  • Influential North Tonawanda Businessman Receives Probation for $3 Million Tax Evasion Scheme

A North Tonawanda businessman has been sentenced to four years of probation for engaging in a tax evasion scheme that amounted to over $3 million, as announced by the U.S. Attorney's office. George Ward, 57, operated a fire protection and inspection business in Amherst from 2015 to 2020. During this period, he deliberately evaded his tax obligations by failing to file personal income tax returns and neglecting to pay income, social security, and Medicare taxes that were withheld from his employees' paychecks. As a result, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) suffered a significant tax loss of $953,793. Ward also failed to file taxes with the New York Department of Taxes and Finance, resulting in an additional loss of $165,645. In addition to these offenses, Ward further compounded his illegal activities by providing false statements to an IRS revenue officer regarding his tax filings and the status of his business. To conceal his actions, he utilized a check cashing business to process over $2 million in gross receipt checks from customers, instead of depositing them into his business' legitimate bank account. Furthermore, he deposited cash from the business into a bank account under his wife's name, further obscuring the true nature of his financial transactions. Consequently, Ward was convicted of tax evasion. As part of his sentencing, Ward has been ordered to make restitution payments totaling $2,635,542.666 to the IRS and $646,770 to the state. In addition, the terms of his probation include six months of home incarceration followed by six months of home detention. The case serves as a stark reminder that tax evasion carries severe consequences. The U.S. Attorney's office, in collaboration with the IRS, remains committed to upholding the integrity of the tax system and ensuring that individuals who engage in fraudulent activities are held accountable for their actions.

  • Jelly Roll Visits the Iconic Niagara Falls, Performs at Benefit to Advocate for Indigenous Youth

On Monday, former rapper turned country star Jelly Roll made his Canadian debut in St. Catherines, Ontario, at a benefit for the Heather Winterstein Foundation. The Heather Winterstein Foundation was established following Winterstein's passing in late 2021. Winterstein, a 24-year-old, tragically died within 48 hours of being discharged from the hospital after seeking treatment for back pain and receiving Tylenol. Francine Shimizu, Winterstein's mother, says that the foundation advocates for marginalized Indigenous youth, similar to her daughter. All proceeds from a sold-out show are being donated to the foundation. The foundation's initiatives include supporting programs that address mental health, addiction, protection against human trafficking, and providing scholarships for healthcare studies. Shimizu, who has Indigenous heritage and ties to Six Nations of the Grand River, believes that her daughter may have faced stigma and challenges in accessing healthcare due to her mental health issues, addiction, and experiences with human trafficking. Shimizu emphasized that Winterstein's struggles did not diminish her worth as a person, and the foundation serves as a means to prevent others from enduring similar hardships. After the event, Jelly Roll made the short trip to Niagara Falls, specifically the Horseshoe Falls, where he was photographed with members of law enforcement. On social media, the Niagara Parks Police Service wrote: "Never know who you will bump into! Sgt. Seaward and Cst. Campbell snapped a quick pic with the inspirational Jelly Roll at the Canadian Horseshoe Falls in Niagara Parks. The Falls were lit up in pink this week and the performer debuted in Canada with a sold out benefit concert in St. Catharines for the Heather Winterstein Foundation supporting Indigenous youth programming in Niagara!" There is no doubt that Jelly Roll's involvement in the Heather Winterstein Foundation benefit, and the money raised from it, will touch the lives of young people who need it most. Roll back into Niagara Falls anytime!

  • Man Sentenced to Life in Prison for Horrific Murder of Partner, 50 Stab Wounds Mostly to Her Head

In a shocking case that has left the Ontario community reeling, a man has been sentenced to life in prison for the brutal murder of his common-law partner. Mark Burrell, 44, was convicted of second-degree murder after fatally stabbing his partner, Amber Cobean, 30, with over 50 stab wounds, mostly to her head. The incident occurred on February 1, 2019, following an argument between the couple on their way home from a night at a Niagara Falls Casino. Described by her family as a "pillar of joy and warmth," Amber Cobean's tragic death has left a void in the lives of her loved ones. She was a loving mother to their then-seven-year-old daughter and was known for her kindness and willingness to help others. Cobean had ambitious plans to open a mobile beauty salon catering to seniors in addition to working two jobs and caring for her family. The court heard that after the brutal attack, Burrell drove to the parking lot of a retirement residence in Grimsby and called 911. Cobean was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to her injuries. During the seven-day jury trial held in June at the Superior Court of Justice in St. Catharines, Burrell was found guilty of second-degree murder. On Monday, Judge James Ramsay handed down a life sentence to Burrell with no possibility of parole for 15 years. The judge emphasized the extreme brutality of the crime, describing it as "particularly egregious." He also noted that parole eligibility does not guarantee parole considering the severity of the offense. Assistant Crown attorney Henry Limheng argued that Burrell should not be eligible for parole until after serving 25 years highlighting the particularly brutal nature of the attack. Defense lawyer Hussein Aly advocated for parole eligibility after 12 years, pointing out that Burrell had contacted emergency services after the incident and did not flee the scene. Multiple victim impact statements were submitted to the court, painting a heartbreaking picture of the loss and devastation caused by Cobean's murder. Family members described her as a loving mother, a beloved family member, and a pillar of joy and warmth. A paramedic who attended the scene also submitted a statement, emphasizing the unimaginable evil displayed in the crime. This was not Burrell's first encounter with the law. The court heard that he had a criminal record for violent crimes and had spent a significant portion of his life in jail. In 2003, Burrell was charged with first-degree murder for his involvement in a home invasion that resulted in the shooting death of a 21-year-old man. He was ultimately found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to nine years behind bars. The sentencing of Burrell has brought some closure to Cobean's family, but the pain and loss they have endured will never fully heal. The court's decision reflects the severity of the crime and the lasting impact it has had on the victim's loved ones.

  • "Slap in the Face" As Driver Received Youthful Offender Status in Fatal Crash that Killed 3 Teenagers

The families of three victims say it is a "slap in the face" after a 19-year-old driver was granted youthful offender status in her sentencing for a fatal crash that killed three teenagers. The Erie County District Attorney's Office announced on Monday, July 8th that Jayla Mueller of Colden was sentenced to 1⅓ to 4 years in jail for the incident that occurred in February 2023. The fatal crash took place on the Audubon Parkway in Amherst around 11:30pm on February 20th, 2023. Mueller lost control of her vehicle while entering the ramp onto Millersport Highway. Tragically, three passengers, identified as 18-year-old Azathiel Pabon, 19-year-old Isabella French, and 20-year-old Dakota Eldridge, lost their lives in the accident. Another 17-year-old male passenger sustained injuries. In April, Mueller pleaded guilty to three counts of second-degree manslaughter and reckless driving. During her plea, Judge Susan Eagan committed to sentencing her as a youthful offender, provided she met certain conditions, including not getting arrested, complying with the pre-sentence investigation, and appearing in court for sentencing. Mueller qualified for youthful offender status due to her age at the time of the crash. The District Attorney's office expressed opposition to Mueller being granted youthful offender status and requested the maximum sentence, which she ultimately received. The families of the victims also voiced their disagreement with the decision. Michel Colondres, Pabon's aunt, expressed her disappointment, stating, "Certain things we get caught up for, you can be 17 or 18 and they're not trying to hear that youthful offender status. So it's kind of like a little slap in the face." Although Mueller apologized in court, both the judge and the families felt that her remorse was insincere and that she had not learned from the crash. Christina Kessel, Eldridge's mother, remarked, "She apologized but went on and on about how it affected her. She was still all about [herself]." Judge Eagan expressed her hope that Mueller would serve the full four-year sentence. However, there is a possibility that she may be released early. Colondres expressed her frustration, stating, "Like the judge said: I don't think you get it. You're still going to school, you're still able to do all those things that got taken from them that second, at that time. The apology, I get it. I can sympathize for her. But it's still, just like, alright, finally, I guess." Mueller's driver's license was also revoked. The families of the victims continue to mourn the loss of their loved ones and are grappling with the outcome of the sentencing. They hope that this case serves as a reminder of the devastating consequences of reckless driving and the importance of accountability in preventing such tragedies from occurring in the future.

  • U.S. Troops from Niagara Falls Airbase Leave Niger Following Military Coup

Niagara Falls airbase troops have completed their mission in Niger and are returning home after the United States decided to pull out following a military coup. The Pentagon has announced that the final pullout of U.S. troops and most equipment will be completed in August. Last fall, members of the 107th Attack Wing of the Air National Guard at Niagara Falls airbase were deployed to Niger for a six-month mission. Their objective was to use MQ-9 Reaper drones to monitor ISIS-related terrorist groups in North Africa. The U.S. military had a security agreement with Niger's leaders to carry out this mission. However, the situation took a turn when a military coup took place in Niger last summer. The new military leaders demanded that U.S. forces at two key airbases leave the country by September. Interestingly, the new Niger government welcomed Russian mercenary forces while asking the United States to depart. This turn of events left the 107th troops feeling somewhat isolated with an extended deployment. Concerns from their families prompted U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and U.S. Representative Nick Langworthy to seek more information from the Pentagon last month. Now, the U.S. Defense Department has made the decision to withdraw from the bases in Niger. Sources have confirmed that the remaining members of the 107th are heading back to Niagara Falls. The Pentagon, which invested over $100 million in building and equipping the Niger bases, expects the final pullout and equipment removal to be completed by August. In the meantime, U.S. diplomats with the Biden Administration and military leaders are actively exploring other African nations that may be more receptive to hosting similar surveillance missions as U.S. forces leave Niger. The search for alternative locations aims to ensure the continuity of monitoring ISIS-related terrorist groups in North Africa.
