- Niagara Falls has Squirrels so Friendly They May Jump on You (lovingly, of course)
No vacation is complete without stories to bring back and tell family members or friends. After visiting Niagara Falls State Park , one of those tales could be about critters who call it their home. One of the most memorable things you could see during your trip to Niagara Falls are squirrels who are so friendly they come right up to you and, in some cases, try and tag along for a ride. Squirrels being so friendly with people is common at Niagara Falls State Park. One of the main reasons for this is is that they have become desensitized to humans over time in and around the State Park due to the millions of people that come every year. Essentially, the squirrels have so much human interaction their fear of humans - which most critters elsewhere would have - is greatly reduced. Another major reason for this (and probably the most meaningful one) is that squirrels across Niagara Falls State Park are fed by tourists every day which make them, as you can imagine, very happy. Below is a video from April of 2023 where a cute squirrel was caught on camera jumping on a man at Niagara Falls State Park. The man was not startled whatsoever and, as you can see, rather enjoyed the experience! Plan your trip today and capture unforgettable memories that will last a lifetime. After all, you never know what you'll see during a Niagara Falls vacation!

New York State Trooper Salvatore Mattina, a dedicated 10-year veteran of the force, has returned home after a harrowing recovery from a serious motorcycle accident that occurred on September 13th in Niagara County. While riding his state police motorcycle, Mattina was struck by a car that failed to yield resulting in severe injuries that required multiple surgeries and nearly a month of hospitalization. Despite still being unable to support his own weight on one leg, Mattina graduated from rehabilitation on Wednesday and is now continuing his recovery at home. “He just plowed through it all, like a trooper,” remarked one of his doctors, highlighting Mattina’s determination throughout his ordeal. Mattina’s injuries include a brain injury, organ damage, fractures, internal bleeding, broken bones in his face, arm, pelvis, right leg and sternum. He underwent at least three surgeries within the first ten days of his hospitalization. It took over a week for medical staff to stabilize Mattina before he could be transferred to the rehabilitation unit. Doctors have indicated that a complete recovery will take months, although this does not take into account the emotional and mental challenges that accompany such significant injuries. As Mattina exited the hospital on Wednesday morning, he was greeted with tears, smiles, and laughter from ECMC staff, fellow state troopers, family, and friends who lined the halls to celebrate his return. His daughter proudly wore her own state trooper uniform on his lap. NYS Trooper Seriously Injured in Niagara County Crash Returns Home After Surgeries

- City Council Approves Iconic 58-Storey Development in Niagara Falls
The Niagara Falls City Council (Ontario) has approved redevelopment of the historic Oakes Hotel and paved the way for a new hotel featuring two 58-storey towers. The Oakes Hotel, which has been a fixture near Horseshoe Falls since its original construction in 1797, will be demolished to make room for this iconic project proposed by Hennepin Realty Holdings Inc. and Hennepin’s View Inc.. The Oakes Hotel, initially known as the Niagara Hotel, has undergone several transformations over the centuries including a devastating fire that led to its reconstruction as the Pavilion Hotel. After operating under that name for decades, the hotel was rebuilt and reopened in 2005. The new development will redefine the skyline of Niagara Falls with its modern design and extensive amenities. The proposed hotel will include a seven-storey podium, a six-storey parking garage, commercial space, and a total height reaching 60 storeys to accommodate roof features. City officials indicated that while they cannot confirm if it will be the tallest hotel in Canada, it will certainly surpass the existing Hilton Niagara Falls which has held that title since the 1990s. The new development is expected to feature 1,140 hotel suites and 126 residential units along with multi-purpose spaces. Located at 6546 Fallsview Blvd. and 6503-6519 Stanley Ave., the project will also necessitate the demolition of the Frontier BBQ and Smokehouse restaurant. During the council meeting, a representative from the development team highlighted the potential economic benefits of the project and estimated the creation of up to 2,000 full-time and 500 part-time jobs once the hotel is completed. However, concerns were raised by council members and local residents regarding the feasibility of such a large-scale development and the risk of it remaining incomplete. Councilwoman Mona Patel expressed the need for assurances that the demolition of the Oakes Hotel would lead to the construction of the new development. City staff reassured her that there are checks and balances in place including a sunset clause that requires a site plan agreement or draft plan of condominium approval within four years with a possible two-year extension. Local residents also voiced apprehensions about the city’s history with incomplete skyscraper projects questioning whether the approval of such a large development was appropriate. In response, Rocky Vacca, representing the developers, emphasized their proven track record and cited previous successful projects in the city. Overall, Council members praised the project and recognized the bittersweet nature of replacing the historic Oakes Hotel. “It’s going to be a game changer for our city…when it’s built. It will change our skyline and the tourist industry for good,” said Councilman Patel. Coun. - Police Investigate Woman Charged with Three Murders as Serial Killer, One Victim from Niagara Falls
A 30-year-old woman from Toronto has been arrested and charged with three separate murders that occurred in Toronto, Niagara Falls, and Hamilton leading law enforcement to consider the possibility of a serial killer operating in Ontario. Sabrina Kauldhar faces charges of first and second-degree murder in connection with the deaths of three individuals over a span of just a few days. According to police, the victims include an unidentified woman in her 60s found dead in Toronto, Lance Cunningham, 47, who was killed in Niagara Falls, and Mario Bilich, 77, a retired teacher from Hamilton. Police have stated that investigators were able to link the murders after determining that Kauldhar matched the description provided in both the Niagara Falls and Hamilton cases. On September 22nd police were called to a residence in Toronto where the body of the elderly woman was discovered with visible trauma. The following day, officers responded to a disturbance at John Allan Park in Niagara Falls where they found Cunningham critically injured. Despite life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene. On September 24th, Hamilton Police received a call regarding an unresponsive male in a parking lot, later identified as Bilich. He suffered serious stab wounds and was transported to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Niagara Police Chief Bill Fordy confirmed that if Kauldhar was convicted she would fit the definition of a serial killer. He expressed relief that an arrest was made quickly given the short time frame in which the murders occurred. Investigators believe that Cunningham and Bilich were randomly attacked while the Toronto victim was known to Kauldhar. Police have not identified any connections between the victims or a clear motive for the attacks. Fordy noted that Kauldhar had previous interactions with law enforcement and was known to use public transit and taxis. More than 100 investigators are currently working on the case. - Police Seek Public Assistance Following Brutal Bar Beating
Based on independent reporting and WGRZ . The Buffalo Police Department is asking for the public's help in gathering information about a brutal assault that left a man severely injured at Talty's Tavern in South Buffalo. The incident occurred in the early hours of September 22nd and the victim's mother is calling for accountability from witnesses who failed to report the violence. Denzel McCutcheon, 27, was reportedly beaten during an altercation inside the tavern around 2am. His mother, Dedra Robinson described the horrific injuries her son sustained, stating, "They fractured his nose, and at the ER they said it was a lot of small broken bones. He has a laceration across his face that had to be sutured up. His head was so swollen on one side from the beating, and from someone stomping and kicking him in his face multiple times." Robinson expressed her frustration that no one inside the bar, including patrons and staff, called 911 during or after the assault. "The decent thing to do, the most humane thing to do, whether you were outside or inside, is just to call 911," she said. After the incident, she took it upon herself to report the assault to the police. The tavern owner, Dennis Talty, provided a different account of the events stating that while there was an argument and some pushing and shoving, the incident escalated outside the bar. "My bartenders threw all three people out that were involved, and the incident happened on the street," he said in an interview with Channel 2 News, adding that he had evidence of blood on the street to support his claim. "My only issue is that my son was left there after being stomped repeatedly multiple times, kicked in his face," said Robinson. The motive behind the attack remains unclear and the police are actively investigating the case. Police Seek Public Assistance Following Brutal Bar Beating

The announcement marks a significant step forward in revitalizing community recreational spaces. Built in 1947 as a memorial to World War II veterans, Memorial Pool was designed by Michigan engineer Wesley Bintz who was known for creating over 100 above-ground pools across the country. - Woman Charged with Parental Kidnapping After Attempting to Cross Rainbow Bridge in Niagara Falls
A California woman has been charged with international parental kidnapping after attempting to flee to Canada with her 12-year-old daughter whom she did not have legal custody of. The U.S. Attorney’s Office announced the charges on Thursday and detailed the events that led to her arrest. According to officials, 55-year-old Mei Tian took an Uber with her daughter to the Rainbow Bridge in the evening hours of September 27th intending to enter Canada. During the crossing, Tian presented a letter claiming she had permission from her husband to take her daughter out of the country. However, a Customs and Border Protection officer suspected the signature was forged and deemed the letter inauthentic. As a result, Tian and her daughter were required to re-enter the United States. Further investigation revealed that Tian had no legal right to take her daughter out of the country as a court order prohibited the girl from leaving. Records indicate that the pair had been “on the run” since August. The girl’s father is her sole custodian. The investigation uncovered that the daughter was visiting her mother and was scheduled to return to her father on August 11th. However, the mother never returned her. Authorities believe Tian was planning to take her daughter to China after arriving in Canada. Tian has been charged with international parental kidnapping and making a false statement to Customs and Border Protection officers. If convicted, she faces a maximum sentence of eight years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. Woman Charged with Parental Kidnapping After Attempting to Cross Rainbow Bridge in Niagara Falls

- The Silent War Raging Beneath Niagara Falls
Coming face-to-face with the American, Bridal Veil, or Horseshoe Falls is undoubtedly a jaw-dropping and soul-awakening experience that thrills your senses. What many do not realize is that there's an underground silent war raging beneath Niagara Falls, and it's a fascinating story waiting to be explored. From the outset, Niagara Falls appears as a place of peace and serenity. With cascading waterfalls stretching out over a horizon of glittering mist, it seems more like a place where one comes to relax and be mesmerized by nature’s spectacle. But delve a little deeper, and you will discover an enthralling side of Niagara's history. A 'Silent War' is waged beneath its serene landscapes – one that has lasted for over a century. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, industrialists had their eyes on the massive power of Niagara Falls. Companies set up their operations in the vicinity, tapping into the hydraulic power to run mills, factories, and generate electricity. The silent war beneath the surface is a tussle between industrial growth and the preservation of one of the world's most impressive natural spectacles. On the one hand, you have the 'Power Kings.' These are the industrial giants like Tesla, Westinghouse, and the Niagara Falls Power Company, who exploited the natural force of the waterfall for its potential to produce power on an incredible scale. In the peak of industrial growth, some sectors of Niagara Falls became choked with factories, tarnishing its natural beauty and pushing it on the brink of becoming another industrial area. On the other hand, we have the environmentalists, including organizations such as the Niagara Falls Preservation Society and several dedicated individuals who were alarmed by the unchecked exploitation of the waterfall. They banded together to fight against the growing threat to this unique ecological site, working tirelessly to limit industrial development and preserve Niagara's natural wonder. The birth of the conservation movement led to a large scale cleanup in the late 20th century, reversing much of the environmental damage caused. What has ensued since then is a long-standing battle. To date, the management of Niagara Falls is an intricate balancing act of leveraging the waterfall's power without losing its primal and aesthetic charm. Visit Niagara Falls, and you won't just witness a magnificent natural wonder – you'll see the result of a conflict that began centuries ago. This narrative adds a thrilling edge to the spectacular scenes you witness at Niagara Falls. The next time you gaze upon the rushing waters and the ethereal mists, know that there's a whole other world - and war - being fought beneath the surface.

- Prosecution Says Asha's Cow Sanctuary Trial Cannot Move Forward, Judge Bars Crucial Evidence
Press release from Niagara County District Attorney's Office On the day before the trial in this case was set to begin, the Court issued a decision barring any witness from testifying about the cows that were the subject of the charged larceny. The Court determined that no witness could testify about seeing the cows, what happened concerning the cows, or indeed mention the cows at all. The court based this ruling on a determination that the New York State Police should have kept the animals in police custody upon seizing them from the defendant, instead of returning them to their owner, in the event that the defendant someday in the future wanted to inspect them. Police departments do not maintain stables to house livestock, nor is there any requirement in the law that they do so. Neither is there any requirement in law that police refrain from returning stolen animals to their owner. If this were the case of a family pet or companion animal being stolen, I think the owner and public would be quite surprised to find out that the police have to keep that animal as evidence and can’t return it to its home. Again, there is no requirement in the law that police do so. The future inspection of the animals would not have had any bearing on this case, nor was the defense prejudiced by not being able to inspect the cows at some future date. Even if this were a legitimate issue, the remedy fashioned by the court, to bar all testimony about the cows, was not the proper one under our law. Nevertheless, that was the Court’s decision yesterday afternoon. We obviously cannot go forward with a trial in which no witness is allowed to talk about the subject matter of the charged crimes. This case has garnered an extreme amount of attention and has been the subject of considerable misinformation and spin. The trial would have been the occasion for the simple and straightforward facts to be brought forth. Unfortunately that will now not happen. - Prosecutors Reduce Assault Charge Against High School Teen who Stabbed Student in Neck
Prosecutors have announced a reduction in the charges against a 15-year-old Buffalo teenager accused of stabbing a fellow McKinley High School student on September 9th. Initially charged with first-degree assault, the teen now faces a second-degree assault charge. The decision to lower the charge was made by the Erie County District Attorney's Office. Kait Munro, the DA's public information officer, stated that the "serious physical injury element of the charge ... could not be met." This change in the charge has significant implications for the teen's legal status. With the reduction in charges, the teenager is no longer classified as a juvenile offender which would have resulted in his case being heard in the Youth Part of Erie County Court. Instead, he is now considered a juvenile delinquent and the case has been moved to Family Court where he already has another open case. Due to the age of the victim, their name has not been released to the public. Prosecutors Reduce Assault Charge Against High School Teen who Stabbed Student in Neck

But how did you just get a slap on the hand with that?” Niagara County Sheriff Michael Filicetti addressed the charges in an interview with News 4 WIVB, explaining that the second-degree assault charge was based on the seriousness of Gregory Moore's injuries and the fact that he is expected to recover. The new law will take effect in about a month, enabling licensed hunters to pursue deer and bear with rifles throughout the county with the exception of the cities of Lockport, North Tonawanda, and Niagara Falls. The legislation, known as Senate Bill S.8382B, addresses a long-standing restriction in Niagara County, which was one of only a few counties in New York State where rifle hunting was prohibited. State Senator Rob Ortt expressed gratitude for the bill's passage, stating, “I thank the governor for signing this important bill allowing sportsmen to take big game by rifle. County residents requested their elected representatives to get this done, and I’m proud to say we delivered.” The bill amends existing Environmental Conservation Law permitting rifle hunting for big game between November 15th and December 7th. Assemblyman Angelo Morinello emphasized the importance of the legislation, noting that it not only expands hunting opportunities for residents but also has the potential to attract more sport hunting and fishing tourism to the area. Niagara County Legislator Shawn Foti highlighted the support from local gun owners, stating, “Our Niagara County Gun Owners' Rights Advisory was a huge proponent of this bill because it expands the hunting experience in our community and brings our regulations in line with the vast majority of counties in the state, including our neighbors in Orleans and Genesee.” The bill went into effect immediately upon the governor's signature and amends existing conservation laws at no cost to taxpayers. - The Lesser-known Stories and Legends of Niagara Falls
Niagara Falls is often synonymous with awe-inspiring natural beauty and breath-taking views, yet behind the iconic roaring cascades and scenic landscapes there are countless lesser-known stories and legends waiting to be explored. 1. Maid of the Mist: Perhaps one of the most enduring tales is that of the Maid of the Mist. A fearsome serpent once resided in a limestone cave in the Niagara gorge, causing widespread sickness in a local Indigenous tribe by poisoning the river's water. A brave woman from the tribe undertook a risky mission to ask for the assistance of Hino, Chief of the Thunderbeings, who lived behind the waterfall. He saved her from drowning, and persuaded by her pleas (and smitten by her beauty), Hino confronted the serpent. The beast's defeat led to the creation of the horseshoe shape in the rapids and a devastating rockslide, which prompted the Thunderbeings to relocate to Sky World. The woman and Hino had a son, part human and part Thunderbeing, who was eventually sent to Sky World due to his overwhelming power. A prophecy says that one day, he will return to Niagara Falls.
