- 8th Graders Hailed as Heroes for Saving a Life in Niagara County
Liam Hedley and Hunter Marcello, two eighth-graders at Newfane Middle School, are being celebrated as heroes after their quick thinking saved the life of a woman and her dog in July. Their heroic deed took place at the Town of Newfane Marina. Liam and Hunter were fishing and inspecting the upcoming fireworks display at the marina when they noticed a pink kayak overturned in the water. They saw a woman waving her arms, terrified and screaming for help. The woman had a large white dog with her, which was struggling to swim towards the shore. Without hesitation, the boys sprinted to Liam's father's business, Headley Boat Company, and grabbed a dinghy to rescue the woman and her dog. It took them a few attempts, but they managed to pull the woman into the boat. According to Liam, the woman was turning blue and coughing up water when they reached her. The woman was immediately taken to the pier where an ambulance and EMTs were waiting to provide medical attention. She was subsequently transported to a hospital where she received treatment for broken ribs resulting from the multiple attempts to get her into the boat. Reflecting on the intense rescue, Liam shared that his father was visibly shaken due to the physical exertion required to pull the woman into the boat. Hunter added, "It was very nerve-wracking for all of us." Middle School Principal Keith Crombie expressed immense pride in his students' bravery, stating, "Luckily, both these students love the water and would spend morning, noon, and night there if they could. If they hadn't been there, we don't know what would have happened." Liam and Hunter will be honored for their actions during an upcoming board of education meeting. 8th-Graders Hailed as Heroes for Saving a Life in Niagara County Information from independent reporting and WGRZ

- Preservation Buffalo Niagara: 'The Turtle' Deemed Eligible for the National Register of Historic Places
PRESS RELEASE FROM PRESERVATION BUFFALO NIAGARA The Turtle (Native American Center for the Living Arts) has achieved a significant victory in its ongoing battle for preservation, receiving a Determination of Eligibility (DOE) from the Commissioner of the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. This DOE acknowledges the Turtle's cultural and historical importance, making it eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places—a milestone that recognizes its vital role in Native American history and the heritage of Niagara Falls. Despite this achievement, the fight to preserve the Turtle is far from over. Earlier this year, the Niagara Falls City Council controversially decided that the Turtle was not “historic enough” to warrant local landmark status. The DOE, granted by State Historic Preservation Officials, stands in stark contrast to the City Council’s ruling, affirming that the Turtle indeed holds significant historical value. The DOE addressed the age of the building by stating, “While planning for the project started in 1976 and it has not yet reached the 50-year mark, the building appears to be exceptionally significant for the relative rarity of its iconic zoomorphic form. The turtle holds great spiritual significance to the indigenous community, and its sitting, with its head raised to look over Niagara Falls, further connected it to this sacred location.” The DOE is an essential step, but it is not the final one. While it confirms the Turtle's eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places, the next step requires action from the building's owner to complete the formal nomination process. If successfully listed, the Turtle will gain national recognition and access to resources that could ensure its preservation for future generations. To mark this achievement and to rally support for the ongoing efforts to save the Turtle, we invite the community to join us on Friday, September 13th, at 6:00 PM at Cataract House Park, located directly across from the Turtle. The event will include a presentation on the Turtle's rich history, the significance of the DOE, and the path forward to secure its place on the National Register. This gathering is more than a celebration—it's a call to action. As we honor the Turtle’s legacy, we must also look to the future and what we can do to ensure it remains a vibrant part of our shared cultural landscape. A Niagara Falls Police Officer was working an off-duty assignment as store security for Walmart around 3pm on August 26th when asset protection alerted him that two black females were observed placing items into a large purse that was being carried throughout the store. Officers headed towards the exit closest to the grocery department which was the area both females were walking through. The two females passed all points of purchase and walked directly toward the exit doors. Upon entering the front vestibule area, asset protection identified himself and asked them to stop. - Legal Battles Jeopardize Future of North Tonawanda Pot Facility You Probably Didn't Even Know Existed
Wheatfield Gardens, a 12.5-acre hydroponic greenhouse on Shawnee Road, is currently grappling with over $3.6 million in lawsuits as the beleaguered state of New York's retail cannabis industry continues to impact cannabis farmers. The facility is facing legal action from multiple companies seeking unpaid payments and alleging mishandling of crops. In lawsuits filed in Erie and Niagara County Supreme Courts, two companies are pursuing more than $600,000 in back payments owed by Wheatfield Gardens. Additionally, the owners of the popular House of Sacci cannabis brand have filed a lawsuit against the facility, claiming mismanagement of their crops and seeking $3 million in damages. EnergyMark, a gas, electricity, and renewable energy supplier based in Williamsville is taking legal action against Wheatfield Gardens for $359,768 in unpaid energy bills and interest. The claim was filed in Erie County Supreme Court on July 10th. EnergyMark alleges that Wheatfield Gardens ceased payment for natural gas bills in October 2023 despite previously settling invoices through June 2024. The claim includes $164,400 for natural gas supplied until May and an additional $195,368 representing the financial loss incurred by EnergyMark due to the need to liquidate or sell the remaining natural gas purchased for Wheatfield Gardens until December 2026. Wheatfield Gardens is also facing a lawsuit from Cheektowaga's Lamparelli Construction claiming unpaid contracting work amounting to $302,430. Lamparelli alleges that Wheatfield Gardens ceased payment for the work in January despite having paid approximately $200,000 for a build-out project exceeding $500,000. The most significant legal challenge for Wheatfield Gardens stems from a lawsuit filed by New York Seed Laboratory, owned by Dan and Mike Casacci, renowned for their House of Sacci cannabis brand. New York Seed Laboratory alleges "fraudulent misrepresentations" by Wheatfield Gardens, its processing and extraction company TruCann, and their CEO Elfstrum. The lawsuit accuses Wheatfield Gardens of neglecting and causing harm to the cannabis crops it was contracted to grow and process. New York Seed Laboratory is seeking $1 million in compensatory damages and $2 million in punitive damages. The case was filed in Niagara County Supreme Court in August 2023. Wheatfield Gardens has denied the allegations made by New York Seed Laboratory. The accusations include inadequate staffing for plant care, failure to address equipment issues and a bug infestation, among others. Located at 7341 Shawnee Road, Wheatfield Gardens is a 550,000-square-foot hydroponic greenhouse that began growing hemp in 2018 following its legalization. In April 2022, Wheatfield Gardens obtained a license from the state Office of Cannabis Management to cultivate cannabis. Approximately 40,000 square feet of the facility is dedicated to post-harvest processing and manufacturing with the TruCann division offering cannabis processing and extraction services. As the legal battles continue, Wheatfield Gardens faces significant financial challenges amidst the struggling cannabis industry in New York. The outcome of these lawsuits will have a significant impact on the future of the facility and its operations. Based on independent reporting and the Buffalo News . - NFL Players Vote Bills' Josh Allen as 'Most Overrated' QB in the League, Named Biggest Trash Talker
In a recent survey conducted by ESPN, over 100 NFL players voted Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen as the league's "most overrated" quarterback. While Allen has been highly regarded by the Western New York faithful and NFL fans across the country, it appears that players around the NFL have a different perspective. The survey asked players six different questions about quarterbacks in the league including identifying the top three current QBs, predicting the most successful rookie signal-caller, determining the most underrated QB, identifying the biggest trash talker, and selecting the most overrated QB. Notably, Allen received the most votes for the latter category with 11 players labeling him as the most overrated. Philadelphia Eagles' Jalen Hurts and Miami Dolphins' Tua Tagovailoa tied for second place with 10 votes a piece. Interestingly, Allen also ranked fourth in the category of top current quarterbacks and claimed the top spot as biggest trash talker. According to the ESPN, one anonymous NFC West player cited Allen's high number of turnovers as a reason for considering him overrated. Last season, Allen threw a career-high 18 interceptions and fumbled the ball seven times, losing four of them. Allen has led the Bills to five consecutive postseason berths and four consecutive AFC East titles. He has recorded over 40 touchdowns in four straight seasons, an NFL record, and has received NFL MVP votes in three of those years. His dynamic playing style utilizing both his arm and legs is evident in his impressive stats from last season where he amassed 4,830 total yards and 44 total touchdowns. Allen can silence his critics this season by limiting turnovers while continuing his domination on the stat sheet. As the new NFL season approaches, all eyes will be on Josh Allen as he aims to bring a Super Bowl to Buffalo. - Niagara Falls to Extend Staircase, Add Overlook Platform for Prime View of American Falls
New York State officials announced on Tuesday, August 27th a new project that aims to enhance the visitor experience at Niagara Falls. The $9 million endeavor will extend a walkway from the Niagara Gorge to Prospect Point and include the construction of an overlook platform for prime viewing of the American Falls - just feet away from the rushing cascades. This initiative is part of the ongoing efforts by the state to upgrade the park and entice tourists to spend more time and money on the New York side of the falls. Mark Mistretta, the Niagara regional director for New York State Parks, emphasized the importance of creating venues that encourage visitors to stay longer and explore the area beyond the park itself. "We feel we're going to go a long way towards it," Mistretta stated. The expansion project, which broke ground on Tuesday, will focus on the "Crow's Nest," a set of stairs situated alongside the American Falls that allows visitors to climb halfway up the side of the falls. The upcoming enhancements will add new stairs and an overlook, connecting the Crow's Nest to Prospect Park and offering a new up-close view of the falls. Currently, visitors have to turn around at the end of the stairs, descend into the gorge, and return to the top using the Maid of the Mist elevators. However, the expansion project will allow visitors to ascend back to the top using the stairs and eliminate the need for the detour (if tourists so desire). The goal is that the project will enhance tourists' overall experience at the Niagara Falls State Park. During the busy tourist season, the extended staircase will serve as a one-way exit from the lower gorge. In the off-season, it will provide two-way access to the new overlook. State officials emphasized that this overlook platform is going to offer a view of the falls that nobody has ever had. In fact, visitors will be so close to the edge of the American Falls you will feel as if you could reach out and touch the cascading waters. "You can't, of course, but it's going to be that close, and it's going to be spectacular," said Mistretta. Construction is scheduled to commence after Labor Day and is expected to be completed in time for the 2026 season. The project is funded by State Parks capital funding, the Maid of the Mist Corp., the Niagara River Greenway, and the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund. - Sex Offender Arrested in Niagara Falls to be Extradited, Faces Solicitation Charge of 14-year-old in Kansas
In a court hearing held on Monday at Niagara County Court, 34-year-old Kyle Elder made the decision to waive his right to a full extradition hearing. Elder has agreed to be transported to the state of Kansas to face a criminal charge against him. The charge stems from his alleged solicitation of a 14-year-old girl who he met and groomed on the internet. According to court records, Elder is facing a single criminal count of solicitation for his online communication with the underage girl who resides in Kansas. The court proceedings further revealed that Elder, a registered level 3 sex offender, had previously committed sex crimes in 2012 in North Tonawanda. Law enforcement authorities took Elder into custody on Friday, August 23rd, during the execution of a search warrant at his residence on 17th Street in the City of Niagara Falls. Arresting officers included those from the Niagara Falls Police Department, Kansas Police Department, the Niagara County Sheriff's Office and the New York State Parole officers. Elder, who had been serving a 10-year prison sentence for his previous conviction, was released on 10-years post-release supervision. However, his recent arrest has raised questions as to whether he will also face a parole violation and law enforcement officials anticipate that he will face additional charges for that. - Tragic Tale Unveiled: The Disturbing Story Behind a Photo of a Couple at Niagara Falls
A seemingly innocent photo of a couple posing by the majestic Niagara Falls, specifically the Horseshoe Falls, has resurfaced online recently capturing the attention of people around the world. At first glance, it appears to be a charming snapshot of two lovebirds. However, the truth behind the image is far more unsettling. Let's rewind to August 14th, 2011, when Ayano Tokumasu, a Japanese student, visited the Canadian side of Niagara Falls with her classmates from the Hansa Language Centre in Toronto. As her friend prepared to take a picture, Tokumasu decided to push the boundaries and sat on the safety barrier believing it would make for a more captivating photo. Unbeknownst to her, surveillance footage from the nearby visitor's center would capture the tragic event that was about to unfold. The 20-year-old sat on the barrier, one leg on each side, holding an umbrella, and gazing down at the falls. Horrifyingly, when she attempted to climb back over the railing she lost her balance and slipped into the water near the edge of the Horseshoe Falls - disappearing beneath the surface. Four days later, Tokumasu's body was discovered at 10am floating on the New York side of the lower Niagara River. Niagara Parks Police Chief Doug Kane confirmed the tragic news, stating, "We have received information from the State Parks Police confirming that the found remains from yesterday are those of the missing student that fell into the river last Sunday." As the haunting photo resurfaces, it serves as a poignant reminder that although Niagara Falls is a beautiful spectacle of nature, its power is unforgiving and not to be tested.
