- Indigenous Tribal Nations Gather to Honor Rare White Buffalo Calf in Yellowstone, Turning Point in History
Photo credit Buffalo Field Campaign Indigenous Tribal Nations from across the United States gathered in West Yellowstone, Montana, on Wednesday, June 26th, to pay homage to a remarkable event - the birth of a white buffalo calf in Yellowstone National Park's Lamar Valley on June 4th. The ceremonious occasion was led by Chief Arvol Looking Horse, the esteemed Leader of the Lakota and 19th Generation Keeper of the Sacred White Buffalo Calf Pipe and Bundle. The event garnered national media attention, attracting Tribal Council members, Tribal representatives, and over 500 individuals who came together to honor the sacred calf and celebrate the rich heritage of the buffalo people. The ceremony took place at the Buffalo Field Campaign (BFC) headquarters, situated on the territory of the Shoshone-Bannock. Chief Arvol Looking Horse bestowed a significant name upon the white buffalo calf calling it Wakan Gli, which translates to "Sacred Return" or "Comes Holy." The naming ceremony was accompanied by heartfelt songs and dances performed by Tribal leaders, creating a deeply spiritual atmosphere. During the ceremony, an altar was meticulously arranged, adorned with three buffalo robes and three buffalo skulls. A fourth buffalo skull hung from the peace pole symbolizing World Peace and Prayer Day, observed annually on June 21st. The presence of the white buffalo calf in Yellowstone National Park is an extraordinary occurrence as white buffalos are considered extremely rare in the wild. The significance of the white calf's appearance at this particular moment in history was not lost on the audience. Many were moved to tears, recognizing the profound message it carried. According to the Lakota prophecy, the birth of a white buffalo calf signifies the promise of better times ahead. However, it also serves as a warning, urging humanity to take greater responsibility in safeguarding the earth and its precious creatures. The Lakota philosophy is rooted in the story of the White Buffalo Calf Woman. In times of hardship, she appeared to teach people the importance of unity and harmony with one another and the natural world. Before departing, she prophesied her return as a four-legged white buffalo during times of polarization and violence. Tribal members believe that this prophecy serves as a call for humanity to pause and recognize the pivotal moment we find ourselves in. The climate crisis, marked by devastating fires, floods, and a growing sense of animosity, has disrupted harmony with Mother Earth. The birth of the white calf serves as a motivation for change and a realignment of values. As the ceremony concluded, attendees left with a renewed sense of purpose and a commitment to protect and preserve the earth and its inhabitants. The white buffalo calf's arrival serves as a beacon of hope, urging us to restore the delicate balance between humanity and nature. It is a reminder that by embracing unity and respect, we can forge a brighter future for generations to come.
- Maid of the Mist Sets Sail into the Future: Niagara Falls' All-Electric Boat Tour Revolution
Renowned for its up-close encounters with the awe-inspiring American, Bridal Veil, and Horseshoe Falls, the Maid of the Mist has taken a significant step towards sustainability by transitioning to an all-electric fleet. Gone are the days of noisy engines and diesel emissions. The new all-electric fleet provides a quieter and cleaner experience for both visitors and the environment. This transition aligns with New York State’s efforts to reduce carbon footprints and combat climate change. The decision to switch to an all-electric fleet was driven by the desire to preserve the natural beauty of Niagara Falls for future generations. By eliminating the emissions associated with traditional boats, the Maid of the Mist is taking a proactive approach to protect the delicate ecosystem surrounding the falls. This commitment to sustainability sets a positive example for other tourism operators worldwide. The new electric boats not only offer a more environmentally friendly experience but also enhance the overall visitor experience. With quieter engines, visitors can fully immerse themselves in the awe-inspiring sights and sounds of the falls without any distractions. The absence of engine noise allows for a more serene and peaceful journey, allowing visitors to connect with nature on a deeper level. In addition to the environmental benefits, the all-electric fleet also showcases the latest advancements in technology. These state-of-the-art boats, which were the first newly constructed all-electric passenger vessels in North America, are equipped with cutting-edge electric propulsion systems ensuring a smooth and efficient ride for passengers. The boats operate nearly silently with minimal vibration and operate exclusively from the onboard energy-stored battery system with no need for a diesel generator backup. One of the most exciting aspects of these new vessels is how quickly the 158 kWh lithium-ion battery banks recharge throughout the day in between each boat trip. Each trip consumes 38 kWh of total power and upon returning to dock is recharged to 80% state of charge for optimum efficiency and battery life. With a C2 charge rate, each battery bank can be charged from 60% to 80% in 7 minutes (which aligns with the average turnaround time while docked between trips). In 2022, the Maid of the Mist vessels were charged 6,300 times and carried 1.2 million passengers. Previous vessels would have used 23,520 gallons of diesel fuel (approx. 56 gallons per day) and emitted 258 tons of CO2. The transition to electric power demonstrates the commitment of the Maid of the Mist to embrace innovation and provide visitors with a truly unforgettable experience. The Maid of the Mist boat tours have been a staple of Niagara Falls tourism for over a century and this transition to an all-electric fleet marks a new chapter in their storied history. By embracing sustainable practices, the Maid of the Mist is not only preserving the natural wonders of Niagara Falls but also inspiring others to follow suit.

- Man Headed to State Prison in Animal Cruelty, Dog Fighting Case
A 24-year-old Cheektowaga man, James A. Jackson, has been sentenced by an Erie County Court judge following his conviction on animal cruelty charges and involvement in a dog fighting investigation. The sentencing comes as a result of a joint effort by the Erie County SPCA investigators and the Cheektowaga Police, who received an anonymous tip regarding dog fighting activities in April of 2022. Jackson has been handed a one-year sentence for his convictions in the animal cruelty case. This sentence will be served concurrently with his determinate sentence of 2 years in prison, followed by 3 years of post-release supervision for an unrelated gun charge case. The severity of the punishment reflects the seriousness of the crimes committed. The investigation led the Erie County SPCA to execute a search warrant at Jackson's residence on Andrews Avenue in the Town of Cheektowaga. During the search, investigators discovered evidence consistent with dog fighting both inside and outside the property. The SPCA rescued three live dogs from the basement, while the remains of two deceased dogs were found in the backyard. In a press release issued by the Erie County District Attorney's Office, it was revealed that Jackson admitted to training three pit bull mixed breed dogs, two males, and one female, with the intention of engaging them in animal fighting. He also intentionally deprived the dogs of food and medical treatment. On March 19, 2024, Jackson pleaded guilty to all eight counts in the indictment. The charges against Jackson included three counts of Prohibition of Animal Fighting, classified as Class "E" felonies under New York Agriculture and Markets Law. Additionally, he faced four counts of Overdriving, Torturing, and Injuring Animals, Failure to Provide Proper Sustenance, classified as Class "A" misdemeanors, and one count of Prohibition of Animal Fighting, Possession, Sale, or Making of Animal Fighting Paraphernalia, classified as a Class "B" misdemeanor. As part of the sentencing, a final 'no animal' order has been issued, prohibiting Jackson from owning or caring for any animals for the next 30 years. This measure aims to ensure the safety and well-being of animals in the community. Acting Erie County District Attorney Mike Keane commented on the case, stating, "This is a horrible case involving a defendant who tortured innocent dogs and used cruel methods to train them to become dangerous animals. This case highlights the tragedy of these underground, illegal activities." Keane emphasized the importance of addressing and eradicating such practices while acknowledging the SPCA's role in safeguarding animals and seeking justice.

- Join John Maser on WLVL 1340's Hit Morning Show 'Wake up Niagara'
THE HISTORY The very first radio broadcasting station in Lockport was born October 19, 1922. It was WMAK, one of the few radio stations in the country and was built on Mill Street by Norton Laboratories engineer I. R. Lounsberry. It operated at 360 meters and it was only on the air a few hours a week, but the powerful signal could be heard hundreds of miles away. Eventually, the studios were moved from the Mill Street location to the second floor of the former Rialto Theater which was on the southeast corner of Walnut and Pine Streets. From there, the studios ended up at Buffalo's Hotel Lafayette downtown and in 1927 the towers and transmitter were moved to Shawnee Road in the Town of Wheatfield. Later studio locations included both the Rand Building and the Liberty Bank Building in Buffalo. Then early in the 30s the Federal Communications Commission awarded the frequency to the Buffalo Evening News and WBEN went on the air. WMAK then ceased to exist. On August 14, 1940, the Corson family of Lockport, owners of the Lockport Union Sun and Journal newspaper sent a letter to the FCC requesting an FM frequency for Lockport. The OK was given the summer of 1946, and even with the aftermath of World War Il and the shortage of manpower and materials, construction began and the 320 Michigan Street studios were ready to go by October, 1948, and sign-on and full programming began on Halloween of that year. Beyond his music career, Osmond has ventured into various other entertainment fields, including TV, film, hosting, and dancing. Josh Allen, the talented quarterback for the Buffalo Bills, is not alone in his journey to success. He has three siblings who have been his teammates for life – Nicala, Jason, and Makenna. Join us and take an in-depth look at these remarkable individuals and their relationship with the NFL superstar. Born to parents Joel and LaVonne Allen, Josh is the second oldest of the four children. His sisters, Nicala and Makenna, and his brother, Jason, complete the tight-knit Allen family. In a 2017 interview with the Casper Star-Tribune, LaVonne spoke proudly about the strong bond between her children. She mentioned how they are not only siblings but also the best of friends. Nicala, Jason, and Makenna are always there to support Josh, attending his Buffalo Bills games and other sporting events he participates in. They are his biggest fans, cheering him on from the sidelines. In return, Josh shows his unwavering support for his siblings, shouting them out on social media and attending family events. Growing up in the small California town of Firebaugh, Josh and Jason were raised in a family of third-generation farmers. Their extended family owns a significant amount of farmland in the region, where they grow various crops such as cotton, wheat, grapes, melons, and pistachios. The hard work and strong work ethic instilled in Josh on the ranch played a crucial role in shaping his determination and drive to succeed in professional football. Both Josh and Jason spent their early days on the farm helping their parents with various tasks. They would clear weeds, dig ditches, set up irrigation, and even pick cotton. According to the Los Angeles Times, the brothers poured their excess energy into these farm chores. ESPN reported that they were often the two best athletes in every sport they took on whether it was baseball, basketball, football, or swimming. Their competitive nature fueled their growth and development as athletes. Football has always been a passion for Josh, and it all started in his living room. He fondly recalls watching Monday Night Football with his family, running around the living room table, and making tracks while his dad threw them the ball. Their enthusiasm sometimes led to a few dents in the walls and broken cases, but it was all part of the joy and excitement of the game. Nicala and Makenna have also played significant roles in Josh's life. Nicala is married and has started a family of her own, making Josh an uncle. She frequently shares sweet photos on Instagram, showcasing her family's support for her younger brother on the football field. Even her baby boy joins in the Buffalo Bills team spirit, dressed in red and blue. Jason, on the other hand, gave Josh a niece named Phoebe. In an interview with PEOPLE in November 2023, Josh expressed his excitement about meeting his niece during Thanksgiving that year. Although Jason didn't pursue a career in professional sports like Josh, their competitiveness as kids shaped them both. They would race to be the first to grab the Xbox controller or start shooting hoops outside. Their mom, LaVonne, described their relationship as both competitive and supportive, pushing each other to excel on and off the field. Makenna, like Nicala, is a proud sister who frequently posts Instagram tributes to Josh on game day. She proudly displays her Buffalo Bills pride and shares heartfelt captions expressing her love and support for her brother and the team. The Allen siblings are a testament to the power of family and the impact it can have on an individual's success. Their unwavering support, competitiveness, and love for one another have played a significant role in shaping Josh Allen into the exceptional athlete he is today. As Josh continues to make waves in the NFL, his siblings will undoubtedly be by his side, cheering him on every step of the way. Josh Allen's Siblings: His Teammates for Life.

- SUNY Niagara Partners with Niagara Falls School District to Offer Free College Course to Parents
SUNY Niagara is partnering with Niagara Falls City Schools for the second time to offer a free college course specifically designed for parents whose children are enrolled in the district. This initiative aims to support parents who have dreams of pursuing a college degree but face challenges such as raising children and the high cost of tuition. The course, titled English 102: Writing and Introduction to Literature, focuses on enhancing writing skills and introducing students to the study of literature. Adults enrolled in the course are considered part of SUNY Niagara and are provided with all the resources and support available to regular college students. According to Tammy Bruno, the assistant vice president of academic affairs at SUNY Niagara, adult students make up a significant portion of the undergraduate student population in the United States. Many of these adult students are also parents, which is why the schools are offering free childcare services while the course takes place. "Nearly every student enrolled in our first cohort of this program used the childcare resource," said Bruno. "They were able to bring their children with them to class, get them situated, and really focus on their coursework because they weren't worried about how they were going to meet their childcare needs." Mark Laurrie, the superintendent of Niagara Falls City School District, highlighted that one of the primary reasons for partnering with SUNY Niagara and offering this free course is to benefit the children. Laurrie explained that while the parents may be the ones attending the classes, the success of moms and dads has a positive impact on their children's learning. "Research shows that the educational achievements of a child's mother often directly correlate with the child's academic performance. We also engage fathers and even grandparents who are interested," Laurrie said. "By raising the educational level of the family, starting with the parents, we can directly improve the educational outcomes for the children we serve." Enrolling in this course is being described as a risk-free opportunity for parents to explore college education and determine if it is the right path for them. Bruno emphasized that the pressure is reduced because regardless of the outcome, there are benefits for everyone involved. "They don't have to worry about the financial burden, childcare, or transportation," Bruno explained. "Parents can fully focus on their schoolwork and decide if they are ready to take another course. For every student who took the first set of courses we offered, the answer was a resounding yes." Classes for the English 102 course will be held on Mondays from July 8th through August 29th at Bloneva Bond Primary School. Parents interested in registering for the course can call the school at (716) 278-5860. This collaborative effort between SUNY Niagara and Niagara Falls City Schools provides an invaluable opportunity for parents to pursue higher education and create a positive impact on their own lives and the lives of their children.
