While engaged in a traffic stop along Hyde Park Boulevard around 12:30am on May 22nd, an Officer from the Niagara Falls Police Department started to be verbally accosted by a female who parked nearby and got out of her vehicle. The female, who was not involved in the traffic stop, started yelling at the officer and driver that he had pulled over. The driver and female are friends. The female was warned that if she continues to make a scene by yelling, swearing and disturbing people who were trying to go inside/leave 7-Eleven, she was going to be arrested. She was also advised that if she continued yelling and swearing at the officer, and causing an interference with his investigation, that she would be arrested for obstruction of justice and disorderly conduct. The female still continued to yell and swear. The officer told her again that she is going to be arrested if she continued, to which she replied, “fuc* you. I bet you won’t arrest me.” The officer then started approaching the female who was now in the street and informed her that she was under arrest. The female then ran around her vehicle and into the 7-Eleven parking lot. She continued running until the officer was able to catch up to her, at which point she was detained. The female was arrested and transported to Niagara Falls police headquarters for processing and was released with an appearance ticket.

On May 24, 2024 at approximately 4:48 pm, The Niagara Falls Police Department Crash Investigation Unit responded to the intersection of Hyde Park Blvd and Cleveland Ave to investigate a two vehicle accident involving a motorcycle. A 2008 Ford Fusion operated by a 20 year old Niagara Falls woman was attempting to make a left hand turn off of Cleveland Avenue to travel north on Hyde Park Blvd when it collided with a Harley Davidson that was southbound on Hyde Park Blvd. It appears the motorcycle had the right of way. The driver of the motorcycle and his passenger were taken to ECMC for treatment of broken bones and internal injuries. At this time they are still being evaluated. The driver of the Ford was taken to Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center with minor injuries. The Crash Investigation Unit is continuing the investigation and charges are pending.

At 1:37pm today (05/24/24) patrol units were dispatched to 2489 LaSalle Ave. for a report of shots fired.  Upon arrival Officers found three (3) victims of gunshot wounds. Officers secured the scene and began treating injuries until NFFD and AMR arrived.  All 3 victims were taken to ECMC.  One victim sustained a life-threatening injury and is undergoing surgery at this time.  The other two are considered non-life threatening. The victim 's names are not being released at this time.  This investigation is ongoing. Niagara Falls Police responded to the Coastal gas station on the 600 block of 19th Street around 1:40am on May 22nd after reports that a car was stolen. Upon arrival, police spoke to the complainant who stated he had stopped at Coastal to grab a “beer for the night.” He parked his car in front of pump #3 and went inside with the car keys in his pocket. The complainant stated he left the car running but did not think anyone could drive it without the keys. While at the register with his beer, a good Samaritan came into the store and advised the complainant that someone had taken off with his vehicle. The value of the car is $20,000. Officers observed security footage which showed a black male wearing a green hoodie, standing in front of the store. The unknown suspect walked up to pump #3, went around to the driver’s side door, got into the car and took off northbound towards Pine Avenue. There was also a male in the video who attempted to stop the suspect from taking the vehicle but was not successful. Police canvassed the area with negative results. No further information is available at this time.

Lockport Alderman Mark Devine, a Republican, has been charged with two counts of harassment in the second degree after allegedly urinating outside his home in the presence of children. The incident occurred on April 11 and was reported by a neighbor. The police consulted with the Niagara County District Attorney's Office, and the case was sent to a city judge who issued a criminal summons for Devine. He appeared in court on Monday and is scheduled to return on June 3.

Niagara Falls Police responded to Family Dollar on the 2100 block of Hyde Park Boulevard around 4:00pm on May 20th after reports that a female was caught shoplifting and, upon being escorted out of the store, kicked the door causing it to shatter. Upon arrival, police spoke with the store manager and complaining employee who stated that a white female walked into the store with a large black duffle bag and immediately began filling it with items from around the store. Store personnel believed that she was attempting to shoplift and confronted her. The female emptied her bag, which contained several items, and was asked to leave as she was no longer permitted on the premises. An employee walked the female to the exit and locked the door after she had exited to prevent re-entry. The female then began to yell obscenities at her, turned around and kicked the door causing glass to spider and break. The female then fled. Police canvassed the area with negative results. No further information is available at this time.

Upon arrival, police spoke to the complainant who stated that he was being chased down the street by a male with a knife. He was sleeping in his car when he heard the male yelling in his direction “where are you at?!” The complainant exited the vehicle and observed the male holding a knife at eye level. He told the male to put down the knife and they could fight with fists, but the male said no. It was clear that these individuals knew each other. At this point the complainant fled on foot and while running his shoes fell off. The male took the shoes and stabbed them with his knife, destroying them. The total cost of damaged property is $215.00. The male was taken into custody and transported to police headquarters for processing. No further information is available at this time.

Upon arrival, officers were met by a male who appeared both angry and upset, yelling and screaming while walking down the street. As he walked the male was knocking over and throwing multiple garbage cans and recycling bins. Officers believed that the male’s actions served no legitimate purpose and was causing obstructions to both the sidewalk and street due to garbage/garbage cans being strewn everywhere. While in the patrol vehicle, the male stated that he was “littering” because people have left dirty pampers diapers around his yard. Officers placed the male under arrest and transported him to police headquarters for processing before he was released. No further information is available at this time.

Niagara Falls Police responded to the 1100 block of Linwood Avenue around 10:30pm on May 19th after reports that a puppy was stolen. Upon arrival, police spoke to the complainant who stated that he had gotten home from work around 9:00pm and discovered his dog to be missing. The front door was closed but not locked, and the complainant spoke with complete certainty that he had locked the door when leaving earlier in the day around 3:00pm. The complainant went through the residence and could not find the dog anywhere. Nothing appeared to be touched other than the dog being gone. He did not know who would have wanted to take the dog. The complainant stated that he leaves his dog in a room with the side window open, which could have been used to gain access into the house. The dog could not escape out of the window. Officers could not observe any damage or sign of forced entry, nor was there any video surveillance in the area that would have captured the incident. The dog is a 6-month-old male Cane Corso / Pitbull dark in color. There are no witnesses or suspects at this time. No further information is available at this time.

Niagara Falls Police responded to the 3000 block of Livingston Avenue around 4:00pm on May 19th after reports of a burglary that occurred while the homeowner was doing yard work. Upon arrival, police spoke to the complainant who stated she was outside doing yard work for several hours. While doing so, she had left her garage open. After returning to her garage, the complainant observed hedge trimmers, a weed whacker, and rototiller to be missing. The total amount of the stolen items is $860.00. No further information is available at this time, nor are there any suspects, of the Niagara Falls burglar who struck while the homeowner was doing yard work.

Niagara Falls Police responded to Tops on Niagara Falls Boulevard around 10:30am on May 19th after reports of criminal mischief where a male attempted to break into a claw machine. Upon arrival, police spoke to the grocery manager who stated that a male holding a flannel shirt with a crowbar inside of it was captured on surveillance footage attempting to pry open the coin bank. The suspect was a thin white male with a beard wearing a grey polo shirt, blue shirt and a baseball cap. The suspect attempts to open the machine for approx. 7 minutes before leaving and entering the passenger side of a white vehicle. No further information is available.

Niagara Falls Police responded to Family Dollar on the 800 block of Portage Road around 6:00pm on May 17th after reports of shoplifting, which was later changed to disorderly conduct. Upon arrival, police spoke to the store manager who explained that he observed a black female in a wheelchair stuffing bedsheets inside of her bookbag. He further stated that this female had shoplifted from the store on several prior occasions but has never been apprehended. Officers had arrived while this was still happening and waited by the cash register for the female to pass all points of sale. The female must have caught on to what was transpiring because she tried throwing random items onto the counter demanding money in return for them. She also kept trying to have the cashier run the new items she wished to purchase as well. Officers believed she was trying to scam the cashier. At this point officers intervened and asked the female if she had concealed any items in her bag, to which she responded “fuc*” several times. Two bedsheets, a bottle of maple syrup and beauty care products were removed. Several of the customers were audibly shocked at the female’s behavior, including a male in dreads who laughed and stated, “this shi* is crazy.” Lewis started to yell so loudly that a vein popped out of her neck and forehead. The cashier’s hands started to shake as she was alarmed by the yelling. “Get the fuc* off me,” “back the fuc* up off me, and “your dic* is in my face,” she yelled at the top of her lungs. The female was placed under arrest and transported to police headquarters for booking. No further information is available.

Niagara Falls Police responded to McDonald's on the 1700 block of Pine Avenue (City Market) around 11:30pm after reports of a stolen vehicle. Upon arrival, police spoke to the complainant who stated that a light-skinned black male stole her vehicle. The suspect’s description was provided by a witness who was no longer on the scene. The suspect allegedly circled the vehicle a couple of times before jumping in and driving away. The complainant told Niagara Falls Police that the stolen vehicle was left unattended several hundred feet away from the McDonald's, unlocked and with the keys inside while she grabbed a door dash order. Officers issued the complainant a ticket for leaving the vehicle unattended, which was a 2010 Dodge Caliber. No further information is available.

Niagara Falls Police responded to the 400 block of 72nd Street around 9:30pm after reports that a male jogger was assaulted by juveniles while getting his nightly “cardio" in. Upon arrival, police spoke with the complainant who stated that he was starting his nightly cardio when a vehicle with three white juvenile males pulled up and asked his name. The complainant responded that he was not the individual they were looking for, at which point one of the males wearing a hood exited the vehicle and slapped him across the face. He also kicked him. The complainant stated he did not have any injuries nor did he want to be evaluated by AMR. Instead, the complainant asked police to drive him home because he was scared. By: Ken Cosentino This past Friday, the Niagara Gazette’s investigative journalist Mark Scheer published an editorial entitled “Economists on sports venue public financing: ‘read the fine print’.” Scheer astutely compared expert analyses on the public funding of the new Buffalo Bills stadium with Mayor Robert Restaino’s proposed use of public funding for his event center. The verdict: Not so good for the taxpayers. According to Scheer, economic experts participated in a webinar presented by EconoFact this past Thursday. Those experts cautioned heavily about the use of public funding for stadiums and sports venues. And while Restaino has pushed for a $140,000 feasibility study, the experts “warned against blindly accepting the findings of economic impact studies for any such project. They instead suggested taxpayers consider what Matheson described as roughly 30 years of research and 150 peer-reviewed articles that demonstrate, almost uniformly, that sports, even professional sports, have little to no economic impact on the wider area surrounding a stadium or arena.” New York State Governor Kathy Hochul has said that she supports Restaino’s vision pending the results of a feasibility study. Hochul also supports corporate welfare for her billionaire benefactors. She has also experienced a meteoric drop in her public ratings due to her panhandling of the new Bills stadium. Hochul has dedicated $850 million in taxpayer dollars to the new stadium. Concerning the potential for private partnerships, Scheer writes; “City officials have said they are working with at least two private partners, including Niagara University and Seneca Niagara Casino, who may play a role in filling the venue with sporting events or concerts.” There have been no formal commitments or public statements in recent times from either Niagara University nor the Seneca Niagara Casino to provide financial support of the event center. Mayor Restaino leans on this speculation whenever he is interviewed about the costs of the Niagara Falls event center and use of public funds; despite his inability to produce any official agreement. Falls taxpayers should wonder whether Niagara University has the ability to commit to a $30,000 plus daily rental payment to cover just the interest rate on the city’s proposed federal loan. Corporate welfare and trickle down voodoo economics are embedded within Governor Hochul’s administration; while Mayor Restaino has his hand out asking New York State to help solely cover the costs of the event center. Hochul, whose focus in Niagara Falls has been limited to Delaware North’s cash cow in Niagara Falls State Park, won’t climb into bed with Restaino just yet. New York State has committed $75,000 towards their own independent feasibility study regarding the event center. Between the state and the city, that’s a total of $215,000 in mostly taxpayer dollars for feasibility studies just to see if the event center is even worth the investment. Yet that hasn’t stopped Mayor Restaino from pushing forward with his eminent domain lawsuit, which is expected to cost taxpayers millions of dollars. If we base that estimate on the city’s previous eminent domain settlement (Niagara Splash Park), the number may ultimately be as high as $25 million. It’s no wonder that Restaino’s administration denied Mark Scheer’s original request for HUD documents relating to a potential loan towards his pipe dream. The economic experts with the EconoFact’s webinar are not the first professionals to warn Niagara Falls taxpayers about Restaino’s lofty plans for funding the event center. Prior to becoming the Vice President of Entertainment at the prestigious Foxwoods Resort Casino, Christian Printup was the Senior Executive Director of Entertainment & Special Events for the Seneca Niagara Casino. Here is a list of Printup’s concerns regarding Restaino’s proposed event center (originally published in an opinion editorial last year): Concern #1: “First, financial resources in the City of Niagara Falls are limited so, I don’t think the city is making a very smart business move in trying to take NFR’s land and what promises to be a long eminent domain fight winding through the courts. Time is money, and even if the city wins, it will be paying top dollar for a venue that may not pay for itself.” Concern #2: “The arena size being discussed is probably too large, and — in my experience— the location will face challenges booking enough dates to break even, never mind pay the debt service on the funds borrowed to acquire the land and build.” Concern #3: “Who are the anchor tenants going to be? Minor league hockey? A local university? Neither will provide enough dates to underwrite the facility nor can they afford the rent unless it is subsidized by the city.” Concern #4: “I think the various arenas and event centers In Buffalo, and Niagara Falls, Ont., would get most of the shows that the currently proposed arena would need to succeed.” As far as entertainment goes, Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut is considered world class. The three individuals killed after a train crashed into a vehicle in North Tonawanda on Friday night have been identified. The North Tonawanda Police Department has identified the victims as 6-year-old Ra'Mari Geldart of Buffalo, 66-year-old Olive Geldart of North Tonawanda, and 69-year-old David McMinn of North Tonawanda. ORIGINAL STORY The North Tonawanda Police Department is investigating a severe collision that occurred on Friday night involving an Amtrak train and a pickup truck. Tragically, three individuals in the truck lost their lives as a result of the crash. The incident took place around 8pm on the tracks near the intersection of River Road and Felton. Video footage revealed the devastating sight of a passenger vehicle completely crushed by the train. The vehicle was dragged for several hundred feet before the train came to a stop. Amtrak has released a statement stating that the vehicle had obstructed the track resulting in a collision with train 281, which was en route from New York to Niagara Falls. No injuries have been reported among the 21 passengers and crew members on board the Amtrak train. An investigation into the incident remains ongoing.

Niagara Falls Police responded to Walmart on May 16th after reports of a shoplifter. Upon arrival, police spoke with the loss prevention worker who stated that a male placed a fishing pole and box of Dove soap under his backpack on the top of his cart and passed all points of entry without rendering payment. These items are valued at $75.57. The male was transported to police headquarters where he was processed and released on an appearance ticket. No further information is available.

On May 16th, Niagara Falls Police responded to 7-Eleven on the 2600 block of Niagara Street around 2:15am after male waves a knife around at employees. Upon arrival, officers spoke with the store manager who stated the cashier was about to close for the night when an unknown light-skinned male known as ‘Faultersack’ walked in demanding someone call 911. According to the manager, the individual was very rule and belligerent. Believing that no one was trying to help him, he became extremely irate. He would not tell store employees what was going on. He then pulled out a knife and started waving it around in a threatening manner. “So ya’ll not gonna call me an ambulance,” the male yelled. He kept walking in and out of the store before going up to the counter again, saying, “do you want me to clear everything out?” After calling 911, the male ran out of the store, got on an electric scooter, and fled.
