The Village of Lewiston, located only ten (10) minutes away from Niagara Falls, is said to be the “most historic square mile in America.” As it turns out, there are several very good reasons giving merit to the claim. Historic Town of Lewiston < Back About: The Village of Lewiston, located only ten (10) minutes away from Niagara Falls, is said to be the “most historic square mile in America.” As it turns out, there are several very good reasons giving merit to the claim. For example, Lewiston was the site of the first European settlement in Western New York in 1720. It is the site of the American invasion of Canada in 1812, which was later burned to the ground by the British in December of 1813. Lewiston also happened to be the last stop for slaves using the underground railroad seeking freedom from slavery in Canada. In addition to the various historical significances, you can actually see how the power of Niagara Falls, one of the world’s mightiest wonders, over thousands of years, eroded south through seven miles of solid rock to its present location now in the City of Niagara Falls. A path that is visible by following the Niagara Gorge which begins in Lewiston. Lewiston is also home to the cocktail drink, which was invented by Catherine Hustler. Ms. Hustler’s tavern in Lewiston was the last building left standing when the British invaded, perhaps, as some say, because the British Officers recalled their good times sipping a “Cocktail” prepared by the owner. A gin mixture, the drink got its name from being stirred with a tail feather of a stuffed cockerel (a young male of the domestic fowl). Lewiston sits on the Niagara River directly across from Canada and halfway between Niagara Falls and historic Fort Niagara in Youngstown. The business district of Lewiston, stretching for more than a mile on Center Street, is definitely worth walking. The dozens of shops and restaurants that line the street give it a small town feel that you would never experience in a larger, more commercial, setting. Also stunning are the homes and buildings, now renovated into shops or restaurants, that were constructed during the 1800’s and still standing today. There are many popular festivals in Lewiston throughout the year, such as the Art Festival, Peach Festival, Taste of Lewiston, and Jazz Festival. One of the better known attractions in Lewiston, and in fact the entire Western New York region, is Artpark. An indoor-outdoor theater complex that is home to performing and visual arts presentations, shows, and concerts, throughout the summer months. Lewiston is a must-see stop for visitors who wish to experience the brilliance and wonder of what the Niagara Region has to offer. • Niagara Falls State Park: The Oldest State Park in the United States

Niagara Falls State Park is open 365 days a year, and it's always free to walk into the Park and experience the Falls! Today, the park’s signature attraction, the majestic Niagara Falls, is the dramatic apex of the free-flowing waters of four of the Great Lakes into the Niagara River Gorge. Niagara Falls State Park: The Oldest State Park in the United States < Back About: Niagara Falls State Park is open 365 days a year, and it's always free to walk into the Park and experience the Falls! Today, the park’s signature attraction, the majestic Niagara Falls, is the dramatic apex of the free-flowing waters of four of the Great Lakes into the Niagara River Gorge. But that wasn’t always the case. During the Industrial Revolution of the early 19th Century, the natural beauty of Niagara Falls began to suffer as earnest industrialists built mills and factories along the river to harness its power. By the late 1860s, a small band of early environmentalists, including landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, who were concerned over the river’s waning flow, founded the Free Niagara movement. The movement believed that the natural beauty of the land surrounding the Falls should be protected from commercial interests and exploitation, and remain free to the public. Members urged New York State to reclaim the Falls and the surrounding area. After more than 15 years of pressure, the Free Niagara crusaders won their battle. The Niagara Appropriations Bill was signed into law in 1885, creating the Niagara Reservation and signifying possibly the most important event in Niagara Falls’ history. New York State Assemblyman Thomas Vincent Welch was a prominent figure in getting the bill signed and later went on to serve as the first superintendent of America’s oldest state park. Frederick Law Olmsted, perhaps best known for designing New York City’s Central Park, believed that parks should be places of natural beauty, where “the masses could be renewed.” This philosophy was applied throughout Olmsted’s landscape design for Niagara Falls State Park, with an entire network of footpaths through wooded areas and along the banks of the Niagara River. Today, the oldest American State Park retains Olmsted’s vision by staying committed to maintaining native vegetation, preserving its unparalleled vistas and providing public access. Visitors from around the world are entranced by the thundering wonder of Niagara Falls, a grand tribute to the men and women who fought to preserve it for all. • Niagara Whirlpool Loop Hiking Trail

Discover the less-trodden side of Niagara at the Niagara Whirlpool Loop Hiking Trail. This hiking treasure offers a well-constructed staircase and trail leading from the parking lot all the way to the river bank. Especially during the autumn months, the landscape boasts breath-taking hues, creating a visual treat for nature lovers. The long staircases may present a challenging trek, but the stunning vistas of the Niagara river will surely be worth it! < Back Niagara Whirlpool Loop Hiking Trail About: Experience this spectacular 2.9-mile trail situated near Queenston, Ontario. Its moderately difficult terrain typically takes about 1 hour and 19 minutes to traverse, proving an exhilarating adventure for seasoned hikers. Known for birding, hiking, and snowshoeing, expect to meet fellow nature enthusiasts during your exploration. You can enjoy this trail the most from March to November. Please note that dogs are permitted, but should be kept on a leash at all times. Starting at the Nature Centre, the trail winds leisurely through verdant forests, taking you to the Niagara Gorge base. The most captivating part of the journey lies along the waterside sections, also known as the Whirlpool Trails. Here, massive boulders beckon climbers, and during summer, you might find tranquil spots for a quick toe-dip to beat the heat. But be cautious, as flooding during high-water seasons might reroute the trail. Upper trail areas are quite safe for family activities but can get busy during weekends. Due to flooding risks and rocky terrains, the lower areas might not be suitable for children. Be ready to experience a new facet of the Niagara area - all wrapped up in the allure of this exciting trail! Buffalo Canalside / Outer Harbor < Back About: Come for views and stay for the fun! Located only 25 minutes from Niagara Falls is the beautiful and always exciting Canalside in Buffalo. Canalside is the heart of Buffalo’s waterfront revitalization. It’s located in the city’s downtown corridor at the intersection of Pearl Street and Marine drive. The Erie Canal Harbor was originally built in 1825 as the western terminus of the Erie Canal. In its heyday, America’s “Gateway to the West” was one of the world’s greatest business centers, teeming with canal and rail traffic passing from the Atlantic seaboard across the Great Lakes. For much of the 19th century it was truly an industrious port that bustled with people and goods from all over the world. As a result of this prodigious commercial activity, by 1850 Buffalo was transformed from a small waterfront village into a thriving metropolis—eventually becoming the largest inland port in the nation as well as the unofficial grain capital of North America. While Erie Canal Harbor and its “Central Wharf” represented the epicenter of commerce and trade in Buffalo, the surrounding canal district neighborhood enjoyed a much more ambiguous reputation. Home to a diverse cross-section of canal-era inhabitants and transient visitors, the district’s saloons, hotels and other establishments buzzed with activity, and the crime rate reflected it. The arrival of trains and automobiles in the early 20th century led to the ultimate demise of Erie Canal Harbor as a functional hub of commerce. In time, the site was covered over with stone and dirt to make way for modern streets and vehicle parking. The harbor rested in this state until 2005, when the Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation was formed, and the area was reclaimed for restoration as one of America’s brightest historical treasures. Canalside is the jewel in Buffalo’s waterfront crown. The result of over $300 million in new development, Canalside hosts over 1,000 annual events. Every summer, outdoor yoga, children’s activities, maker markets, concerts and countless other events take place on a daily basis. Check online for what is happening at Canalside during your stay!! • The Crystal Caves - A Mirror Maze Adventure

the-crystal-caves---a-mirror-maze-adventure- < Back The Crystal Caves - A Mirror Maze Adventure In the year 1884, a grand endeavor began atop Clifton Hill. The ambitious plan was to construct a railroad station for Niagara Falls, Canada, and to make way for this project, hundreds of pounds of dynamite were assembled. Little did they know that the first explosions would unleash more than they could have ever imagined. As the earth trembled, workers discovered a remarkable sight—a network of deep caverns carved out of crystal, hidden just beneath the surface. These icy tunnels were so clear that the men could see their own reflections in the walls. With each blast, new caves were revealed, and the earth grew increasingly unstable. Eventually, when the station was completed, all entryways were sealed off, and the treacherous labyrinth was left forgotten... or so the legend tells. A century later, tragedy struck when a fire engulfed much of the historic railroad site. As rescuers combed through the rubble on the surrounding property, they stumbled upon a dark hole nestled amidst the rocks. Just big enough for a person to squeeze through, it confirmed the stories that had been passed down through generations. Inside, they found a breathtaking spectacle—a maze of crystal caves adorned with jutting crystals and lined with shimmering ice. Wooden bridges teetered precariously, and ceilings crumbled above. Today, you have the opportunity to be among the first in over a hundred years to set foot in this mirrored maze of crystal caves. But before you enter, be certain that you possess the mettle to find your way out, for within these infinite passageways, one risks becoming lost forever.
