A 74-year-old woman has died following a motor vehicle accident Thursday afternoon in the Town of Newfane.
According to the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office, a 911 call was received reporting a single-vehicle crash on Lockport-Olcott Road near Hatter Road. Callers told dispatchers that the vehicle’s operator was unresponsive and not breathing.
Deputies and members of the Miller Hose Volunteer Fire Company responded to the scene and confirmed the driver was unresponsive. First responders immediately began life-saving measures, including the use of an Automatic External Defibrillator. The woman was transported by ambulance to Lockport Memorial Hospita. She was pronounced deceased a short time later.
An initial investigation revealed the woman had been traveling southbound in a 2014 Chevrolet when the vehicle began to gradually slow and drift across the northbound lane. Witnesses reported the vehicle then left the roadway on the east side, struck the perimeter fencing of Corwin Cemetery, and came to rest against a tree. Authorities said the vehicle sustained only minor damage.
Investigators believe the driver suffered a medical emergency that precipitated the crash. She was the sole occupant of the vehicle.
The Sheriff’s Office stated the woman’s name is being withheld pending notification of her family.
