  • Ringo Starr Returning to Niagara Falls: "We'll Have a Blast Being Here"

This autumn, following rehearsals in Los Angeles and a series of spring performances, 83-year-old Ringo Starr will take the stage at the Fallsview Casino's newly constructed OLG Stage in Niagara Falls on September 22nd. According to The Beatles' former drummer, he always relishes the opportunity to gaze at the awe-inspiring falls. "The hotel there overlooks the falls perfectly. It's incredible, and you can hear it constantly," Starr shared from his home studio in Los Angeles during a global Zoom call on Wednesday afternoon. "Water has always held great significance for me. When you look at the ocean, it puts you in your place. So, we absolutely love that venue, and now you're telling me they've expanded it. Well, we're ready. We'll have a blast being there. We were there in 2012 when that guy, Nik Wallenda, walked a tightrope across the falls, and it was amazing because he did it right outside our window." For this upcoming performance, the All Starr Band will feature saxophonist Warren Ham, Edgar Winter, Steve Lukather (from Toto), Hamish Stuart (from Average White Band), Colin Hay (from Men At Work), and fellow drummer Gregg Bissonette. "At the beginning of every tour, I always say, 'I'm going to give my best for you, and I hope you'll do the same for me. Let's support each other,'" Starr explained. "And that's exactly what we do. Musically, everything falls into place naturally. I've had some band members who weren't as giving as the rest of us, but that's just how it goes sometimes." Looking sharp in his all-black attire, sporting sunglasses and a peace sign necklace, the octogenarian expressed that he's feeling well. "I take the time to take care of myself," Starr shared. "I work out, watch my diet, and I'm constantly on the go. I'm also working on a new record. I keep myself busy, so most of the time, I'm in a good state of mind."

  • Sky-High Smuggling: Drones Transport Drugs Across Niagara River, 3 Suspects Nabbed in NY

According to authorities, a smuggling operation utilized drones to transport drugs across the Niagara River from Canada into Western New York. The operation involved the use of a recently purchased $630,000 house along the river as a drop-off point. A criminal complaint, unsealed this week, reveals that one individual has already pleaded guilty, while two others are facing charges following an investigation that commenced in September 2022. U.S. Border Patrol agents tracked a drone as it embarked on an overnight journey from an affluent neighborhood on the U.S. side of the border to an area near an Ontario winery before returning to the house in Youngstown, New York. During the return trip, a package was observed hanging from the drone's chassis, as stated in a court filing. Law enforcement officers were strategically positioned and the drone eventually landed in the backyard near the suspects. Upon inspection, the package was found to contain approximately 6 1/2 pounds (3 kg) of MDMA, commonly known as ecstasy, according to investigators. A search of the house yielded numerous drones and controllers, but minimal furniture, with only mattresses on the floor, as detailed in the complaint. Data retrieved from the drones indicated that there had been five previous cross-border flights prior to the September 2022 incident. The first flight occurred in May 2022, shortly after the house was purchased under the name of one of the suspects' relatives. To give an idea of flight length, the Niagara River is about 1,800 feet (550 meters) wide in Youngstown. The complaint further reveals that two of the suspects, hailing from New York City and California, are believed to have made brief trips to Niagara Falls and Buffalo for the purpose of conducting the drone flights. The suspect from New York City appeared in U.S. District Court in Buffalo on Wednesday, facing charges of drug trafficking and conspiracy. He was subsequently released on bond. Another suspect had previously pleaded guilty in February.

  • Unplugging Niagara: Can the Flow of Horseshoe Falls Be Stopped?

Is it Possible to Stop the Flow of the Horseshoe Falls? If you've ever visited Niagara Falls, particularly the awe-inspiring Horseshoe Falls, you've undoubtedly been captivated by the immense volume and flow of water cascading down its heights every second. With approximately 600,000 gallons of water crashing down per second, it stands as the most breathtaking and forceful natural spectacles on Earth. But what if, hypothetically speaking, we wanted to temporarily halt this watery powerhouse, like turning off a giant tap? Can it be done? To answer this question, we must consider both the technical and environmental factors at play and reflect on history. Let's delve into what it would entail to block water to the Horseshoe Falls. Engineering Challenge First and foremost, we must acknowledge the enormity of the engineering task. The Horseshoe Falls spans approximately 2,600 feet in width, with an average vertical drop of 188 feet. In terms of water flow, it amounts to an average of over 75,000 gallons per second. To stop such a remarkable torrent of water we would need to construct a barrier across the entire width of the Niagara River upstream from the falls. This barrier would need to be robust enough to withstand the pressure of the halted river and effectively divert the water elsewhere. Given the complexity involved, this construction endeavor would require substantial resources, infrastructure, time, and financial investment. Additionally, there would be significant risks associated with such a colossal engineering feat. Environmental Impact On the other hand, we cannot overlook the environmental consequences. Halting the flow of the Horseshoe Falls would have profound repercussions on the local ecosystem. Fish and other aquatic species in the river rely on the continuous movement of water for their survival. Disrupting or altering this natural cycle could lead to an ecological disaster. The Falls Have Been Dammed Before It is worth noting that the idea of blocking the flow to one of the three waterfalls comprising Niagara Falls has not only been considered, but was actually done. In 1969, an initiative was undertaken by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to temporarily cease the flow of the American and Bridal Veil Falls (both smaller than the Horseshoe Falls). This effort aimed to study the geological condition of the waterfall and the effects of erosion. This controlled and temporary cessation was for two reasons: (1) scientific study and (2) refortification efforts. These efforts were made to strengthen the bedrock beneath the falls to prevent further erosion and maintain the structural integrity of the waterfall. Various methods, such as rock bolting and grouting, were employed to stabilize the bedrock and ensure the long-term preservation of the American Falls. These refortification efforts aimed to protect the natural wonder and maintain its iconic status for future generations to enjoy. In summary, while the notion of blocking the water to the Horseshoe Falls may be an intriguing thought experiment, it is highly likely to remain a hypothetical scenario. The engineering challenges, costs, and significant potential for environmental harm all serve as compelling reasons for this natural wonder to continue flowing uninterrupted, much to the delight of the millions who visit each year.

  • Niagara Falls: Where Water Creates its Own Weather

Niagara Falls is a natural wonder that captivates millions of tourists every year. Its microclimate creates a fascinating phenomenon that visitors can witness firsthand. But did you know that the weather tends to be colder near Niagara Falls? It's a fascinating detail that shapes the experience of everyone who visits. One of the primary reasons for the lower temperatures is the presence of the Niagara River that feeds all water to the falls. Bodies of water have a significant impact on local climate due to their heat capacity, which allows them to store and retain heat energy. Compared to land, water takes longer to heat up or cool down. As a result, the air surrounding the river remains cooler than the inland air because the water retains its lower temperature. Another contributing factor is the mist generated by the falls themselves. When the powerful waters of Niagara Falls crash down from great heights they create a mist that envelops the surrounding areas. This mist not only increases humidity in the vicinity but also has a cooling effect, particularly when combined with cooler air during the fall and winter seasons. The presence of nearby Lake Erie and Lake Ontario also play a role in the colder temperatures near Niagara Falls. During winter, cold dry air blows over these unfrozen lakes picking up moisture and heat. As the air rises and cools over land, it releases the accumulated moisture as snow. This phenomenon, known as the Lake Effect, leads to lower temperatures and heavy snowfall in the vicinity of Niagara Falls. Lastly, the geographical location of Niagara Falls in a lower-lying basin contributes to the cooler temperatures. The basin can trap colder air causing it to sink and making the area a few degrees colder than the surrounding higher-altitude regions. This further enhances the cool temperatures experienced around the falls. All these factors combine to create a unique microclimate around Niagara Falls resulting in cooler temperatures compared to the neighboring areas. Whether it offers a refreshing respite from the summer heat or requires visitors to bundle up during the colder months, this distinctive weather characteristic undoubtedly adds to the unforgettable experience of Niagara Falls. After all, where else can you witness the enchantment of waterfalls creating their own weather?

  • The Stranded Iron Scow of 1861: A Remarkable Tale of Survival at Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls, with its awe-inspiring power and natural beauty, has witnessed countless stories of bravery and survival. Among these tales, the remarkable incident of 1861 stands out when a large flat-bottomed boat, known as a scow, became stranded on a rock shoal just 838 meters from the brink of the Horseshoe (Canadian) Falls. Explore the harrowing experience of the occupants and the subsequent rescue mission that captivated the world. In August 1861, an iron scow (used for transportation and dredging operations) found itself in a perilous situation near the brink of the Horseshoe Falls. Gustav Lofberg and James Harris, two workers aboard the scow, were conducting dredging operations when a cable connecting the boat to its tugboat snapped, leaving them stranded. The powerful currents of the Niagara River threatened to carry them over the falls, but fate intervened as the scow became grounded on a rock shoal, just a stone's throw away from the edge. As the stranded scow teetered on the edge of disaster, Lofberg and Harris faced an uncertain fate. With the deafening roar of the falls as their constant companion, they clung to hope - both knowing that rescue was their only chance of survival. The world waited in anticipation as their story unfolded, capturing the imagination of people far and wide. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, a rescue mission was quickly organized. Captain John Harrison of the Maid of the Mist steamboat, along with a team of skilled rescuers, embarked on a daring mission to save the stranded men. Using a breeches buoy, a device consisting of a life ring and a rope, the rescuers carefully navigated the treacherous waters to reach Lofberg and Harris. With nerves of steel and unwavering determination, they successfully brought the men to safety, defying the immense power of the falls. The stranded scow and the dramatic rescue that followed became a symbol of human resilience and the indomitable spirit in the face of nature's might. The incident garnered international attention, solidifying Niagara Falls' reputation as a place of both danger and wonder. Today, the story of the stranded scow serves as a testament to the bravery of those involved and a reminder of the awe-inspiring forces at play in this natural wonder. The iron scow remains lodged atop Niagara Falls to this day - a reminder of an incident long since forgotten. The scow has moved over the last 150+ years, but it has yet to break free and find its final resting place below. Its slow descent toward the falls is in large part due to the controlled flow of water to Niagara Falls, which has been regulated by the International Joint Commission since 1910. The incident of the stranded scow prompted authorities to implement stricter safety measures and regulations at Niagara Falls. The Niagara Parks Commission, established in 1885, took on the responsibility of ensuring the safety of visitors and preserving the natural beauty of the falls. Today, visitors can experience the falls from a safe distance, with designated viewing areas and guided tours that provide a thrilling yet secure encounter with this magnificent wonder of the world.

  • The Caroline: A Fateful Journey Over Niagara Falls in 1837

Niagara Falls, with its thundering cascades and breathtaking beauty, has long been a magnet for adventurers seeking to conquer its mighty waters. Among the many tales of daring and bravery, the story of the Caroline stands out as a remarkable chapter in the history of boats going over Niagara Falls. Dive into the backstory of the Caroline, recounting its role in the Upper Canada Rebellion of 1837 and its tragic fate as it plummeted over the falls. In the early 19th century, tensions simmered between Upper Canada (now Ontario) and the British colonial government. In 1837, a rebellion erupted as Canadian rebels sought to overthrow British rule. The Caroline, a steamboat owned by American sympathizers, became embroiled in this conflict, playing a pivotal role in the transportation of supplies and arms to the rebels. On the night of December 29, 1837, British forces launched a daring raid to neutralize the Caroline, which was docked on the American side of the Niagara River. Under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Alexander McLeod, a group of British soldiers boarded a small boat and stealthily made their way to the Caroline. In a swift and audacious attack, they set the steamboat ablaze, intending to send it over the falls and sever the rebels' supply line. As the Caroline was engulfed in flames, it broke free from its moorings and began its treacherous descent towards the falls. The raging currents of the Niagara River carried the burning vessel closer to the precipice while onlookers watched in awe and horror. The boat's fate seemed sealed, destined to become a victim of the mighty falls. In a twist of fate, the Caroline lodged itself on a rock ledge just above the falls, defying the odds and sparing its occupants from a certain death. The surviving crew members, including Captain William Wells, managed to escape the doomed vessel and find refuge on the Canadian shore. Their miraculous survival became a symbol of resilience and defiance against the forces of nature. However, the Caroline was not so lucky. The steamboat shortly thereafter succumbed to the raging current and perished - its fiery flames extinguished by the water below. The Caroline affair unsurprisingly strained relations between the United States and Britain. The United States demanded retribution for the attack while Britain defended its actions as necessary for national security. The incident became a rallying cry for American nationalists and fueled anti-British sentiments. Today, the story of the Caroline serves as a reminder of the turbulent times in which it sailed and the indomitable spirit of those who dared to challenge the might of Niagara Falls. While the boat itself has long since vanished its legacy lives on, etched into the annals of history and captivating the imaginations of visitors at Niagara Falls. The Caroline's journey over Niagara Falls in 1837 remains a testament to the courage and resilience of those who navigated its treacherous waters. As visitors stand in awe of the falls today, they can reflect on the boat's fateful voyage and the indelible mark it left on the history of Niagara Falls.

  • From Betrayal to Loving Buffalo: LeSean McCoy's Journey

LeSean McCoy recently reflected on the trade that sent him to the Buffalo Bills in 2015, expressing his surprise and disappointment. The trade, orchestrated by then-Philadelphia head coach Chip Kelly, involved McCoy being traded for Kiko Alonso, a player McCoy had never heard of. The trade left McCoy questioning his worth and whether it was a reflection of his abilities as a player. “That was the first time it’s ever been basically like, yo, you’re not good enough, we don’t want you,” said McCoy. “And I was like, is it my football? . . . I led the league in rushing the year before, All-Pro, first-team, and all that. The next year I was third in rushing. He said I had a declined year. You didn’t send me to Buffalo because you thought it was the best move for your team, you sent me there to die.” Despite the initial shock, McCoy thrived in Buffalo and became a beloved figure among fans. He proved himself as one of the best running backs in the league during his four seasons with the Bills, accumulating impressive rushing yards and touchdowns. Over time, McCoy grew to appreciate Buffalo and described it as a special place. In contrast, Kelly's tenure in Philadelphia did not fare well. He was fired less than a year after trading McCoy and went on to have a mixed coaching career in the NFL and college ranks. As for Alonso, he had a decent NFL career, playing for multiple teams before retiring in 2022. Ultimately, McCoy had the last laugh. He finished his career with over 11,000 rushing yards and won back-to-back Super Bowls with the Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In 2021, he signed a one-day contract to retire with the Eagles, the team where his NFL journey began.

  • Buffalo Bills Sign Super Bowl Champion WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Buffalo Bills have signed veteran wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling to a one-year contract worth up to $4.5 million. Valdes-Scantling has experience playing with top-tier quarterbacks like Aaron Rodgers and Patrick Mahomes, and he will now have the opportunity to catch passes from Josh Allen in Buffalo. Although he hasn't put up huge fantasy football numbers, Valdes-Scantling's speed gives him the potential for explosive performances. For those who play fantasy football, his production thus far suggests that he may be more valuable in real-life football than in fantasy. Throughout his six-year NFL career, the 29-year-old has not surpassed 690 yards or six touchdowns in a single season. In the previous season, he had 21 receptions for 315 yards and one touchdown in 16 games. Valdes-Scantling will be competing with Khalil Shakir and Curtis Samuel for playing time in 2024, with second-round rookie Keon Coleman expected to be a starter.

  • Does Jared Goff's Massive Deal Put Pressure on Buffalo Bills? Will Josh Allen Seek a New Contract?

When the Buffalo Bills inked Josh Allen to a six-year, $258 million deal in 2021, it seemed like a hefty sum. However, in light of recent contracts, Allen's deal now appears to be a bargain. With an average annual salary of $43 million, Allen, an unquestioned top-3 quarterback in the NFL, is earning less than some of his counterparts who have been paid more. One such quarterback is Jared Goff of the Detroit Lions who recently secured a four-year, $212 million extension with $170 million guaranteed. Goff's contract makes him the highest-paid player in Lions history, earning $53 million per year. Could this development prompt Allen to seek a new deal? Allen has previously restructured his contract each year to create salary cap space for the Bills. Undoubtedly, he is a superior quarterback to Goff. While Goff relies on ample time and open receivers, Allen excels at making plays off-script, showcasing his versatility and skill. With the finalized extension, Allen finds himself earning less than quarterbacks like Goff, Joe Burrow, Justin Herbert, Lamar Jackson, and Jalen Hurts (and only $3 million more than Giants quarterback Daniel Jones). Allen has outperformed Goff/Herbert and has achieved more success than Jackson in the playoffs. While Hurts presents a close comparison, Allen has had consistent success since before he was in the league . As for Burrow, he is the only player who could potentially argue for a higher salary than Allen, despite concerns about his durability. Despite his preference for handling business privately, it's not far-fetched to imagine Josh Allen engaging in private conversations with the Buffalo Bills about securing a new and more lucrative contract. As a top-tier quarterback, Allen's performance on the field makes him a highly sought-after asset for most NFL teams.

  • Two Centuries of Love: Celebrating Niagara Falls as the Honeymoon Capital of the World

For over 220 years Niagara Falls has proudly held the title of 'Honeymoon Capital of the world'. The origins of which can be traced back to the early 19th century. In the summer of 1801, Joseph and Theodosia Alston embarked on their honeymoon adventure from Albany to Niagara Falls. Theodosia was the daughter of future U.S. Vice President Aaron Burr. Accompanied by a retinue of servants and a small entourage of horses, they departed on a journey that would forever be etched in their memories. As they made their way through Buffalo their anticipation grew and, finally, they arrived at the awe-inspiring natural wonder of the falls. A few years later in 1804 another notable couple chose Niagara Falls as their romantic haven. Jerome Bonaparte, brother of the renowned Napoleon Bonaparte, and his bride Elizabeth Patterson also sought the enchantment of the falls during their honeymoon getaway. Initially, honeymooning in Niagara Falls was a privilege reserved for the wealthy elite symbolizing their status and prosperity. However, the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825 brought about a significant transformation. The accessibility of the Niagara Frontier increased, allowing more people to experience the splendor of the falls. The introduction of railways further facilitated the influx of newlyweds making Niagara Falls a daily destination for couples seeking a romantic escape. The allure of Niagara Falls as a honeymoon destination quickly spread across the nation. In 1841, the song 'My Niagara Falls Honeymoon' became a sensation solidifying the falls' reputation as the ultimate romantic getaway. Today, Niagara Falls continues to captivate couples from all corners of the globe with its natual beauty and romantic ambiance. • A Daredevil's Nightmare: The Perils of the American Falls

The American Falls, second largest of the three waterfalls that make up Niagara Falls, is renowned for its breathtaking beauty and immense power. However, it is also known to be extremely dangerous, which raises the question: why do daredevils steer clear of the American Falls? One of the main factors contributing to its perilous nature is the sheer volume of water that plunges down every second. With a flow rate of approximately 150,000 gallons per second, the resulting current is incredibly strong and would pose a significant risk to any daredevil attempting to navigate it. Furthermore, the intense mist and gusts of wind generated by the cascading water create challenging conditions for visibility and stability. However, the biggest reason daredevils stay away are the abundance of jagged rocks at the base of the falls making survival almost impossible. What makes the American Falls off-limits are the presence of a substantial talus pile at its base. Over time, fallen rocks have accumulated forming a mound that would be the landing point for anyone attempting to leap over the falls. Unlike the Horseshoe Falls where the plunge would lead to deep water, jumping over the American Falls would mean landing on a heap of sharp, broken rocks. This geological feature significantly increases the risk and reduces the chances of survival (to about 0%). Due to these dangers, there have been far fewer daredevil attempts at the American Falls compared to the more famous Horseshoe Falls. In fact, such endeavors are illegal and carry severe penalties including hefty fines and potential imprisonment, serving as additional deterrents. Throughout recorded history, no one has survived intentionally or accidentally plunging over the American Falls, with only one daredevil brave enough to make the attempt. Kirk Jones, who had previously survived going over the Horseshoe Falls without protection in 2003, tried to conquer the American Falls on April 19th, 2017, using an inflatable ball. The ball could be seen spinning along the rapids in the upper river before plummeting over the falls. Tragically, Jones lost his life in the endeavor. The deadly combination of the immense force of nature, challenging geographical terrain, and strict law enforcement make the American Falls a tantalizing yet perilous spectacle, far from being a playground for daredevils.

  • Dinosaur vs. Niagara Falls: Who Reigns Supreme in Size

Niagara Falls, with its powerful Horseshoe Falls, is a breathtaking sight that attracts numerous visitors every year. This natural wonder is truly magnificent standing at an impressive height of 188 feet (57 meters) and stretching approximately 2,600 feet (790 meters) in width, almost as long as 10 Boeing 747s placed end-to-end. But have you ever wondered how this colossal waterfall compares to the size of the dinosaurs that once roamed the Earth? Were there any dinosaurs as massive as the Horseshoe Falls? Let's delve into the details. The largest dinosaurs known to science were the long-necked, long-tailed sauropods such as the Argentinosaurus, Dreadnoughtus, and Patagotitan. However, even these gigantic creatures couldn't match the size of the Horseshoe Falls. To put it into perspective, the largest dinosaur ever discovered, the Argentinosaurus, reached lengths of up to 115 feet (35 meters), which is only about one-fifth the width of the Horseshoe Falls. It is estimated to have stood at a height of around 67 feet (20.5 meters) at its tallest point, still significantly shorter than the falls. The Dreadnoughtus, another colossal dinosaur, may have been even longer than the Argentinosaurus, but it was shorter in height. It possibly measured around 85 feet (26 meters) in length and stood at a shoulder height of about 30 feet (9 meters). As for the Patagotitan, it could grow up to 121 feet (37 meters) in length and reach a height of approximately 20 feet (6 meters). Even when combining the measurements of these enormous dinosaurs, none of them could match the scale of the Horseshoe Falls. Nevertheless, their immense size offers a glimpse into the incredible diversity of life that has existed on our planet, both in the past and present. While there may not have been dinosaurs as large as the falls, these colossal creatures certainly share the same sense of majesty and wonder that Niagara Falls embodies. So as you stand in awe of the Horseshoe Falls during your visit to Niagara Falls, take a moment to imagine the colossal dinosaurs that once ruled our world. As impressive as they were, nature has its own way of surpassing even the largest dinosaurs when it comes to sheer scale and beauty.
