015. While in human care, Della developed bilateral cataracts and eventually lost her sight completely. Despite becoming blind, she actively participated in her own care using verbal and tactile cues. She also formed special bonds with guests through the Aquarium’s seal encounter program. With a wild grey seal’s median life expectancy ranging from 25 to 35 years, her long life reflected the exceptional care provided to her by each zoological institutions. To honor her memory, the Aquarium is inviting the public to share their personal photos and stories of Della on their social media platforms. Beloved Rescued Seal Della Dies at Aquarium of Niagara

  • Off-duty Cop Under Review After Displaying Gun During Golf Course Dispute

A confrontation at Glen Oak Golf Course in Amherst on June 5th took an unusual turn when an off-duty Cheektowaga police officer reportedly displayed a handgun during a dispute with fellow golfers. The incident, which followed an argument stemming from an errant tee shot, is now under internal investigation by the Cheektowaga Police Department. According to authorities from both Amherst and Cheektowaga, the officer involved revealed his holstered firearm after an argument broke out with a group ahead of him on the course. “Right now, there is an ongoing departmental investigation to determine exactly what happened and whether the officer conducted himself properly,” said Capt. Jeffrey Schmidt, a Cheektowaga Police spokesperson. “At this point, it does not appear that he pointed his gun at anyone.” Amherst Police officers responded to the course after receiving a report of a verbal dispute in which one man allegedly displayed a firearm and claimed to be a police officer. The responding officers instructed the individual to put his hands on his head and conducted a weapons check. He disclosed that he was armed and carrying the weapon in a holster. Officers later confirmed that the individual was a 25-year-old off-duty Cheektowaga officer. The officer said that his ball landed close to a group playing ahead on the seventh green, prompting two of those golfers to become enraged and confront him. He said that one of the men began waving a golf club and threatened him. In response, the officer removed his gun from his golf bag, identified himself as law enforcement, and said he did not point the weapon at anyone. According to the officer, one of the individuals from the forward group shouted, “He’s got a gun!” at which point the group stepped back. Statements taken from the four men in the forward group indicated that one of them was nearly hit by the officer’s tee shot. One golfer mentioned that the officer displayed his badge during the dispute. No physical altercations or injuries occurred. Another man claimed the officer said, “You’re going to have trouble with the police,” during the incident. No charges have been filed in the matter, although a Cheektowaga Police sergeant arrived at the scene to collect the officer’s firearm. Schmidt noted that while the officer may not have committed any departmental violations related to threatening others with the firearm, questions remain about whether the situation was handled appropriately. “Probably the biggest issue is, ‘Did he handle this the right way? Should he have just walked away from the situation?’ Our investigation is continuing,” he said. When asked whether it is standard for off-duty officers to carry firearms while golfing, Schmidt responded, “Officers are authorized to carry their guns any time they are off-duty.” Off-duty Cop Under Review After Displaying Gun During Golf Course Dispute

  • Niagara Falls Woman Shares Near Attack on Bike Path

A Niagara Falls woman is urging others to stay alert after a disturbing incident on a local bike path this past weekend went viral on social media. Bianca Falsetti, who frequently rides solo along the scenic path overlooking the Niagara Gorge, said she had an unsettling encounter on Saturday afternoon around 4pm. According to her, a man approached and grabbed her bike's handlebars, stopping her from moving forward. "I literally just froze and did nothing and was in disbelief,” she said during an interview to WIVB News 4. She wasn’t sure what the man's intentions were, but said his words didn’t make sense and his behavior made her feel unsafe. With the man holding the handlebars, she felt unable to escape. Fortunately, a couple riding bikes nearby noticed the situation and stepped in to help. Falsetti said the woman’s forceful command startled the man enough for him to release the bike. "The wife was just like, ‘get off of her right now, are you crazy?’ And I think she spooked him a little and he backed off and let go of my handle bars,” Falsetti said. Following the incident, she shared her experience on social media to alert others in the area, especially women, about the potential dangers of being alone outdoors. “Women and everyone in general just need to be safe,” she said. “I’ve had a lot of women reach out and say something similar has happened to them, either on this path or on a different area near us.” To help others stay safe, Falsetti recommended practical safety measures such as riding with a buddy, carrying a noise-making device like an air horn, and sharing real-time locations with trusted contacts. “I know so many people are like, oh go somewhere that’s safer, go somewhere like this place or that place, but this was a friendly reminder that things can happen anywhere,” Falsetti said. “It doesn’t matter how nice the neighborhood is or where you are. My message was about situational awareness, if you can ride with a friend, and always be vigilant.” Niagara Falls Woman Shares Near Attack on Bike Path Encounter to Warn Others

  • New Yorkers to Receive STAR Tax Relief Checks as Phase Two Begins

Governor Kathy Hochul has announced the beginning of phase two of the School Tax Relief (STAR) program’s benefit season. The program will provide additional tax relief to eligible homeowners across New York State. Phase two targets homeowners in areas where school tax bills are due in August or September. These homeowners can expect to receive their STAR benefits in the coming weeks. Most qualifying homeowners will receive checks ranging from $350 to $600 while eligible seniors will receive checks between $700 and $1,500. "The STAR program provides needed school tax relief to millions of New York homeowners — and the program is now in full swing,” said Governor Hochul. “During a time of financial uncertainty due to funding cuts by Republicans in Washington, my administration is putting money back in the pockets of families with check and credit deliveries continuing to go out to hundreds of thousands of homeowners statewide." The STAR program’s first phase focused on regions with school tax due dates in June and July, which included on major cities such as New York City, Yonkers, Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse. Altogether, nearly three million homeowners across the state are set to receive more than $2.2 billion in property tax relief during the STAR benefit season. "Thanks to Governor Hochul, a substantial number of New York residents, including 320,000 in Western New York, will have more money in their pockets over the next few months because of the STAR tax relief program," said Senator April Baskin. "In these uncertain economic times, this program is particularly helpful to working families and older residents who benefit from such meaningful financial relief." Eligible homeowners can receive their STAR benefit as either a direct reduction in their school tax bill or as a credit issued via check or direct deposit. Recipients can visit https://ny.gov/STAR to check the status of their benefit. New Yorkers to Receive STAR Tax Relief Checks as Phase Two Begins

  • Canadian Father Accused of Killing Daughter in Upstate New York, Falsely Claimed Kidnapping

A Montreal man is facing charges after New York authorities say he murdered his 9-year-old daughter while on vacation in the U.S. and misled police by reporting a false abduction. Luciano Frattolin, who had taken his daughter Melina Galanis Frattolin on a trip through New York City and Connecticut, was charged with second-degree murder and concealment of a corpse after her body was found Sunday in a shallow pond near Ticonderoga, according to New York State Police. Authorities say the father and daughter crossed into the U.S. on July 11th for what was meant to be a 10-day trip. Melina’s mother, who lives in Montreal and has had sole custody since 2019, had no concerns about the vacation, police said. On Saturday evening, Melina reportedly spoke with her mother saying they were on their way home. Hours later, she was dead. According to police, Frattolin contacted 911 late Saturday in Warren County claiming Melina had been abducted near Exit 22 on Interstate 87, close to Lake George. He told dispatchers he had pulled over to relieve himself in the woods and, upon returning, saw two men force his daughter into a white van before fleeing the scene. The report prompted an AMBER Alert early Sunday and launched a large-scale multi-agency search effort involving aviation teams, K-9 units, local law enforcement, and state park personnel. However, investigators soon became suspicious of Frattolin’s version of events. Discrepancies in the timeline and inconsistencies in his statements led them to question his account. By Sunday afternoon, New York State Police Forest Rangers discovered Melina’s body submerged in a shallow section of a remote pond near Ticonderoga. At a Monday press conference, State Police Capt. Robert McConnell said investigators believe Melina was killed on Saturday night, shortly after the call with her mother. There is no prior record of criminal activity or domestic abuse involving Frattolin and police continue to search for a clear motive. An autopsy will determine the cause and manner of Melina’s death. Frattolin was arrested in Essex County and taken to jail early Monday. Authorities believe he killed his daughter, left her body in the isolated location, and fabricated the kidnapping story to cover his tracks. “This is certainly a difficult case and a heartbreaking investigation,” McConnell said. “The best we can do is provide some measure of justice to the family.” Canadian Father Accused of Killing Daughter in Upstate New York, Falsely Claimed Kidnapping
