- Niagara Falls – New York’s Largest Energy Producer
Yes, Niagara Falls is beautiful, but it is also one of the largest sources of hydroelectric power in the United States. This clean energy is generated by two facilities in New York State: the Robert Moses Niagara Power Plant and the Lewiston Pump Generating Plant. These plants have a combined 25 turbines spun by 748,000 gallons of water per second. In Lewiston, NY, the Niagara Power Project was a gated tunnel under the City of Niagara Falls to divert water from the Niagara River into two reservoirs, which creates power when the water is released. The facility includes two intake structures, two underground conduits, pump stations, a fore bay, the Lewiston Reservoir, the Lewiston Pump Generating Plant, the Robert Moses Niagara Power Plant, and the Niagara Switchyard. When the Niagara Power Plant produced its first power in 1961, it was the largest hydroelectric power facility in the western world. The plant currently generates more than 2.4 million kilowatts of electricity, which is the equivalent of lighting 24 million 100-watt lightbulbs. Since then, Niagara Falls has continued to be New York's largest energy producer.
- Best Views of Niagara Falls USA
Niagara Falls USA encompasses some of the best up close and personal views of the American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, and Horseshoe Falls. You can stand feet away from the brink of all three waterfalls – so close that you can feel the mist coming off each one. Like any place though, some vantage points are better than others and this article will take you through the best. Prospect Point Observation Tower – Extending out over the Niagara Gorge at 282 feet, this provides one of the most picturesque vantage points to view the American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, and Horseshoe Falls at the same time. The observation tower is located inside the Niagara Falls State Park and costs only a few dollars per person. Terrapin Point – This must-see location is found at the northwestern corner of Goat Island directly next to the Horseshoe Falls. As you stand there and take in the thunderous roar of water spilling onto the rocky pool below, you will have a front row view of the falls, a mist pool, the Canadian skyline and, of course, a rainbow. Luna Island – Located on Goat Island, Luna Island is a small island positioned between the American and Bridal Veil Falls. On both sides of the island, you can stand two feet away from the edge and watch water cascade onto the rocks below. Niagara Falls State Park – The oldest state park in America includes what many believe it to be the best view of the American Falls. The state park is open 365 days a year, so you can see how mesmerizing the American Falls is in all seasons. Maid of the Mist – The world-famous attraction thrills riders with a voyage along the American and Bridal Veil Falls before venturing into the cascading waters from the Horseshoe Falls. Cave of the Winds – Short of going over Niagara Falls in a barrel, there are fewer places closer to the action than a series of walkways below the American and Bridal Veil Falls. In fact, you can stand below the Bridal Veil Falls on the famous ‘Hurricane Deck’!

- The Only Time Niagara Falls Completely Stopped Flowing
For the one and only time in recorded history, Niagara Falls stopped flowing and went dry on March 29th, 1848. On this day, strong winds pushed ice fields in Lake Erie into motion causing millions of tons of ice to become jammed around the mouth of the Niagara River. This resulted in the channel being blocked completely and stopped all flow over the American and Horseshoe Falls for over 30 hours. Although the American Falls was intentionally stopped between June 1969 and November 1969 when the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers dammed the falls to study possible actions to remove debris at its base, the Horseshoe Falls continued to flow during this time. 1848 remains the only year that Niagara Falls (the American and Horseshoe Falls) has stopped flowing and went completely dry.
- JUST IN - Buffalo Bills Fire Offensive Coordinator Ken Dorsey
The Buffalo Bills announced on Tuesday, November 14th that Offensive Coordinator Ken Dorsey was fired. "We have relieved Offensive Coordinator Ken Dorsey of his duties," said a statement from the team. "Quarterbacks Coach Joe Brady will serve as interim Offensive Coordinator."
- Buffalo Bills Lose to the Denver Broncos - Fall Further Out of Playoff Picture
The Buffalo Bills lost 24-22 on Monday Night Football to the Denver Broncos following a game-winning field goal. The Bills marched down the field to take a 1 point lead with under two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. However, the Bills' defense could not hold the Broncos and committed a costly pass interference penalty on a 3rd and 10 which put them in field goal range. On the final kick, Broncos K Will Lutz missed his first attempt. However, the Bills had twelve players on defense which nullified the miss. On his second try, Lutz put it between the uprights sending the Broncos to a win and the Bills to a second straight loss. The Bills are 5-5, two games out of a playoff spot, two games behind the Dolphins for the AFC East, and have the 3rd toughest schedule the remainder of the year.
- Buffalo Bills Trail Denver Broncos 15-8 at Half - Josh Allen 2 INTs
The Buffalo Bills find themselves in a familiar place again - down at halftime. The Denver Broncos hold a 15-8 lead in large part to their defense forcing three turnovers - two INTs by Bills QB Josh Allen and a fumble by RB James Cook. The one bright spot for the Bills was a 22-yard TD catch by rookie Dalton Kincaid. A sloppy first half by the Bills, coupled with the Broncos scoring points off of turnovers, has put the team in a precarious position. The Broncos get the ball first after halftime with a 7 point lead.
- Niagara Falls is the Fastest Waterfall in the World
Although Niagara Falls is not the highest waterfall in the world, it does rank as the fastest. At the upper rapids just above the falls speeds can reach in excess of 40 miles (68 kilometers) per hour. However, the fastest speeds occur at the falls themselves where a combination of volume and height result in speeds in excess of 65 MPH. The fastest speed ever recorded was 68 MPH.
- Niagara Means 'Thundering Noise' - Explore its Native Iroquoian Roots
Over 20 million people travel to Niagara Falls each year to experience its grandeur and natural beauty. A question many of them ask is where the name Niagara came from. The name 'Niagara' derives from an Iroquoian word Onguiaahra which means "a thundering noise." This word was anglicized (made English) by missionaries who visited the region hundreds of years ago. In fact, the term 'Niagara' first appeared on maps as early as 1641. However, there are some scholars who believe the name Niagara derived from another native word meaning "thundering waters." Regardless, the theme is the same - Niagara means something powerful.
- Niagara Falls, NY Awarded Asphalt Art Grant from Bloomberg Philanthropies
Niagara Falls is one of 26 U.S. cities across the country to be selected to receive a $25,000 Asphalt Art Grant from Bloomberg Philanthropies. The grant application was submitted by the Niagara Falls National Heritage Area (NFNHA) in partnership with the City of Niagara Falls. It aims to infuse impactful community-driven advocacy and development in the North End of Niagara Falls by enhancing safety for pedestrians and cyclists, improving public spaces, and installing vibrant crosswalk murals at intersections. “We are so excited for this opportunity in the North End community, a neighborhood with a legacy of creativity, resilience and courage. It’s an extension of our ongoing work with the community to bring attention to the City’s Underground Railroad history and local stories”, says Ally Spongr, Interim Director of the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center, an organization working in partnership with the NFNHA and NF Murals. “This is excellent news. In our predominantly Black community here in the North End of Niagara Falls, active community participation in these art projects have enhanced a sense of pride, ownership and has given a voice to our community’s authentic identity,” says Saladin Allah, project coordinator for the NF Murals, the public art initiative of the NFNHA. The partnership of the NFNHA and the City of Niagara Falls has pointed to three specific locations that form a triangle in the North End: three major intersections connecting high traffic areas to the widely used Legends Park recreational basketball courts, the Niagara Falls Public Library, Henry Abate Elementary School, and the Niagara Falls Transportation Authority Portage Road Transportation Center. “As Bloomberg Philanthropies points out,” says Mayor Robert Restaino of the City of Niagara Falls, “Vibrant public artwork and smarter street design can inspire residents and have tangible impacts on improving safety and the lives of our residents. These creative initiatives are important to enhance Niagara Falls, strengthen our pride, and bring enthusiasm for something better to come.” The planning for the project will begin in Fall 2021 with implementation in Spring 2022. More information on the Asphalt Art Grant from Bloomberg Philanthropies, visit link. About Niagara Falls National Heritage Area & NF Murals The Niagara Falls National Heritage Area (NFNHA) is one of 55 National Heritage Areas in the United States. Designated by the United States Congress in 2008, its mission is to preserve, protect and promote the historic, natural and cultural resources of the area stretching from Niagara Falls to Old Fort Niagara in Youngstown, New York. The NFNHA facilitates partnerships between artists, public and private organizations, and community members and stakeholders to envision and create public art, impacting the cultural landscape with pieces that reflect and honor the history and legacy of Niagara Falls. Learn more at discoverniagara.org & nfmurals.org. Bloomberg Philanthropies Asphalt Art Initiative Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Asphalt Art Initiative provides cities with grants of up to $25,000 each, as well as technical support, for projects that use art and design to improve street safety, revitalize public spaces, and engage residents of their communities. The Asphalt Art Initiative responds to the growing number of cities around the world embracing art as an effective and relatively low-cost strategy to enliven and improve safety in their streets through interventions on crosswalks, plazas, and other transportation infrastructure. It is inspired by work done to improve pedestrian safety and revitalize New York City streets during Michael R. Bloomberg’s mayoralty (2002-2013) and the work of Bloomberg Philanthropies’ pro bono consulting arm Bloomberg Associates advising cities on implementing asphalt art projects.

- Popular Fish in the Niagara Region - Lake Erie and Lake Ontario
Lake Erie and Lake Ontario - two of the five Great Lakes in North America - encompass over one hundred different fish. There is arguably no better collection of freshwater fish anywhere else in the world. Lake Erie currently has the largest population of fish throughout all of the Great Lakes. Although this is good news for locals and tourists wanting to fish, it is even better for commercial fishery where Lake Erie is one of the world's largest. In all, there are more than 130 species of fish in Lake Erie. Some of the most popular are the Walleye, Steelhead, Smallmouth Bass, Yellow Perch and Northern Pike. On the other hand (or fin), Lake Ontario is home to over 120 species of fish. Some of the most popular are the Atlantic Salmon, Bluegill Sunfish, Brook Trout, Brown Trout, Channel Catfish, Chinook Salmon, Coho SalmonLake Trout, and Largemouth Bass. Fishing season is year-round across the Great Lakes. New York, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, Ohio and Pennsylvania give regular guidance as to which fish should / should not be eaten across the Great Lakes. Happy fishing!
- Queen Elizabeth Visited Niagara Falls Before Corrination
Queen Elizabeth reigned as the British Monarch for 70 years between 1952 and 2022. A question people always ask is if she ever visited Niagara Falls as queen. Although the answer strictly speaking is no, that isn't the entire story. Princess Elizabeth visited Niagara Falls just three months before ascending to the throne on November 7th, 1951. Prince Philip and Princess Elizabeth visited the falls and then attended a National Hockey League game in Toronto between the Maple Leafs and Chicago Blackhawks. After her coronation, Queen Elizabeth came close to Niagara Falls but never reportedly came back to view the (unnoficial) seventh wonder of the world: i. Queen Elizabeth visited Hamilton, Ontario on July 2nd, 1959 ii. Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip visited St. Catherines and Niagara-on-the-Lake on June 28th, 1973
- Princess Diana, Prince William and Prince Harry's Visit to Niagara Falls
Millions of people from around the world travel to see the wonder of Niagara Falls. On October 26th, 1991, some of the most popular members of the British Royal Family came to experience it for themselves. Princess Diana of Wales, and her sons Prince William and Harry, visited Niagara Falls and took a private ride on the Maid of the Mist. A lesser known fact about their boat ride is that they were able to enjoy time away from the paparazzi after Princess Diana requested they stay back and observe from shore.
- Movie "Niagara" Starring Marilyn Monroe Filmed at Falls in 1952
Several movies have been filmed in Niagara Falls, but few are more well-known than Marilyn Monroe's "Niagara" which released in 1953. The movie is a mystery thriller about a murder plan gone awry. Rose Loomis, played by Marilyn Monroe, and her husband George, played by Joseph Cotten, are vacationing in Niagara Falls, NY when they befriend Polly and Ray Cutler, played by Jean Peters and Casey Adams, who are honeymooning. Polly suspects something is wrong between Rose and George. Her suspicions are later confirmed when she sees Rose with another man. With the influence of sex and destructiveness, things between George and Rose only get worse from there. Although the movie takes place in Niagara Falls, NY, the movie was filmed in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Marilyn Monroe stayed at the Crowne Plaza throughout filming, which which was called the General Brock Hotel at the time. The cabins featured in the movie were built specifically for filming and then removed afterward.
- Niagara Falls 'Top 2' Place to Visit in the World According to Forbes
In October, Forbes published "Bucket List Travel - The Top 20 Places to Visit in the World" based on a study by Kuoni, a Britain-based travel company. Kuoni conducted their analysis by examining Google search data for 119 bucket list locations throughout 219 countries. The top spot on the list went to the Maldives, but coming in at a close second was Niagara Falls. As Sheena Paton, Senior Program Manager at Kuoni, told Forbes, “the thundering waters at the border of Canada and the United States never fail to mesmerize visitors, providing an unforgettable bucket list experience." Niagara Falls has long been referred to as a ‘Wonder of the World’ by visitors, historians, conservationists and others for hundreds of years. The awe and wonder surrounding Niagara Falls go far beyond the staggering amount of water flowing over it, the hydroelectric power it creates, or even its scenic views. Rather, what makes Niagara Falls special is that it is a natural wonder designed and existing through the grace of a higher power. One thing is for sure - it's no surprise that Niagara Falls was named a 'top 2' place to visit in the world by Forbes!
- Rare Black Squirrels Are Everywhere at Niagara Falls State Park
From viewing the Horseshoe Falls from Terrapin Point on Goat Island, the Bridal Viel Falls from Luna Island, or the American Falls from from Prospect Point, there are unforgettable views everywhere at Niagara Falls. Not to be forgotten though are the hundreds of animals that call Niagara Falls State Park their home. In fact, there are said to be over 1,000 species in Niagara Falls / the Niagara Gorge encompassing birds, mammals, reptiles, and more! Of them all, there is hardly a more popular animal at Niagara Falls than the black squirrel. At first glance one might say the black squirrel resembles the Eastern Grey Squirrel , which would make sense as they are in fact the same species. The only difference (as you can see) is black fur caused by a genetic mutation passed from generation to generation. The black squirrel is the rarest of all squirrel species - accounting for only 1 out of every 10,000 squirrels. Despite this, there are thousands of black squirrels who call the Niagara Region home and can be seen at all the most popular tourist destinations (Niagara Falls State Park, along the Niagara Gorge, Whirlpool State Park , Devils Hole State Park , and etc.). Make sure to be on the lookout for these rare critters during your trip to Niagara Falls!
- First Death-Defying Daredevil Tightrope Walk at Niagara Falls Between U.S. and Canada
For hundreds of years, Niagara Falls has been home to daredevils and death-defying stunts. Countless people have attempted to go over Niagara Falls in a barrel, on a jet-ski, a kayak, and even without the aid of any flotation device at all. Others have even tried to cross above Niagara Falls in the air (click here for a full list of attempts). The first person to attempt tightroping across Niagara Falls was Jean Francois Gravelet, known professionally as Charles Blondin, in 1859. Blondin was a French tightrope walker and acrobat who rose to fame after his tightrope walk across the Niagara Gorge on June 30th, 1959. The location of his walk is currently where the Rainbow Bridge is, which is a few thousand feet away from the brink of Niagara Falls. In total, Blondin walked 1,100 feet. Blondin did not only walk this once, but several times afterward - and each time with a daring twist. Blindfolded, pushing a wheelbarrow, walking on stilts, in a sack, carrying a man on his back, sitting down halfway while he cooked and ate an omelette, and standing on a chair with only one of its legs balanced on the rope. It may be completely crazy to imagine, but it's true! Blondin will always be the first daredevil to complete a tightrope walk at Niagara Falls.
- Natural Wonder of the American and Horseshoe Falls has Existed for Over 12,000 Years
When considering the origin of Niagara Falls it's easy to believe that the (unofficial) seventh wonder of the world must have always existed. But the surprising truth is Niagara Falls is not that old at all. According to scholars, historians and geographers, the natural wonder of the American and Horseshoe Falls has existed for over 12,000 years, which in contrast to other landmarks across the world is fairly young. In contrast, the Giant Causeway columns in Ireland are more than 60 million years old. The first documented reference of Niagara Falls is said to have come from an account of Samuel de Champlain - a French explorer, navigator, and cartographer - in 1604. However, it is widely believed this was not a firsthand account and instead based on stories from native residents Champlain met. The first real documentation came over 70 years later in 1678 from French explorer Louis Hennepin.
- Niagara Falls is World's Second Largest Waterfall
Falling short of the Victoria Falls in Southern Africa, Niagara Falls is the second largest waterfall in the world. Niagara Falls is a collection of three waterfalls: the Bridal Veil Falls, American Falls and Horseshoe Falls. The smallest of the three waterfalls, the Bridal Veil Falls, has a crest of 56 feet wide and a direct fall of 78 feet. The American Falls reaches roughly 1,060 feet across with an average drop of 175 feet. On a per second basis, about 75,758 gallons of water go over the American Falls. Last but certainly not least is the Horseshoe Falls which is referred to as the most powerful waterfall in the entire world. The Horseshoe Falls has a drop of 175-185 feet and extends 2,600 feet across. On a per second basis, about 681,750 gallons of water go over the Horseshoe Falls.
- Niagara Falls Shaped America's Image Before the Statue of Liberty
One of the least known facts about Niagara Falls is that its beautiful landscape and raging waters acted as the symbol of America until nearly 1900. Prior to the Statue of Liberty being erected in 1886, Niagara Falls was the icon used across the world symbolizing America, freedom and opportunity. Up until that time, people had flocked to see Niagara Falls for the same reason they visit the Statue of Liberty now. Over 100 years later, Niagara Falls continues to be an American icon as the (unofficial) Seventh Wonder of the World, one of the planet's largest energy producers of hydroelectric power, and Honeymoon Capital of the World. Niagara Falls was a huge part of shaping America's image before the Statue of Liberty, and it will continue to be for many years to come.
- Bills Coach Sean McDermott Says No Change at Offensive Coordinator
During a video call with reporters on Monday, November 7th, Buffalo Bills Head Coach Sean McDermott said that no change will be made at Offensive Coordinator. Ken Dorsey is here to stay - at least for now. “I understand everyone’s frustration," said McDermott regarding the criticism of Dorsey for the past several weeks. “And we’re working extremely hard to make the adjustments we have to make. And Ken is doing the same. So I remain confident in Ken and our offensive staff, and we continue to work hard at improving and getting the results we need.”

- DARRYL TALLEY LIVE IN CUBA, NY: Fundraiser Event for Gabby Kranock Oct. 20, 2023
Buffalo Bills all-time tackle leader Darryl Talley is coming to Cuba for a fundraiser event supporting Gabby Kranock, a Cuba girl who was paralyzed by a drunk driver in 2022. Talley will meet with fans and sign autographs as part of the annual Deschfest memorial fundraiser on Oct. 20 starting at 6:30 p.m. at the Palmer Opera House. The event will also feature comedy trivia from A Couple of N3rds, music from The Chumps, and a raffle featuring thousands of dollars worth of items and gift cards donated by local businesses. Admission for the evening is $15, while autograph tickets for Talley are $20 per autograph. Children aged 12 and under will be admitted free of charge when accompanied by an adult. All presale admission tickets include a complimentary raffle sheet featuring 25 raffle tickets, giving attendees a chance to win prizes. Additional raffle ticket sheets are $15 or three sheets for $40. Those who can't stay for the entertainment and raffle but still want an autograph from Talley can join an early autograph session starting at 6:30 p.m. After being drafted by the Bills in 1983, Talley played in Buffalo for 12 seasons, including the Bills four Super Bowl appearances. Talley is the Bills all-time leader in tackles and a member of the Bills Wall of Fame. On Sept. 3, 2022, Kranock was standing in a lawn celebrating the last day of summer break before her senior year when she was hit by a drunk driver, causing her injuries. The crash also killed Kranock’s friend Kayden Belleisle, of Olean. The event's proceeds will be donated to Kranock and her family, assisting them with the expenses associated with her condition. The series of Deschfest fundraisers pay tribute to Cuba's own Zach Deschler, who passed away from brain cancer in 2016. Since 2017, Zach's friends and family have raised over $10,000 for local charities and causes in his honor. Last year’s sold out event featured WWE Hall of Famer and New York Times bestselling author Mick Foley. Previous events have featured live music and pro wrestling. Event organizer Kip Doyle, a Cuba native living in Buffalo, said every Deschfest event incorporates Deschler’s passions. The fundraiser events give Deschler’s friends and family an opportunity to celebrate his life with the greater community, he said. "Zach (Deschler) loved the Bills, so bringing a Bills legend to Cuba is a perfect fit for this year’s event. We are thrilled to have Darryl Talley at Deschfest this year to support Gabby Kranock and her family,” Doyle said. To order admission and autograph tickets, or for more information, visit Deschfest.com.
