Thunder of Niagara Cancelled for 2026, Extending Hiatus to Nine Years

Plans for the long-anticipated return of the Thunder of Niagara Air Show have been grounded once again after organizers confirmed that the event scheduled for this summer at the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station will not take place in 2026.

Officials with the 914th Air Refueling Wing announced Monday that the 2026 show has been cancelled due to operational demands tied to ongoing military missions overseas.

“Due to the allocation of resources to ongoing operations in the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the 2026 Thunder of Niagara Air Show,” the wing’s public affairs office said in an email statement.

The cancellation marks another delay for the event, which had been expected to make its long-awaited return after several years without a show in Niagara County.

Organizers had previously announced the air show would be held during Father’s Day weekend between June 20–21 at the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station. The event was expected to feature several high-profile aerial performers including the United States Air Force Thunderbirds, the Royal Canadian Air Force Snowbirds, the Air Force Academy’s Wings of Blue parachute team, and civilian performer Rick Volker.

However, officials said the operational commitments of the Air Force Reserve unit made it impossible to produce the event at the level the public has come to expect.

“This was a decision we did not take lightly. We understand the impact this has on our partners, performers, volunteers, and the Western New York Community, who have supported this event,” the statement continued.

“After reviewing the situation and the resources available to us, it became clear that we would not be able to produce an air show that meets the standard our community expects and deserves.”

The announcement comes as a disappointment for aviation fans and local organizations that had been preparing for the return of the popular event. In previous years, the Thunder of Niagara Air Show has drawn crowds estimated at around 100,000 spectators to the base and surrounding areas.

The show has a long history in Western New York but has not taken place in Niagara County since June 2018. Attempts to revive it over the years have repeatedly been interrupted. A planned show in 2020 was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic while Air Force leadership did not approve the event in 2021 leading organizers to instead hold an air show along the Buffalo waterfront that year.

When the return of the event was first announced late last year, organizers expressed excitement about bringing the show back to the base. At the time, Niagara Military Affairs Council Chairman Mike Zimmerman said the comeback would celebrate the event’s revival.

“The theme of this air show is ‘Welcome back’,” Zimmerman said in December. “It’s so exciting to have everyone back on the base.”

Despite the setback, officials say the cancellation does not mean the event has been permanently shelved. The 914th Air Refueling Wing indicated that planning is underway for a possible return in the future, though a specific timeline has not yet been announced.
