- Buffalo Family Grieves Woman Killed in Skyway Crash
A collision on Buffalo’s Skyway has left a local family in mourning after 28-year-old Shabrina Grant lost her life in a crash caused by a wrong-way driver. The accident occurred in the evening hours of June 5th. Authorities reported the crash happened around 11:30pm on the inbound side of the Skyway. Investigators believe a vehicle, traveling at a high speed in the wrong direction, slammed head-on into another car. Grant, riding as a passenger in the vehicle that caused the crash, was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other individuals were seriously injured. The driver of the vehicle Grant was in, a 27-year-old man from Lackawanna, remains hospitalized, as does a 46-year-old woman who was behind the wheel of the vehicle that was struck. Police have not yet released any updates regarding potential charges or the full circumstances surrounding the collision. Shabrina Grant was known among friends and family for her warm personality, fashion sense, and dedication to her work. She was employed as a certified nursing assistant at Elderwood in Williamsville where she helped care for elderly patients with compassion and professionalism. In addition to her career, Grant was a devoted mother to her 5-year-old son, Jae’vion, who has autism. With her sudden passing, her siblings are preparing to take on the responsibility of raising him, hoping to provide the same love and care Grant always gave. Her death adds to a string of hardships faced by her family over the years. In 2008, one of her younger sisters was the victim of a homicide and in 2021, the family lost their matriarch to COVID-19. The cumulative grief has been profound. Plans are underway to lay Grant to rest in Tennessee where she will be buried beside her mother. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family, friends and loved ones. Buffalo Family Grieves Woman Killed in Skyway Crash
- Deadly Bacteria Found in Ground Beef Sold at High-end New York Grocery Chain
Photo Credit Brittani Burns Health officials have issued a public health alert after a potentially deadly strain of E. coli was discovered in organic ground beef sold at one of New York’s priciest grocery retailers. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is warning consumers about specific packages of organic ground beef that may be contaminated with E. coli, a dangerous bacterium known to cause severe foodborne illness. “E. coli is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause dehydration, bloody diarrhea, and abdominal cramps two to eight days (three to four days, on average) after exposure,” the FSIS alert states. “While most people recover within a week, some develop a serious complication known as hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), which can lead to kidney failure.” The alert applies to the following product: 1-lb. vacuum-sealed packages of "ORGANIC RANCHER ORGANIC GROUND BEEF 85% LEAN 15% FAT" labeled with “Use or Freeze By 06-19-25” and “Use or Freeze By 06-20-25.” The beef was produced on May 22nd and May 23rd, 2025, and carries the establishment number “EST. 4027” inside the USDA inspection mark. According to FSIS, the affected ground beef was distributed nationally through Whole Foods Market, which has locations throughout New York and is widely recognized as one of the most expensive grocery store chains in the state. Health officials are urging consumers to check their freezers and refrigerators for the listed packages and to dispose of them or return them to the place of purchase. Consumers with questions or concerns can contact the USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 1-888-MPHotline (1-888-674-6854). Deadly Bacteria Found in Ground Beef Sold at High-end New York Grocery Chain
- Restaino Wins: Appeals Court Denies NFR’s Attempt to Reopen Centennial Park Eminent Domain Case
A New York State appellate court has rejected another attempt by Niagara Falls Redevelopment (NFR) and its affiliated company, Blue Apple Properties Inc., to reopen a high-profile eminent domain case related to the city’s proposed Centennial Park development. In a ruling released Friday, the Appellate Division of the Fourth Department denied a motion filed in March by NFR that sought to overturn a previous unanimous decision made on July 28th, 2023. That ruling supported the City of Niagara Falls’ right to seize up to 12 acres of land through eminent domain for the creation of a public park and events venue. NFR’s motion was based on newly surfaced information suggesting the company may have never legally gained title to approximately five acres of the land in question, including what was once the 10th Street Park. NFR argued that this evidence could have changed the outcome of the original decision. “Because this new evidence is manifestly inconsistent with the facts on which [the July 2023 ruling] is based, [NFR] respectfully asks this Court to vacate [the ruling],” wrote NFR’s attorney John Horn in court documents. Horn also urged the court to reject the Niagara Falls City Council’s finding that the Centennial Park project would serve a public benefit, questioning whether it met the legal standard of serving a legitimate public purpose. But the appellate court responded with a brief, three-sentence decision: “Now upon reading and filing the papers with respect to the motion, and due deliberation having been had thereon, it is hereby ordered that the motion is denied.” Mayor Robert Restaino, who initially declined to comment on the court’s decision, later issued a statement in support of the ruling. "The ruling by the New York State Appellate Division clearly demonstrates that Niagara Falls Redevelopment is running out of legal options in its latest attempt to persuade the courts to reject the city's eminent domain action in our efforts to build Centennial Park," Restaino said. “As the city has argued and the courts have continued to resolutely uphold, NFR never properly gained title to what was previously the 10th Street Park where Centennial Park will be constructed,” he added. The mayor emphasized that NFR currently owns roughly 140 acres of property in downtown Niagara Falls. “The fact that they are pulling out all the stops fighting the city over a few acres for which we are offering fair market value is revealing,” he said. Restaino also criticized NFR for long claiming that a lack of city development was to blame for its own inactivity, even as the city now pushes forward with a $200 million public project that could attract tens of thousands of visitors annually. “Now, here we are with a proposed $200 million venue and events center that will bring tens of thousands of people annually to downtown Niagara Falls on property legally owned by the city, and NFR is doing all it can to stop this city-driven development,” he said. “This is not about a multi-billion-dollar data center as proposed by NFR that without the disputed acreage of 10th Street Park will not happen. It’s about a continued illogical pattern of preventing Niagara Falls from fulfilling its potential as a true world-class tourism destination.” The City Council previously authorized its legal team to take steps to nullify the 2004 transfer of the 10th Street Playground property. The city’s special counsel, Hodgson Russ LLP, initiated a quiet title action to formally reclaim the land — a legal process to establish uncontested ownership. While NFR maintains that the property was “lawfully” transferred, the courts have so far backed the city’s efforts. In their 2023 ruling, the appellate judges affirmed that “the city’s determination to exercise its eminent domain power is rationally related to a conceivable public purpose.” Restaino Wins: Appeals Court Denies NFR’s Attempt to Reopen Centennial Park Eminent Domain Case

- Old Fort Niagara Plans Native American Education Center to Mark Revolutionary War Anniversary
As part of a commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution, Old Fort Niagara has unveiled an initiative to construct an 18th-century-style Native American dwelling that will serve as a new education center dedicated to Native history and culture. The structure, modeled after historical housing built for Native allies of the British during the Revolutionary War, will become a central feature of the Fort’s expanded Native living history program. The building aims to highlight the vital contributions and experiences of Indigenous nations who sought refuge near Fort Niagara during the conflict. “This project underscores our commitment to honoring all facets of the Fort’s history, especially the stories of Native peoples who were deeply connected to this region long before and throughout the era of European colonization,” said Robert Emerson, Executive Director of Old Fort Niagara. The planned log structure will feature traditional elements that reflect historical Native lifestyles with areas set up to show how people cooked, slept, stored goods, and dressed in the late 1700s. Authentic items such as clothing, trade goods, tools, and weapons will be on display. Visitors will engage directly with Native interpreters who will provide education on culture, diplomacy, and survival during the turbulent wartime years. Construction of the education center is already partially funded with $200,000 secured and a public campaign is now underway to raise an additional $50,000. Beyond being a historical exhibit, the education center will host workshops on traditional Indigenous crafts and practices. Planned sessions include moccasin making, beadwork, quillwork, finger weaving, and instruction in Native languages. Local Native communities will also be invited to use the space for cultural events and gatherings. Jordan Smith, Mohawk Bear Clan and head of Native education at the Fort, emphasized the educational value of the facility, especially for younger generations. "This space will give students and visitors alike a chance to experience the cultural richness and historical reality of Native life during the Revolution." The building will be constructed near the Fort’s Visitor Center with plans for it to open to the public in the spring. It will operate during regular museum hours and also host evening programs under traditional lighting for special events. Photo credit JP Valery A popular hiking trail in the Adirondacks has been temporarily closed after state officials reported the presence of a potentially dangerous bull moose in the area. According to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), the Goodman Mountain Trail in the Horseshoe Lake Wild Forest has been shut down as a precaution to protect both visitors and the animal. Wildlife experts caution that moose, especially males, can behave unpredictably if startled or approached, creating a safety risk for hikers. Warning signs have been posted at trail entrances and access points and officials are urging outdoor sightseers to explore alternative trails in the region while the closure is in effect. The DEC says the trail will remain closed until they determine it is safe to reopen to the public. Upstate New York Mountain Trail Temporarily Closed Due to Dangerous Bull Moose

- LAURRIE: Niagara Falls City School District Celebrates 2024-2025 Successes and Milestones
By: Mark Laurrie Superintendent We are closing the 2024-2025 school year, filled with many successes and significant growth. The offerings we provide our students throughout the school year range from our youngest infants in Early Head Start to the Niagara Falls High School (NFHS) Class of 2025, who will receive their diplomas at the end of the month. The accomplishments and honors the Niagara Falls City School District (NFCSD) collects continue to grow each year. Let’s take a look back at some recent student and district accomplishments. On May 29, 2025, the district held an event to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the building of the “new” Niagara Falls High School. The absolute highlight of the evening was the documentary “Blue and Gold, 25 Years of Niagara Falls High School,” which our media production students wrote, produced, and edited. This outstanding documentary aligns seamlessly with anything you would see on PBS and other quality channels. Please take a look at this fantastic work by students; NFHS students are among the most talented in the Western New York area and beyond. The link to the documentary is on the homepage of the district’s website. Here are some recent highlights of our 2024 – 2025 school year: Congratulations to the NFHS Chess Team for a perfect season, with 15 wins and zero losses, and for taking first place in its division and in the Western New York Interscholastic Chess Tournament. The NFHS Chess Team is currently ranked first place in all of Western New York, playing against some very talented teams. Congratulations to our NFHS Bands, which swept all the awards as they traveled to Boston to compete in the Music in the Parks Festival. NFHS swept their division in every category (Jazz Ensemble, Concert Band, Parade and Percussion Ensemble), bringing home first place across the board, two best overalls (Jazz Ensemble, Parade), Best Jazz Soloist (Miles Zacher), and the Esprit de Corps, the highest honor presented at the competition that is given to the group that displays pride, fellowship, and citizenship across all aspects of the festival. This fantastic group of student musicians was awarded for their character. Outstanding. The NFHS Boys Varsity Baseball team made history this spring by capturing the Section 6 AAA title and qualifying for the Far West Regional playoffs. 40 outdoor track athletes qualified to compete in the State Championships. That is a significant number of students with considerable talent. Congratulations to Coach Speidel and his staff. Also, in sports, Athletic Director Joe Contento is proud to announce that every single spring sports team qualified as a scholar-athlete team. That means every spring athlete kept up a grade point average of 90% or better. The district is honored to announce that 23 students earned the Seal of Biliteracy this year. On Thursday, June 5, 2025 50 LaSalle Prep School students signed on to participate in PTECH, the computer and engineering program. An adult support person accompanied every student A quick note to wrap up: The district is aware that students, staff, and parents have many questions and concerns about the smart device (cellphone) ban, and we will keep you fully informed and updated. We received 920 responses to our survey on banning smart devices. The ban takes effect on September 1, 2025. The responses were representative of all stakeholder groups. We are compiling a PowerPoint presentation to share the results soon. Due to the timing of this process, I plan to hold one or two virtual town hall meetings to answer as many questions as possible, provide more information, and obtain feedback. The first event will take place on Tuesday, June 24, at 6:30 p.m. Links and information will be published soon. Be proud of this school year, and enjoy your vacation! Please stay safe so we can all return in September refreshed, relaxed, and ready for another stellar year. LAURRIE: Niagara Falls City School District Celebrates 2024-2025 Successes and Milestones

- Dominican Man Accused of Killing Upstate New York Family Captured by U.S. Marshals
A man accused of murdering an entire family — including two toddlers — in an arson case in upstate New York has been apprehended in the Dominican Republic, U.S. Marshals announced Wednesday. Luis Francisco Soriano, 31, was taken into custody near a hotel call center in Punta Cana where he had reportedly been working. Soriano is accused of carrying out a quadruple homicide in Irondequoit, New York, on August 31st, 2024. The victims included 30-year-old Fraime Ubaldo, 26-year-old Marangely Moreno Santiago, and their two young children, 4-year-old Evangeline and 2-year-old Sebastian, who all died when their home was allegedly set on fire following the attack. "This case shook communities across both New York and Puerto Rico, and its impact was felt far beyond,” said U.S. Marshal Wilmer Ocasio-Ibarra in a statement. “The murder of two children and their parents in such a horrifying manner deeply challenged our sense of justice and human decency.” Authorities said Soriano initially fled to Puerto Rico before escaping to the Dominican Republic. His arrest comes months after his older brother, 34-year-old Julio Soriano, was detained just days after the killings. Investigators believe the slayings were targeted and linked to a family dispute involving a cousin. The victims’ home was reduced to ashes. Officials later determining the fire was deliberately set in an effort to destroy evidence of the quadruple murder. Autopsies confirmed the family had been killed before the fire. Luis Soriano now faces four counts of second-degree murder along with federal narcotics charges. Dominican authorities are holding him as U.S. officials begin the extradition process. - VIDEO: Body Camera Shows Upstate New York Man Point Gun at Troopers Before Fatal Shooting
Newly released body camera footage reveals an encounter outside a New York State Police barracks in Saratoga County where a 69-year-old man was fatally shot by troopers after allegedly pointing a gun at them. According to the New York State Attorney General’s Office, which made the footage public on Thursday, the incident took place on April 9th in Malta, about 25 miles north of Albany. At approximately 1:43pm, David Levine of Malta reportedly approached the State Police facility and opened fire on the building with a long gun. State Police spokesperson Stephanie O’Neil said officers inside the barracks quickly realized shots were being fired. The footage shows two troopers exiting the building through a side door as one says, “He’s still out front — I don’t know how to approach this.” In the video, Levine can be seen in the parking lot near a red pickup truck, holding what appears to be a rifle. The troopers notify 911 dispatchers, giving a description of Levine’s appearance. “He’s laying down,” one trooper notes, before the other officer moves toward his vehicle to retrieve a patrol rifle and take cover. About two minutes into the footage, a trooper shouts commands at Levine, urging him to drop the weapon. Levine, now standing, responds, “No, shoot me.” Despite repeated orders to disarm and get on the ground, Levine refused and raised his weapon in the direction of the officers. One of the troopers then fired, striking Levine. Officers immediately moved in, placed him in handcuffs, and called for emergency medical assistance. Levine was transported to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead. The Office of the Attorney General, which is legally mandated to investigate deaths caused by law enforcement officers, responded to the scene and has launched an official investigation. The office has not yet issued a final determination on the case. Levine’s motive is unknown and an investigation is ongoing. - New York Considers Bill to Fund Transition Surgeries for Transgender Inmates
New York State lawmakers are reviewing a bill that could make it the first in the nation to guarantee state-funded gender-affirming surgeries for incarcerated transgender individuals. The proposal, aimed at protecting the rights and dignity of transgender, nonbinary, and gender-nonconforming prisoners, has garnered stark criticisms from republicans. The legislation, Senate Bill S1049 — known as the “Gender Identity Respect, Dignity and Safety Act” — is sponsored by State Senator Julia Salazar, a Democrat representing Brooklyn’s 18th District. If passed, the bill would require state correctional facilities to provide affirming medical and mental health care to inmates whose gender identity differs from the sex they were assigned at birth, including hormone therapy and gender-affirming surgeries. “This bill is about basic human rights,” said Sen. Salazar. “Every person, regardless of their incarceration status, deserves access to medical care that aligns with their identity and protects their safety.” As of January 2025, New York’s prison system houses 115 individuals who identify as nonbinary—meaning they do not exclusively identify as male or female. These identities are often grouped under the broader transgender umbrella, though not all nonbinary individuals consider themselves transgender. Under the proposed law, transgender and gender-nonconforming inmates would be entitled to gender-aligned clothing, hygiene products, educational materials, and participation in programs that respect their gender identity. The bill also seeks to prohibit facilities from placing these individuals in “protective custody” against their will solely based on their gender identity. The bill cites previous legal cases as evidence of the need for reform. In one high-profile case, Makyyla Holland, a transgender woman, sued Broome County following her six-week incarceration in 2021. She alleged she was denied hormone therapy, forced to disrobe in front of male officers, and housed with male inmates, leading to severe physical and emotional trauma. The case was settled for $160,000. “These lawsuits are not only tragic but costly to taxpayers,” Salazar noted. “It’s more efficient and humane to prevent harm through policy than to pay for it after the fact.” Correctional facilities in Broome, Jefferson, and Steuben counties have all faced lawsuits tied to the mistreatment of transgender inmates. Advocates say that providing affirming care and respecting inmates' identities can prevent abuse, reduce litigation, and improve safety for all inmates. Opposition to the bill has come from some conservative and religious groups who argue against public funding for gender-affirming procedures. The bill remains under review in the Senate Committee on Crime Victims, Crime and Correction. New York Considers Bill to Fund Transition Surgeries for Transgender Inmates
- Police Investigate Violent and Drunken Altercation Between Upstate New York Mayors at Country Club
Mayor Jeffrey Lanigan A dispute between the current and former mayors of Rome, New York, is now the subject of a criminal investigation following conflicting reports of an altercation at a local country club. The incident occurred Tuesday evening in the parking lot of Teugega Country Club, just outside the city of Rome and about 40 miles east of Syracuse. According to the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office, a complaint was filed involving current Mayor Jeffrey Lanigan and his predecessor, former Mayor Jim Brown. Both men are members of the Republican Party and once considered political allies. Former Mayor Brown, who led the city for two terms, claims the confrontation turned violent after he was blindsided by Lanigan. “I was speaking to someone, and before I could even react, he came up and slammed me into a car. Just boom—no warning,” Brown told CNY Central. He alleges Lanigan then told him, “We don’t want you here,” repeating the phrase twice. Brown says he sustained injuries to his arm that required treatment at a local hospital. In a separate statement, Brown described being "body-slammed" without provocation. “I didn’t see him coming. He caught me completely off guard.” Brown believes the attack was motivated by recent political criticism he made against Lanigan during a local radio appearance the day before the altercation. He had spent Tuesday golfing at the club and said the confrontation occurred as he was heading to his car. The Oneida County Sheriff's Office confirmed that deputies are reviewing surveillance footage from the country club’s parking lot. “We are in the process of collecting potential video evidence and witness statements,” Sheriff Robert Maciol said. Mayor Lanigan has offered a starkly different account. In a statement from his office, Lanigan denied any physical aggression and claimed Brown was visibly intoxicated at the time. “Mayor Lanigan simply placed a hand on Mr. Brown’s shoulder to get his attention,” the statement said. “Mr. Brown then became verbally hostile and flailed his arms.” The statement further asserted that Lanigan was acting out of concern, saying, “Recognizing Mr. Brown’s intoxicated state, the mayor guided him to his designated driver’s vehicle for his own safety. No physical assault occurred.” Brown, however, called Lanigan’s version of events “a complete lie.” He insists the mayor attacked him without justification. “I wasn’t drunk. I was blindsided,” Brown said. “He knows what he did.” Mayor Lanigan responded to the accusations with frustration, stating, “I’m disappointed in Mr. Brown’s recent public outbursts.” No charges have been filed, but officials say the investigation is moving swiftly. “We expect to conclude our investigation shortly and will be forwarding our findings to the Oneida County District Attorney’s Office for review,” Sheriff Maciol said. - Highly Contagious COVID Variant Detected in Six States, Including New York
A newly emerging strain of COVID-19, labeled NB.1.8.1, is raising concern among health officials due to its increased transmissibility and growing spread across the United States. Originating from China, the variant has been detected in travelers entering several states, including New York, California, Washington, Rhode Island, Virginia, and Hawaii. According to public health authorities, this variant began appearing in the U.S. in March and has seen a sharp uptick in cases since May. In California alone, NB.1.8.1's presence has risen rapidly, from just 2% in April to nearly 19% by June. Medical experts are particularly concerned that this new strain may lead to increased hospitalization rates due to its ability to spread more easily than previous variants. While current vaccines are still believed to offer protection against severe illness and symptomatic cases caused by NB.1.8.1, officials are closely monitoring its evolution. The World Health Organization has labeled NB.1.8.1 a “variant under monitoring,” citing its growing presence in more than 20 countries. Despite its international spread, no travel restrictions have been imposed at this time. Meanwhile, health systems in parts of China are seeing a significant rise in respiratory-related hospital visits. Reports indicate a jump in positive COVID-19 tests at emergency rooms with infection rates nearly doubling in recent weeks. In the U.S., the dominant COVID strain remains LP.8.1, currently accounting for approximately 73% of infections. Still, the emergence of NB.1.8.1 has sparked discussions about reintroducing safety precautions such as masking. Common symptoms associated with this strain mirror those of previous variants including fever, fatigue, coughing, shortness of breath, nausea, and loss of taste or smell. Many have tempted fate and risked it all to push the limits of human achievement at the thunderous brink of these monumental falls, drawing the awe and anticipation of onlookers from across the globe. However, in all the daring feats of heroism, there has been one extreme adventure left untouched, and it continues to reside in the realm of human audacity – attempting to survive the plunge over the Horseshoe Falls in a car. Yes, you heard it right – not a single daredevil to date has ever taken the plunge down the 188 feet (57m) drop of the Horseshoe Falls in a motor vehicle. There is a substantial line-up of thrilling attempts ranging from striding across on a tightrope to cascading down the gushing waters in a barrel, but none has been bold, or possibly audacious, enough to brave the rapids encased within a vehicle. Indeed, the awe-inspiring, raw power of the Falls – particularly the horseshoe-shaped waterfall that is most famously known as Horseshoe Falls, the most powerful waterfall in North America, – poses daunting, life-threatening challenges that serve as a colossal deterrent. With an average of 4 million cubic feet of water falling over the crestline every minute, the possibility of surviving such a perilous adventure seems to sit comfortably within the confines of implausibility. While vehicles have made an appearance in other extreme water feats – we've seen modified trucks plunge into the Bering Strait or specially prepared vehicles being navigated across shark-infested waters – the extraordinary magnitude of the Horseshoe Falls present a distinctly unsurmountable hurdle. Its severe rapids, sweeping currents, deadly plunge pool, not to mention the sheer noise and physical turbulence experienced, presents unique difficulties to vehicle structure, waterproofing and overall survival odds. Even the most successful daredevils have paid heavy prices. Annie Edson Taylor, the first person to survive a trip over Niagara Falls in a barrel in 1901, suffered a significant gash to her head, while many others, such as the tragic Bobby Leach, were less fortunate and ultimately paid the ultimate price in their pursuit of adventure. Thus, while the lure of the Horseshoe Falls is indisputable and the idea of plunging over its mighty edge in a vehicle continues to fascinate and enthrall, the dire risks attached have ensured this act remains firmly entrenched within the realms of the unconquered (and foolish).

A Sanborn woman has been sentenced to nearly a year in county jail following a deadly crash earlier this year that claimed one life and left another person seriously injured. Niagara County District Attorney Brian D. Seaman announced that 20-year-old Ninaatikwe A. Hamby was sentenced to 364 days in the Niagara County Jail by County Court Judge John Ottaviano. Hamby previously pleaded guilty to Vehicular Manslaughter in the Second Degree in connection with the February 25th, 2024 crash. The collision resulted in the death of one passenger and left another with serious injuries. “The outcome of Ms. Hamby’s decision to drive while under the influence of cannabis was the death of a family member,” Niagara County District Attorney Brian Seaman said after the plea hearing. “It just can’t be understated how dangerous it is to drive while under the influence of marijuana. Here the results are the complete devastation of a family.” The deceased passenger was 21-years-old. - Toxic Invasive Plant Spotted in Upstate New York; Public Urged to Stay Away
An invasive and highly toxic plant species has been discovered in parts of Western and Upstate New York, prompting a warning from local authorities. Giant hogweed is a dangerous plant known for its ability to cause severe skin irritation and long-lasting burns. In Western New York, it was identified along the shoreline of Seneca Bluffs Natural Habitat Park in Erie County. The Erie County Parks Department has confirmed multiple sightings and is working with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) to contain and manage the outbreak. This aggressive plant contains a sap that becomes harmful when exposed to sunlight. Contact with the skin will cause burning, leading to blistering, painful rashes, and in some cases permanent scarring. The chemical compounds within the sap are difficult to remove even with repeated washing. Giant hogweed is distinguishable by its towering height, large white umbrella-shaped flower clusters, and thick stems marked with purple blotches and bristly hairs, particularly near the joints of the plant. Local officials emphasize the importance of not touching or attempting to remove the plant without proper safety precautions. Anyone who believes they’ve spotted giant hogweed is encouraged to report it to the NYSDEC Hogweed Hotline at (845) 256-3111 for proper identification and removal procedures. Two teenagers are facing criminal charges after pushing a nun to the ground and stealing her car outside a private all-girls school in Amherst. The incident occurred just before 9am on April 10th at the Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart on Main Street where the nun works as a teacher. According to Amherst Police, the teens approached her under the pretense of needing help then grabbed her keys, shoved her aside, and fled the scene in her vehicle. According to a letter sent to parents by school officials, the nun sustained minor injuries. “The teacher received minor injuries from being pushed out of the way,” the letter states. The school also noted it would be evaluating campus safety protocols to determine if additional security measures are needed. Both teens have been charged with robbery and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. Because of their ages, they are being prosecuted in family court. Erie County District Attorney Michael Keane addressed the troubling rise in youth-involved vehicle thefts. “These kids are putting themselves in danger. They really are,” Keane said. “We see cases involving very serious injuries and death because someone thought it would be fun to steal a car. They should be mindful of that, because it happens so quickly. Next thing you know, people’s lives are destroyed.” Teens Arrested After Pushing Nun to Ground and Carjacking Her Vehicle Outside a School

- Dozens of Animals Rescued from Unsafe Niagara Falls Residence
Authorities in Niagara Falls rescued over 35 animals from a home on Ontario Avenue Wednesday morning, uncovering what officials described as unsafe and unsanitary living conditions for both humans and animals. Shortly after 10:30am, Niagara Falls Police and city Code Enforcement officers arrived at 1352 Ontario Avenue to investigate reports of people illegally occupying a condemned residence. The squatters were allegedly using a propane-powered generator inside the building, which is extremely dangerous. Officials said the property had been officially condemned since February 2024. The homeowner is reportedly living out of state and has neglected the property for some time. Upon entering the structure, officers and code inspectors discovered dozens of animals living inside, including several that were dead. In total, 35 cats and kittens, along with one dog, were found. Animal welfare workers from the Niagara SPCA, with assistance from the Erie County SPCA, carefully removed the animals and transported them to a shelter for medical treatment. Many of the cats, particularly the kittens, were suffering from respiratory and eye infections, according to SPCA. The rescued animals are now under veterinary care and, once healthy, will be available for adoption. Meanwhile, Niagara Falls Police and SPCA investigators have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the animals' condition and how they came to be in the condemned building. - New York Ranked Among Top States for UFO Sightings and Alien Encounters
If you're hoping for a glimpse of something (or someone) from another world, New York might be one of your best bets. According to recent data, the Empire State ranks fifth in the nation for reported UFO sightings and purported alien activity. The ranking, compiled by the National UFO Reporting Center (NUFORC) and analyzed by Casino.ca , a Canadian online gaming site, found that New York sees approximately one UFO report for every 1,301 residents. The study coincided with National Alien Abduction Day, observed annually on March 20th. Only four states outrank New York in extraterrestrial encounters. California leads the country in UFO reports followed by Washington, Florida, and Oregon. The NUFORC, which has tracked unexplained aerial phenomena since 1974, has logged over 6,100 sightings in New York alone. One of the most recent incidents, reported on March 11th in New Paltz, involved a disc-shaped object silently hovering in the night sky. These kinds of sightings continue to fuel speculation about life beyond Earth, and New York appears to be a frequent stop for extraterrestrials. While UFO sightings alone might not be enough to plan a road trip, Upstate New York offers several attractions for those fascinated by the paranormal. One of the most talked-about is Thompson Park in Watertown, rumored to contain a mysterious "vortex" that has earned it the nickname “Watertown’s Area 51.” Legend has it that visitors passing through certain parts of the park might experience momentary time shifts or other strange phenomena. - New York Considers Ban on Popular Non-Stick Cookware Over Health Concerns
A new proposal in Albany could soon make certain non-stick kitchen products illegal in New York State as lawmakers respond to growing health concerns linked to chemicals used in cookware. Over recent months, attention has intensified around public health and what Americans are exposed to (not just in the foods we eat but in the tools we use to prepare them). A major focus of concern is on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS which also referred to as "forever chemicals." According to state officials, these chemicals are used in popular non-stick coatings like Teflon. A new bill introduced in the New York State Senate aims to prohibit the production, sale, and distribution of cookware containing polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), a specific type of PFAS commonly found in non-stick kitchen products such as pots, pans, cooking utensils, and small appliances. These chemicals, known for their durability and resistance to heat, water, and oil, have raised alarms among health experts because of their persistence in the environment and potential harm to human health. The nickname “forever chemicals” comes from the fact that PFAS can take centuries to degrade and often accumulate in the human body over time. A recent report from the Make America Healthy Again Commission - led by U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. - highlighted a concerning link between PFAS and various health issues in children. The report cited evidence associating exposure to these substances with suppressed immune function and abnormal cholesterol levels in young people. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has also acknowledged that minimal exposure to PFAS can occur through food packaging and cookware. While the FDA currently permits their use, several states including Minnesota, Rhode Island, and Connecticut have passed legislation to restrict or phase out products containing these substances over the next few years. The proposed ban has faced resistance from industry groups like the Cookware Sustainability Alliance. Their argument is that the same materials used in non-stick cookware have long been FDA-approved for medical devices including pacemakers and maintain a record of safety. They emphasize that the coatings used are chemically stable, non-toxic, and do not dissolve in water or food. However, independent researchers remain cautious. A 2022 Australian study found that a single damaged area on a Teflon-coated pan could release over 9,000 microplastic particles, potentially adding to PFAS exposure during cooking. If passed, the proposed law could change the way millions of New Yorkers shop for and use cookware. New York Considers Ban on Popular Non-Stick Cookware Over Health Concerns

- Andrew Cuomo Expresses Regret Over Resigning as Governor, Criticizes Hochul
Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo says stepping down from office may have been a mistake, and he’s not holding back on his opinion of his successor’s performance. In a candid interview published Tuesday by The New York Times, Cuomo reflected on his 2021 resignation amid allegations of sexual misconduct. The former 3-term governor now says that, given the chance, he would have chosen to remain in office rather than stepping aside. “If I had to do it again, I wouldn’t have resigned,” Cuomo told the Times. He said he initially believed his presence would be too disruptive to the functioning of state government. “I thought impeachment proceedings would interfere with governance. But looking back... what major progress has been made in the last four years?” he added. That comment was widely interpreted as a direct jab at Governor Kathy Hochul who took office following Cuomo’s resignation. Though he didn’t mention her by name in that remark, he later doubled down when asked if he was criticizing her time in office. “You can evaluate the accomplishments of the past four years for yourself,” Cuomo responded, stopping short of direct condemnation but clearly casting doubt on her record. His comments, however, should not come as a surprise as there were rumors at the time of his resignation that Hochul was working behind the scenes to ensure his departure. Governor Hochul’s team fired back. Spokesperson Avi Small issued a pointed statement brushing off Cuomo’s remarks while subtly highlighting her administration’s successes. “Governor Hochul is focused on delivering results for New Yorkers—whether it’s keeping taxes down, addressing crime, or expanding access to affordable housing,” Small said. “It’s no surprise that many of the things Mr. Cuomo is now talking about align closely with her administration’s current efforts.” Cuomo, who has kept a relatively low profile since resigning, continues to deny all accusations of sexual harassment. As of today, he remains the frontrunner to win his current race for Mayor of New York City. Andrew Cuomo Expresses Regret Over Resigning as Governor, Criticizes Hochul

- Josh Allen’s Ex Brittany Williams Posts Salty NYC Instagram Post Following Marriage to Hailee Steinfeld
Brittany Williams, the former longtime girlfriend of Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen, took to Instagram with her first public post since Allen’s recent marriage to actress Hailee Steinfeld. On Monday, June 2nd, Williams shared a photo carousel from New York City showing her confidently enjoying a day in the city. Wearing a strapless maroon mini-dress paired with dark sunglasses and a chic handbag, she posed with a slice of New York-style pizza and a coffee in hand. Her caption read, “I like this little life 💕,” hinting at her contentment, and also a subtle jab at the NFL MVP. Williams and Allen had a years-long relationship that began in 2015 and ended in 2023. Not long after their split, Allen started seeing Steinfeld whose romance became public in May 2023. The two were engaged in November 2024 with Allen proposing in a heartfelt moment he later detailed in Steinfeld’s newsletter, Beau Society. After Josh Allen and Hailee Steinfeld announced their engagement on Friday, Williams deleted a comment she made in response to a user questioning whether she had found her "next athlete." She wrote, "Luckily my boyfriend owns a team and doesn't have to play for one. Don't have to be with another brain dead CTE athlete." The comment led to swift backlash and was deleted. Williams posted a story shortly thereafter claiming her account had been hacked. "My accounts have been hacked several times tonight. Trying to get it resolved. If anyone has any tips please [let me know]," she wrote. But back to Allen, his proposal, according to his account, included a simple, sincere ask to start a family and a future together — a moment that left Steinfeld surprised and elated. “I said, ‘I couldn’t wait any longer.’ I said, ‘I can’t wait to start a family with you,’” he recalled. “I said your full name, and I asked you very nicely. I said please.” On Saturday, May 31st, Allen and Steinfeld officially tied the knot in California. The bride wore a strapless white gown with classic opera gloves and a long veil. Earlier in February, Allen honored Steinfeld during the 2025 NFL Honors ceremony while accepting the MVP award. In his speech, he called her his “rock” and “best friend." - Tick-borne Illnesses Expected to Surge Across New York in 2025, Officials Warn
New York residents are being cautioned about a potential explosion in the tick population this year, which could lead to a sharp rise in dangerous tick-related illnesses. With warmer months upon us, environmental and health officials are urging the public to take preventive measures before heading outdoors. As spring transitions into summer, ticks that have remained dormant during colder months are now becoming active. Unlike many insects, ticks can survive through winter meaning they emerge in full force once temperatures rise. Experts say 2025 could bring one of the worst tick seasons in recent years. Following a relatively mild year for tick-borne diseases in 2024, epidemiologists warn that this pattern often precedes a spike in cases the following season. The New York State Department of Health reports that certain regions are already rated as “Extreme Risk” zones for tick activity. Other areas such as the Hudson Valley, Catskills, Capital Region, Upstate and Western New York are also at “High Risk.” While Lyme disease remains the most well-known tick-related illness, health officials are also concerned about the growing prevalence of anaplasmosis and babesiosis. These illnesses, also spread by tick bites, can cause severe complications and may be harder to diagnose in early stages. 8 Tick Species Found in New York Several species of ticks are active throughout New York, each with different health risks: - American Dog Tick : Known to carry Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. - Asian Longhorned Tick : First detected in the U.S. in 2017, often found on livestock and wildlife. - Brown Dog Tick : Mostly bites dogs, but can transmit diseases to humans. - Eastern Blacklegged Tick : Main vector for Lyme disease in New York. - Groundhog Tick : Rarely bites humans but can carry Lyme. - Lone Star Tick : Spreading northward; known for aggressive biting behavior. - Rabbit Tick : Typically infects rabbits, rarely humans, but can transmit Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. - Winter Tick : Active during colder months, usually found on deer and moose. Before Going Outside 1. Know Where Ticks Live Ticks prefer wooded, brushy areas and tall grasses. Be cautious when hiking, gardening, or walking your dog. 2. Treat Gear and Clothing Use Permethrin-based spray (.5%) on shoes, clothing, and gear before heading out. You can also purchase pre-treated items. 3. Apply EPA-Approved Repellents Choose repellents with DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus. Always follow label instructions. 4. Stick to the Center of Trails Avoid brushing against vegetation by walking in the center of paths or trails. After Returning Indoors 5. Inspect Clothing Immediately Check and remove any ticks from clothes. Toss clothes in a hot dryer for at least 10 minutes to kill lingering ticks. 6. Do a Full-Body Check Examine your body thoroughly, especially behind ears, knees, underarms, and around the waistline. 7. Check Pets Ticks often latch onto animals. Examine your pets' ears, paws, and underbelly, and consider using veterinarian-approved tick prevention. 8. Inspect All Gear Backpacks, jackets, and other gear can harbor ticks. - New COVID Variant Detected in New York Amid Shift in Vaccine Guidance
A newly emerging COVID-19 strain has made its way to New York just as federal health agencies ease vaccine recommendations for certain groups. Although the pandemic has waned, federal health officials and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have confirmed the presence of a novel Omicron subvariant, NB181, in several parts of the United States, including New York. This strain, first tied to a surge in China, is believed to spread more easily than the previously dominant variant, LP.8.1. Health experts caution that this new wave could trigger a spike in infections during the summer months. The news comes at a time when federal agencies are adjusting their public health strategy. Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. recently announced that the CDC has revised its COVID-19 vaccine guidance. The updated recommendations no longer advise vaccination for healthy children or pregnant individuals. Additionally, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has stated that routine COVID-19 vaccine approvals will no longer apply to healthy adults or children. While there are no federal vaccine mandates in place, those in New York who wish to receive an updated COVID shot can still do so but may need to cover the cost themselves as public funding is no longer guaranteed for all individuals. As cases rise, New Yorkers are urged to monitor their health closely, especially for symptoms associated with severe illness. According to the World Health Organization and CDC, the following symptoms may indicate the need for urgent medical care: -Persistent fever or chills -Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing -Fatigue or muscle aches -Sore throat or persistent cough -New loss of taste or smell -Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea -Chest pain -Dizziness or light-headedness -Signs of dehydration Children may exhibit different warning signs such as refusal to eat, confusion, bluish lips or face, or difficulty breastfeeding in infants. While COVID restrictions have largely disappeared and vaccines are now optional for most, health experts stress that the virus will continue to evolve leading to several variants in the future. - New York Urged to Prepare as Experts Warn of Intense Hurricane Season
Image credit: NOAA Meteorologists are sounding the alarm for residents of New York State as forecasts indicate an active and potentially dangerous Atlantic hurricane season. With storm activity expected to surpass average levels, officials are encouraging early preparation to ensure safety. The Atlantic hurricane season officially begins on June 1 and runs through November 30. This year, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) estimates a 60% likelihood of a season that exceeds typical storm activity, with only a 10% chance of below-normal conditions. These projections follow a record-setting 2024 season and are raising concern across the East Coast, including New York. Emergency management agencies are urging the public to be prepared, stressing that readiness efforts should begin now before any potential storm strikes. Building an emergency kit is a key part of that preparation. Here’s a recommended list of essential items to include in your emergency kit: -Water: One gallon per person per day to cover drinking and basic sanitation needs. -Non-perishable food: Choose ready-to-eat or easy-to-prepare items with long shelf lives. -Flashlight: A reliable light source is vital during power outages. -Battery-powered or hand-crank radio: Stay informed if communication networks go down. -Spare batteries: Ensure your flashlights and radios stay operational. -First aid kit: Essential for treating minor injuries when medical help may be delayed. -Cell phone and charger: Include a portable power bank or backup battery as well. -Cash: Power outages may disable ATMs and card readers, making cash transactions necessary. -Important documents: Copies of IDs, insurance papers, and medical records should be stored in waterproof packaging. -Whistle: Useful for signaling for help in an emergency. -Sanitation supplies: Toilet paper, garbage bags with ties, and hygiene products like soap, toothbrushes, and feminine products. -Manual can opener: Important for accessing canned food when electricity isn’t available. -Spare clothing: A change of clothes for each household member is advised. -Duct tape and plastic sheeting: Can be used to seal off spaces during shelter-in-place orders. Authorities continue to monitor tropical storm developments and advise the public to stay informed through official weather channels and local emergency services. A man from Oneida, New York, is facing multiple charges after state troopers encountered him urinating on the side of the road in the early morning hours of June 1st. According to New York State Police, the incident took place around 3:12am along State Route 365 in the Town of Verona. Troopers on patrol noticed a vehicle parked along the highway shoulder with its driver-side door wide open. As they approached the scene, they saw a man relieving himself directly in the roadway. The individual was identified as 23-year-old Matthew Keenan. Officers say Keenan appeared impaired, and upon inspecting the vehicle they found multiple open containers of alcohol inside. - Upstate Strip Club Owner Says Business will not Close Despite Federal Seizure Efforts
Despite a looming forfeiture attempt by the federal government, the owner of an Upstate New York strip club is standing firm and insisting his business isn’t going anywhere. Peter Gerace, currently incarcerated in Chautauqua County Jail, remains unshaken following a motion filed by federal authorities to seize Pharaoh’s Gentlemen’s Club. Gerace was found guilty earlier this year of operating the Cheektowaga establishment as a front for drug distribution and sex trafficking activities. Prosecutors argue that the club was a hub for illegal behavior, supported by testimony from former employees and patrons. Gerace has already sold his home in Clarence, reportedly for over a million dollars, to fund his legal defense. He contends that the government’s narrative is built on unreliable witnesses, some of whom he claims had personal grudges or were incentivized to testify. He has maintained that multiple previous investigations - including federal raids in both 2009 and 2019 - produced no conclusive evidence. According to Gerace, federal agents reviewed weeks of surveillance footage without uncovering any proof of the criminal conduct alleged in court. Authorities, however, relied heavily on witness accounts to build their case. Testimonies depicted a venue where illegal drug use and sex-for-money transactions were commonplace. Prosecutors maintain that these firsthand accounts, supported by a broader investigation, paint an accurate picture of what occurred behind closed doors. In a related legal development, Gerace is also facing charges under a separate indictment. He and others are accused of plotting to kill a potential witness connected to the Pharaoh’s investigation. That witness, Crystal Quinn, a former employee of the club, died in 2023 from what officials determined was a drug overdose. Prosecutors allege the death may have been orchestrated to appear accidental. Gerace, however, describes Quinn as a close friend and claims she had been under extreme duress due to threats of imprisonment from prosecutors. Gerace’s defense team has been seeking access to grand jury transcripts related to Quinn’s testimony, arguing that her statements were manipulated. Although a magistrate judge agreed to privately review the documents for potential inconsistencies, federal prosecutors recently moved to block that review, requesting intervention from a higher court. As he awaits sentencing, Gerace continues to deny the charges against him. Despite the setbacks and the forfeiture threat, he remains adamant that his club will not be taken from him.
