  • Niagara Parks Police Officer Cleared in E-Bike Collision Incident

A Niagara Parks Police officer has been cleared of any wrongdoing following a collision with an e-bike that occurred in Niagara Falls this past summer resulting in serious injuries to the rider. The decision, released this week by Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) director Joseph Martino, determined that the incident was primarily caused by the e-bike rider's failure to yield to right-of-way traffic. The collision took place on July 28th at around 10:40pm. The officer was driving north on Stanley Avenue when the e-bike, ridden by a 21-year-old man with a male passenger, was traveling east on Kitchener Street. According to the SIU report, the e-bike crossed Stanley Avenue to reach Kitchener Street. Both the cyclist and his passenger were transported to the hospital following the incident. While the passenger sustained minor injuries, the rider suffered a fractured right leg. In his decision, Martino emphasized that the evidence indicated the officer had the right of way and was operating the cruiser within the legal speed limit of 50 km/h. He noted that it was the responsibility of the e-bike rider to ensure it was safe to cross the intersection. “The complainant was obliged to only proceed through the intersection when it was safe to do so and to yield to traffic with the right-of-way,” Martino stated. “His failure to yield to the (cruiser) which was proceeding lawfully at safe speeds northbound in the curb lane, caused the collision.” Niagara Parks Police Officer Cleared in E-Bike Collision Incident

  • Niagara Falls' John Cooper Jr. Named Red Cross Military Hero of the Year for Service to Homeless Veterans

U.S. Army veteran John Cooper Jr. from Niagara Falls, NY, has been awarded the title of Military Hero of the Year by the Red Cross of Western New York in recognition of his dedicated service to his country and his commitment to assisting the homeless veteran community in Niagara Falls. Cooper served as a sniper section leader in the United States Army Infantry, specifically in the 25th Infantry and 10th Mountain Divisions, completing a combat tour in Afghanistan. After six years of military service, Cooper left the Army in 2021 and began his journey in seminary while engaging in military ministry in Watertown, NY, with aspirations of becoming an Army chaplain. He and his family later returned to his hometown of Niagara Falls where Cooper took on the role of case manager at the Niagara Gospel Mission, a Christian recovery center and homeless shelter, and eventually rose to the position of executive director. At the Niagara Gospel Mission, Cooper oversees the “Recon Program,” which supports men facing homelessness and struggles with addiction. The program offers biblical counseling, classes, food, shelter, and clothing, while also encouraging clients to participate in chores that equip them with skills for the tourism industry in Niagara Falls. The program emphasizes reconciliation, helping clients mend broken relationships and seek spiritual healing. “Our main focus is on rebuilding relationships, which can significantly aid in their recovery from addiction,” Cooper explained. Through his work at the Niagara Gospel Mission, Cooper recognized the significant number of veterans in need within the community—approximately 30 percent of the men in the program are veterans. This realization reinforced his belief that his family’s return to Niagara Falls was divinely orchestrated. “Having experienced housing loss myself, I saw firsthand how many veterans lacked the family support I had. We could have easily found ourselves on the streets,” he shared. Cooper transformed an unused room in the Niagara Gospel Mission into a dedicated space for homeless veterans and initially provided eight emergency beds for veterans referred by hospitals or Veterans Affairs (VA). The facility has since expanded to include seven transitional housing rooms for veterans who are employed but struggling to find permanent housing. In an effort to further support veterans, Cooper is launching “Redeploy,” a new program specifically designed for veterans that will provide additional PTSD and trauma counseling with a strong emphasis on the Gospel. “We believe that while providing food, clothing, and shelter is important, it’s essential to also offer spiritual guidance. Without the Gospel, it’s merely a more comfortable path to despair,” he stated. Cooper was honored with the Military Hero of the Year award during the Red Cross of Western New York’s Real Heroes Celebration on October 25th. “I am truly humbled to receive this recognition for the work God is doing through the Niagara Gospel Mission,” he remarked. “My commitment to serving my community led me to the battlefield in Afghanistan, and now that I’m home, I’m dedicated to fighting for the souls of the people here.” He credits his dedicated team at the Niagara Gospel Mission for their significant contributions to helping homeless veterans and emphasizes that all achievements are ultimately "for the glory of God." Despite Niagara Falls being a popular tourist destination, Cooper describes the area as “very dark and depressed,” highlighting the urgent need for spiritual renewal. “We firmly believe that the Gospel can transform not only individual lives but also the entire community. Our mission is to rebuild the city by rebuilding lives,” he concluded. Niagara Falls' John Cooper Jr. Named Red Cross Military Hero of the Year for Service to Homeless Veterans

The Ontario government has officially greenlit the Niagara Parks Commission's plan to transform the historic Toronto Power Generating Station into a luxurious five-star boutique hotel, situated near the iconic Niagara Falls. The project is set to be fully funded by a $200 million investment from Society Developments in partnership with Pearle Hospitality. After remaining vacant for 50 years, the historic hydroelectric power generating station will undergo a complete transformation. The revamped site will feature a range of attractions, including a theater, multiple restaurants, and activities such as a free museum, an art gallery, and public viewing areas that offer stunning vistas of the falls. The Niagara Parks Commission received formal approval for the project through an Order-in-Council signed on November 7th. The release noted that all due diligence requirements (public consultations and the creation of a strategic conservation plan) were successfully completed this fall. The Niagara Parks Commission will retain ownership of the property while Pearle Hospitality will become the commission's latest tenant. Pearle Hospitality is known for its transformation of historic properties into premier hospitality venues across Ontario, including the well-regarded Ancaster Mill located in the Niagara Escarpment. • Smallest Asteroid Ever Measured Explodes Over Niagara Falls

In a rare astronomical event, a diminutive asteroid named 2022 WJ1 was discovered just hours before it exploded in a brilliant green fireball above Niagara Falls on November 19th, 2022. Measuring only about 20 inches in diameter, it's now recognized the smallest space rock ever properly measured, according to a recent study published in The Planetary Science Journal. The asteroid, roughly the size of an average domestic cat, entered Earth's atmosphere where it disintegrated due to intense friction with the air. The explosion created a spectacular flash of green light that illuminated the skies over Niagara Falls (New York/USA and Ontario/Canada) and was visible to residents in nearby regions New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Maryland. Witnesses reported a loud sonic boom accompanying the event which lasted approximately 10 seconds. Astronomers from the Catalina Sky Survey in Arizona first detected 2022 WJ1 just three hours prior to its atmospheric entry. Their observation allowed for precise predictions regarding the asteroid's trajectory and enabled monitoring equipment to capture the event in real-time. Researchers utilized data on the asteroid's brightness collected from both the Lowell Observatory and Western University's camera to conclude that 2022 WJ1 measured between 16 to 24 inches wide. This was a remarkable finding in asteroid research as smaller space rocks often go undetected as they enter Earth's atmosphere until it's too late to measure them. While larger "potentially hazardous" asteroids are routinely monitored, the detection of smaller asteroids like 2022 WJ1 remains a rare occurrence. This event was only the sixth time astronomers have spotted an asteroid before it impacted Earth. The ability to detect and analyze such small asteroids is becoming increasingly important as astronomers have recorded a total of 10 early identified impactors, including three in 2024 alone. Notable recent events include an asteroid explosion above Berlin in January and a fireball over the Philippines in September. • Lenient Sentence for Driver who Ran Over 11-year-old Devastates Family, Outrages District Attorney

Niagara County District Attorney Brian Seaman announced on Wednesday, November 27th that Juajhane Y. Cox, 25, of Niagara Falls, was sentenced to just six months in the Niagara County Jail followed by five years of probation for her role in a tragic vehicular assault that left an 11-year-old girl with permanent, life-altering injuries. The sentence was handed down by County Court Judge John Ottaviano. Cox had previously pleaded guilty to Vehicular Assault in the 2nd Degree after running over Nevaeh Quarantillo while driving under the influence of marijuana. The incident occurred as Nevaeh was riding her bicycle on Ferry Avenue resulting in severe injuries that have drastically changed her life. DA Seaman expressed his disappointment with the sentence, stating, “The law only allowed a maximum of 1 1/3 to 4 years in prison in this case despite the fact that the 11-year-old victim will spend the rest of her life under constant care for the brain injuries and other horrific injuries she suffered.” The judge's decision to allow Cox to remain free until after the holiday season has further fueled concerns about the message being sent. Seaman noted, “The family of the victim left court today feeling that justice was not served. No message was sent to the public regarding the dangers of driving while under the influence of marijuana.” The collision left Nevaeh pinned under Cox's vehicle for nearly ten minutes during which time she was deprived of oxygen, leading to a coma that lasted over five months at Oishei Children’s Hospital. Despite the grim prognosis, Nevaeh has shown remarkable progress which has been documented by her family on a Facebook page titled "Nevaeh’s Prayer Book." She is now off a ventilator and breathing independently, a feat that doctors initially deemed unlikely. Seaman extended his sympathies to Nevaeh and her family, stating, “Unfortunately, the young girl who was struck by the defendant sustained horrible injuries that she and her family will live with for the rest of her life.” Lenient Sentence for Driver who Ran Over 11-year-old Devastates Family, Outrages District Attorney

Press Release from CBP U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Port of Entry seized a firearm in a commercial vehicle that was encountered at the Lewiston Bridge border crossing.   Yesterday, CBP officers encountered a commercial truck operated by a 62-year-old United States citizen. The driver was attempting to travel to Michigan with a commercial shipment and followed his GPS device inadvertently to the Canadian border but lacked paperwork to travel through Canada. The driver was denied entry into Canada and returned to the United States where upon initial examination he declared a firearm and was subsequently escorted for a secondary examination. During the secondary examination, officers located the Hi-Point C9 semi-automatic 9mm pistol along with forty rounds of 9mm ammunition. It was determined that the driver, who currently resides in the state of Louisiana, unlawfully possessed the firearm due to prior felony convictions  prohibiting  possession of firearms.   “Our CBP Officers maintain their vigilance while screening travelers entering the United States,” said Area Port Director Gaetano Cordone. “Together with our State and Local partners, we were successful in arresting this felon and removing a firearm off our streets.”   The driver was taken into custody and subsequently processed by CBP officers. • Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station Fire Department Saves Downed Firefighter

On September 21st, 2024, a heroic rescue unfolded in Wheatfield when the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station Fire Department’s Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) was called to action during a structure fire involving the Frontier Volunteer Fire Department. The situation escalated when a MAYDAY call was issued for a firefighter who had gone down inside the burning building. The RIT, specifically trained for such emergencies, quickly arrived on the scene. Just four minutes after arriving, the call went out about the downed fireman. The team mobilized, locating the downed firefighter and executing a swift extraction from the hazardous environment. Lt. Mike Siejka, a member of the RIT, emphasized the team's critical role in such situations. “The Rapid Intervention Team has a specific purpose to set stage near a burning structure and help downed firefighters while other companies are fighting the fires. Our job is to do exactly what we executed that day,” he explained. During the recovery operation, Lt. Joseph Bowman was positioned at the firefighter's head, Capt. Aaron Walker at his torso, and Firefighter Jared Hicks at his feet. This rescue marked a poignant moment for Hicks as it was his final shift with the fire department. “It’s like a fog. There’s so much adrenaline that hits you at one time when the chief yells that MAYDAY call,” Walker recalled. “It happened so fast, but that’s where our training comes in because the community relies on us for RIT.”   This incident was significant as it was the first time the RIT had been activated for a downed firefighter and the first MAYDAY call in Niagara County in over a decade. “It’s almost like you blackout. You don't even have to think,” Bowman said. “At that point, everything becomes second nature.” The success of the rescue was attributed to the strong camaraderie and training among the team members. “What’s so great about the crew is we’ve worked and trained together numerous times, so we know each other pretty well,” Walker noted. “We knew exactly what we were going to do and we accomplished everything flawlessly.” Lt. Siejka reflected on the evolution of mutual aid in the fire service, stating, “The first 10 years I was here we didn’t do much mutual aid at all. The way it was ran we worried about here and only here. Now, it is completely different, which is really cool and great for us and the local community.” The Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station Fire Department is committed to serving the community, not only by responding to emergencies but also by training with local fire departments. The Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station Fire Department is ready for any situation that may arise. “For us to get out of our station within 90 seconds and be on the road, that's huge for locals because they know we're coming,” Walker concluded. • Hailee Steinfeld and Josh Allen: The NFL's Underrated Power Couple Dethrones Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce

While Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce have captured the spotlight as the NFL's most talked-about couple, a quieter yet equally exciting duo is making waves in the league: Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen and actress-singer Hailee Steinfeld. Here’s why they deserve the title of the top NFL power couple: First and foremost, Josh Allen's prowess on the field cannot be overlooked. Often regarded as the second-best QB in the NFL, he consistently challenges Patrick Mahomes for the top spot. His recent victory over Mahomes only solidifies his status, especially considering the pressure of winning a Super Bowl. In contrast, while Travis Kelce enjoys his time in the limelight, Allen's focus remains on delivering results for his team. Hailee Steinfeld, while not as universally recognized as Swift, is a formidable star in her own right. With a successful career spanning music, acting, and fashion, she has carved out a niche as a social media influencer. Unlike Swift, who frequently makes headlines with her glamorous outings alongside Kelce, Steinfeld embraces a more low-key lifestyle. She has been spotted supporting Allen at events, including a teammate's gender reveal party, and consistently promotes what WNY has to offer. The contrast in their public personas is striking. Swift's every appearance is a spectacle while Steinfeld prefers to blend in at Bills games. This difference highlights a refreshing authenticity in Allen and Steinfeld's relationship as they prioritize genuine experiences over the constant need for public approval. While Travis Kelce seems eager to transition into a media superstar post-NFL, Allen appears content focusing on his role as a QB. Although he has endorsement deals, he doesn’t seem driven by the desire to chase fame. Instead, he values his downtime and a more balanced lifestyle. In a world where fame often comes with pressure and scrutiny, Allen and Steinfeld have found their rhythm. They embody a relationship that thrives on mutual support and shared values, rather than the glitz and glamour that often accompany celebrity pairings. While Swift and Kelce may dominate headlines, it’s the grounded, authentic connection between Allen and Steinfeld that resonates. For those who appreciate a more genuine approach to love and partnership, Allen and Steinfeld represent the ideal NFL couple—one that prioritizes intimacy and authenticity over fame. • Search for Bodies Slowing Down for Mother who Threw Children over Niagara Falls and then Jumped

The search for the bodies of a mother who reportedly threw her two young children over Niagara Falls and then jumped herself on October 28th is slowing down. The tragic incident occurred at Luna Island - a small island situated between the American and Bridal Veil Falls connected to Goat Island - where 33-year-old Chianti Means was with her children. According to reports, police received a call around 9pm alerting them that Means had gone over the safety guard rail at the falls with her nine-year-old son, Roman Rossman, and five-month-old daughter, Mecca Means. Trooper James O’Callaghan, a spokesperson for the New York State Park Police, confirmed that the mother’s decision to jump with her children was intentional. “They went there and they never came out,” O’Callaghan stated during a press briefing on October 30th. Witness testimonies have raised concerns about the circumstances leading up to the fall, with reports suggesting that the 9-year-old was forced to go over the edge by his mother. “It is alarming what they told us,” O’Callaghan remarked, highlighting the complexity of the situation. While the investigation is ongoing, O’Callaghan noted that determining the motivations behind such actions can be challenging. “Based on the information we have, we do know it was an intentional act, but the reason why is tougher to answer,” he said. Recovery efforts to find the bodies were extensive but have reportedly yielded no results. Search teams had been scouring the lower Niagara River for any signs of the victims deploying boats along the river and utilizing drones and helicopters to assist in the search. Volunteers had also been using binoculars to scan the shoreline. The powerful currents of the river pose a significant challenge. Bodies that go over the falls are often carried downstream with many victims washing up at the Niagara Falls Power Vista or further into Lake Ontario. Sadly, some are never found at all. The unrelenting torrent of water crashing down from the American Falls oftentimes rips apart bodies stuck in the jagged rocks below making recovery even more difficult. The most recent evidence of this is with Saniyya Dennis - a Buffalo State student who went missing in 2021 and was suspected of taking her own life at the same exact location as Means did here. There, only her head was recovered. Niagara Action wrote an in-depth article on the challenges of recovering bodies that go over the falls - particularly the American Falls shortly after the incident: https://www.niagaraaction.com/tragic-reality-of-jumping-into-niagara-falls-recovery-efforts-and-the-force-of-nature 25 to 40 bodies reportedly go over Niagara Falls each year - most without public awareness. Means' cousin, Bierra Hamilton, has given multiple interviews and revealed that Means did not end her life due to a relationship issue as some speculated online. “Understand this — postpartum [depression] is very real and needs a cure,” Hamilton stated. “Her death wasn’t over a man. My cousin was silently fighting depression alone.” Means, who worked as a domestic violence counselor and graduated from a school in Buffalo, had given birth to baby Mecca just five months prior. Hamilton described her cousin as having a “beautiful soul” who loved her children and family deeply. This heartbreaking incident echoes a similar event from February 2023 when a mother jumped holding her five-year-old son and fell approximately 90 feet into the Niagara Gorge. There, the mother did not survive while the young boy was stabilized and treated for a head injury at Oishei Children's Hospital. • Female Student Suffers as Niagara Wheatfield School District's Failure to Deal with Bullying Continues

Parents of a female student from Niagara Wheatfield reached out to Niagara Action hoping that we would bring attention to the school district's continued failure to address bullying. For those that are not familiar with Niagara Wheatfield's recent history addressing such issues, read below: 2019 Incident A cell phone video captured Niagara Wheatfield eighth grader Duane Mays Jr. being harassed by classmates who mock his shirt and use racial slurs. Mays remained calm. His parents, Duane and Quatina Mays, were outraged that their son received an in-school suspension after the incident which occurred during lunch at Edward Town Middle School. They question the lack of adult supervision during the bullying and call for improved anti-bullying programs and better monitoring in schools. The school district acknowledged the video but stated they cannot comment further due to privacy laws, leaving the Mays family dissatisfied with the response. Further, many comments made on social media surrounding the video were parents stating that bullying is common throughout the district. Attorney General Lawsuit Against Niagara Wheatfield Central School District in 2021 New York Attorney General Letitia James recently won an appeal to continue her lawsuit against the Niagara Wheatfield Central School District alleging that the district ignored abuse, harassment, and bullying within its schools. The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals reversed a previous ruling that dismissed the case for lack of standing and is allowing the lawsuit to proceed in federal court. Filed in June 2021, the lawsuit claims the district failed to provide a safe environment for students. It detailed incidents involving four students and citing over 30 other unspecified cases of sexual assault, harassment, and gender-based bullying. The appellate court's decision emphasized that the district's alleged inaction could have harmful effects on a significant portion of New York's population - leaving students feeling unprotected. The lawsuit outlines actual consequences of the district's negligence including a student's panic attack, another's years of counseling, a third student transferring to a private school, and a fourth dropping out entirely. Some contemplated suicide. One specific allegation noted that a cheerleading coach dismissed a student's absences by stating, "girls get assaulted all the time," highlighting the troubling culture within the school. Lawsuit by former student alleging school did not protect her from sexual harassment, bulling and intimidation after she was raped by a classmate A former Niagara-Wheatfield student filed a federal lawsuit against the Niagara-Wheatfield School District alleging that it failed to protect her from sexual harassment, bullying, and intimidation after she was raped by a classmate in 2018. The lawsuit claims that the victim had to confront her rapist daily and endure ongoing discrimination and harassment which led to mental health issues. Despite Elias Dowdy, the offender, being sentenced to probation and the female student having an order of protection, the school allowed him to continue attending school - further subjecting the victim to harassment. The lawsuit asserts that the district did not take meaningful action to safeguard her from future harm. Letter from parents of female student in 2024 On October 29, 2024, it came to our attention that our daughter had become the victim of cyberbullying, which then followed her into school. We immediately notified the Niagara Wheatfield school district expecting quick action to protect her. Sadly, we were very wrong. When the mother of the bully was informed, her response was dismissive: “Your daughter is going to hear worse, especially since she’s chubby.” Rather than addressing this harmful behavior, the district’s response has been disturbingly inadequate. After days of waiting, on November 1st, 2024, the district finally responded to our repeated calls for them to do something to protect our daughter. They simply decided that the two students should “stay away from each other” and that there would no further communication from the school with the bully's mother due to her “hostile nature.” Yes, they actually said that the kids staying away from each other would solve the problem - as if they weren't already told the bullying started over social media. The district's response disregards the seriousness of the bullying and has only emboldened not only her bully, but others to join in and attack our daughter. What’s worse, the bully’s TikTok account is publicly accessible and has a pinned video that directly targets our daughter. The district has seen this video, yet claims they are powerless to act. Bullying today is different from when we were kids. Back then it largely stopped when you left school, but now with social media it follows children even into their homes making it impossible to escape. Our daughter, who once loved school, now dreads attending because of this relentless harassment. We refuse to let our child become another tragic statistic of bullying-related suicide. She deserves a safe, supportive environment, and we’re determined to stand up for her and for every child facing similar challenges. We are reaching out to our community for support to hold the Niagara Wheatfield school district accountable and demand meaningful action before this situation escalates further. The family has been circulating a petition on change.org which can be found here: https://www.change.org/p/demand-stricter-anti-bullying-policies-and-accountability-in-niagara-wheatfield-schools?recruiter=894173903&recruited_by_id=2401a020-a0f8-11e8-b2c9-f3fc72c593a0&utm_source=share_petition&utm_campaign=petition_dashboard_share_modal&utm_medium=copylink . Female Student Suffers as Niagara Wheatfield School District's Failure to Deal with Bullying Continues

  • Niagara Wheatfield Student Writes to Niagara Action: 'I have never felt safe at this school'

In recent weeks, Niagara Action has posted a series of articles regarding Niagara Wheatfield Schools and their continued failure to address issues of of bullying, sexual assault and harassment. Recent problems mirror those throughout the last 5-10 years, illustrating a refusal to learn from past mistakes. The District's attitude towards these issues - ones that fundamentally go to the heart of protecting students - has resulted in being sued by the New York Attorney General. On Friday, November 15th, a female student at the school wrote the following message to Niagara Action. Although her identity is known to Niagara Action, we are not releasing that to the public. I am a student at Niagara Wheatfield High School and I'm in the senior class of 2025. The school does nothing about bullying, domestic violence, or sexual assault. I was sexually assaulted by another student and provided a restraining order. The school continued to put me in classes with said student, even when I had the restraining order. They also do nothing about bullying. I have been bullied for years on end, and one of the assistant principals at the High School proceeded to put me on a bus that all of my bullies were on. My mom took me off of that bus, but they knew I was bullied by these people and I have had to call police to my bus stop in the past. Administration refuses to do anything about bullying or sexual assault. I have never felt safe at this school. I don't feel comfortable in this school. If you would like to share your own experience with Niagara Wheatfield Schools and any of the issues raised throughout this article, please email us at niagaraaction@gmail.com . Last week, it was reported that Niagara Wheatfield High School closed 8 out of 9 male bathrooms and is requiring a police officer to escort students one at a time to use the bathroom. You can here that story here: https://www.niagaraaction.com/police-watching-niagara-wheatfield-high-school-students-go-to-the-bathroom-only-1-bathroom-for-stud . A history of major incidents can be found below: 2019 Incident A cell phone video captured Niagara Wheatfield eighth grader Duane Mays Jr. being harassed by classmates who mock his shirt and use racial slurs. The District's attitude towards these issues - ones that fundamentally go to the heart of protecting students - has resulted in being sued by the New York Attorney General. After our most recent article published on November 18th, a senior at the high school sent the following email: Regarding to what you posted recently about a student being bullied, I had a similar situation. There was a circumstance where I was in the same class as someone who was known publicly to have committed sexual assault. Being a victim of sexual assault myself, there was a lot of trauma associated with being close to this male student. I did not want to be around him. I explained to the assistant principals why it made me uncomfortable. Their solution was to shut up because it was "not important and wasn't okay talking about" because the male student had "been through enough." I don't go to them about anything that happens now because of it. I have sympathy for that other student. As a class of 2025 student myself, I've been bullied most of my time at this school. The mental and emotional abuse has been bad, but the physical abuse from bullying that I went through during 9th grade was worse.
