Niagara Falls Man Sentenced to 19 Years in Prison for Bloody Hammer Attack on Gas Station Clerk

A Niagara Falls man who admitted to carrying out a violent hammer attack on a gas station employee during a robbery has been sentenced to nearly two decades in state prison.

State Supreme Court Judge Mario Giacobbe imposed a 19-year prison sentence Tuesday on 59-year-old Darrion A. Cotton following his guilty plea to first-degree assault. The conviction stems from a January 19th, 2024 attack at a gas station located at 63rd and Buffalo Avenue in Niagara Falls.

Cotton admitted in court that he seriously injured a 57-year-old cashier during the early morning robbery, striking her repeatedly in the head with a hammer. Prosecutors said the assault occurred shortly after 7am. It was captured on the store’s surveillance cameras.

Originally charged with both first-degree robbery and first-degree assault, Cotton ultimately pleaded guilty to the assault charge as part of a deal with prosecutors. The robbery count was dismissed.

Niagara County District Attorney Brian Seaman credited law enforcement with building the case and emphasized the severity of the crime.

“The Niagara Falls Police Department did an outstanding job in identifying the individual responsible for this horrendous attack,” said Seaman. “The defendant had three prior felony convictions and had made three prior trips to state prison. This sentence will protect the community from this dangerous and violent individual.”

The investigation into the attack began with a lead from Niagara Falls Police Patrol Officer Joshua Salada whose prior encounter with Cotton proved critical in identifying him as a suspect.

According to investigators, surveillance video showed Cotton entering the store from the rear of the gas station property before immediately launching the attack on the clerk. Authorities described the assault as sudden and unprovoked.

The victim suffered serious injuries and was first transported to Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center before being transferred to Erie County Medical Center for additional treatment.

After the attack, investigators said Cotton stole an undisclosed amount of cash along with cigarettes and other merchandise before leaving the store. Surveillance footage captured him walking east along Buffalo Avenue from 68th Street following the incident.
