  • Attempted Kidnapping at Local Park Fails, Two Girls Outsmart Suspects

A terrifying attempted kidnapping at a local park sent shockwaves through the Western New York community over the weekend, but thanks to quick thinking and the help of vigilant neighbors tragedy was averted. Alexis Cox, a concerned mother, took to Facebook on Saturday night to share the harrowing experience her daughter and a friend encountered while walking down Harris Hill Road in Clarence. According to Cox's account, as the two girls made their way to the park, a truck suddenly pulled up behind them. To their horror, a passenger emerged from the vehicle and began chasing them. Described as a white man wearing black clothing, the assailant instilled fear in the young girls. Reacting swiftly, they sprinted across the street and sought refuge by banging on a neighbor's door. Fortunately, the City of Good Neighbors lived up to its name, as the community rallied together in response to the distress call. The New York State Police promptly arrived at the scene, providing crucial assistance. Cox expressed her gratitude, stating that the authorities were instrumental in ensuring the safety of her daughter and friend. Eyewitnesses reported that the truck involved in the incident was a 2015ish 4-door Chevy 2500 HD. The details provided by these witnesses will aid law enforcement in their investigation. Cox's full account of the incident can be read above. Regrettably, this incident is not an isolated one. Western New York has witnessed numerous abduction attempts, with many stories failing to receive the attention they deserve. It serves as a stark reminder of the importance of remaining vigilant and proactive in safeguarding our communities. In a similar incident that gained national attention in March, a woman unknowingly became the target of a kidnapper while driving from downtown Buffalo to her home in Cheektowaga. The assailant followed her, forcibly removing her from her vehicle and forcing her into his own car. Miraculously, the woman managed to escape, and the perpetrator was subsequently apprehended by law enforcement. The Clarence community is now grappling with the aftermath of this terrifying incident, but it also serves as a reminder of the resilience and unity that can be found in times of crisis. The bravery displayed by the young girls and the swift response from both neighbors and law enforcement highlight the importance of community involvement in ensuring the safety of its members. As investigations into the Clarence kidnapping attempt continue, authorities urge anyone with information related to the incident to come forward.

  • The Mysterious Green Water of Niagara Falls Explained

In the Niagara River, the waters of Niagara Falls can sometimes take on a mysteriously mesmerizing green tint, a phenomenon known as "green water." This enchanting color is a result of the water's composition, specifically the presence of dissolved minerals like limestone and calcium carbonate. These minerals have the remarkable ability to reflect sunlight, casting a greenish glow upon the water's surface. Furthermore, the presence of algae and other aquatic plants can also contribute to the verdant hue. It's worth noting that the water's color can vary, influenced by factors such as weather patterns, the time of year, and the flow of the water itself.

  • Use of Force Utilized to Subdue Large Male with Gun in Niagara Falls, Injures Officer

Niagara Falls Police were on routine patrol in the city’s south end around 12:30pm on June 5th when they observed two questionable males walking down the 700 block of Ferry Avenue. The two males were described as follows: a slim build white male carrying a paper bag with an alcoholic beverage inside and a larger male wearing a hooded sweatshirt with the hood tied tightly around his face. As officers traveled closer to them, both males looked back several times. While passing them, the larger male put his head down in an attempt to shield his face. At this point, both officers believed that the larger male was a known offender / warrant suspect and turned the patrol vehicle around. Officers exited the patrol vehicle and questioned the larger male as to his identity – he refused to provide it. The larger male tensed up, actively trying to shield his backpack from officers, and started to pull away. To identify the male, both officers grabbed the larger male by the arms as he attempted to run away. The officers then tried to escort him towards the patrol vehicle to avoid oncoming traffic, but he tried to flee again. One of the officers grabbed him by the arm and his red drawstring backpack where he felt a long metal object consistent with the same size and consistency of a long-barreled handgun or a sawed-off barred rifle. An officer tried to bear hug the larger male to gain control and bring him to the ground so he could be detained. However, he pulled away again swinging his arms to flee. He spun his body and threw the officer on top of him to the ground. As the officer hit the ground there was a loud “pop” sound and severe pain in his leg. Both officers struggled significantly to subdue the male as “he was much larger than both of us,” per the police report. As the male resisted and failed to comply with verbal commands both officers lost their body cameras and radios while attempting to detain him. The encounter and struggle occurred so quickly that neither officer was able to call for backup or activate body cameras. By the time officers activated their body cameras, the large male was in handcuffs. Use of force was utilized to subdue him. The red drawstring bag was on the ground and the barrel of a handgun was clearly sticking out of it. Officers opened the remainder of the bag and left everything in place for evidence collection. The large male was secured in the rear of a patrol vehicle while the crime scene was secured and evidence documented. While documenting the male’s injuries, he made several spontaneous statements such as “I’m really sorry man, I know you got scared dude and I’m sincerely, uh uh I couldn’t obviously tell you why I was running dude.” The male was transported to police headquarters where he was booked and processed for criminal possession of a weapon 2nd and resisting arrest. No further information is available on police report involving use of force being utilized to subdue a large male with a gun in Niagara Falls who injures an officer.

  • Border Agents Postpone Strike, Easing Travel Concerns at USA-Canada Border

Those planning to cross the USA-Canada border this weekend can breathe a sigh of relief as border agents in the Canadian Customs and Immigration Union have postponed a potential strike that could have caused significant slowdowns at international bridges (Peace Bridge, Rainbow Bridge, Lewison-Queenston Bridge). In a statement posted on Friday at the 4pm deadline, the Customs and Immigration Union announced that "all strike action by 9,000 CBSA personnel is on hold as mediation will continue until Wednesday." The union also stated that "picket lines will not be in place until further notice." The possibility of a bridge slowdown had raised concerns among travelers, but the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has assured the public that the border will remain open and safe. According to the CBSA, 90 percent of all frontline border services officers are considered essential workers. This means that even in the event of a strike, ports of entry into Canada would still be staffed. Under the Federal Public Sector Labour Relations Act, employees in essential services positions are required to provide uninterrupted border services. The CBSA emphasized that these workers cannot intentionally slow down border processing. However, while the strike action has been postponed, workers still have the option to implement work-to-rule practices, as reported by the CBC. This meticulous way of interpreting rules in the strictest fashion could potentially lead to significant delays at border crossings. It may involve increased vehicle searches and additional questioning. The CBSA has promised to closely monitor the situation. The CBC report also included a statement from the Canadian government, which expressed its willingness to make concessions but emphasized the need for movement on both sides. It is clear that negotiations and discussions will continue as both parties work towards a resolution. For now, travelers can proceed with their plans knowing that the immediate threat of a job action causing border slowdowns has been postponed. The CBSA and the Customs and Immigration Union will continue their mediation efforts in the hopes of reaching a mutually beneficial agreement by Wednesday.

  • Western New York Beaches Prepare for Busy Season, Lifeguards Needed

With summer just around the corner, beachgoers are eagerly anticipating the opportunity to cool off and enjoy the sun at the state beaches in Western New York. Andrew Chouinard, a member of the NYS Parks Safety Department, expressed excitement for a smooth summer season where visitors can have a safe and enjoyable recreational experience. Beaver Island, Woodlawn, Evangola, and Fort Niagara State Parks are among the popular destinations for swimming this summer. Park officials have noticed a consistent increase in the number of visitors to state parks each year and anticipate that this summer will be no exception. Chouinard acknowledged the growing demand for lifeguards to ensure the safety of beachgoers. The state is currently recruiting lifeguards for positions at Woodlawn and Evangola beaches. Despite the lifeguards' diligent efforts, Chouinard emphasized the importance of following rules and guidelines, particularly swimming only in designated areas. He explained that while lifeguards serve as a reliable backup, there is still a possibility of missing potential hazards. Staying within the designated swim area is crucial as going beyond the buoy line means venturing outside the safe zone. To enhance visitors' experience and help them plan their day at the parks, Chouinard recommended downloading the NYS parks app. Available for download on app stores, the app provides valuable information about the amenities available at each beach, such as food options, picnic areas, and playgrounds. Additionally, visitors can use the app to map out their hikes and gain a better understanding of what to expect during their visit. For those interested in joining the team of lifeguards at New York State Parks, more information can be found by clicking HERE. • Proposed Enormous Hotel and Residential Complex to Tower Over Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls, known for its breathtaking natural beauty and popular tourist attractions, may soon be home to a towering new landmark. Developer Hennepin Realty Holdings has recently submitted plans to the City of Niagara Falls, CANADA for an ambitious hotel project that would surpass any existing structure in the city. The proposed development entails the construction of a pair of 58-storey towers on the site currently occupied by the Oakes Hotel at 6546 Fallsview Boulevard. The Oakes Hotel, with its 21-storey tower offering stunning views of the Falls, would make way for this grand new complex. The vision for the project includes a multi-purpose complex featuring a hotel, residential units, a casino, office spaces, and banquet facilities. Additionally, a nearby surface parking lot would be transformed into a seven-storey parking garage to serve the new development. The towers, designed by the renowned architects at Alliance of Toronto, would boast a minimalist aesthetic and reach impressive heights of 210.05 meters. The proposed towers would house a total of 1,140 hotel suites and a limited collection of 126 residential units. Notable features of the plan include restaurants and gaming facilities on the second level, as well as a prominent fifth-level sky-bridge connecting the two buildings. The sixth floor of the complex would be dedicated to amenities for both hotel guests and residents, including a spa, fitness center, and pool. If the project proceeds as currently proposed, it would easily surpass the Hilton Niagara Falls North Tower as the tallest building in the city. However, it faces competition from several other mega-projects that have been in the planning stages for a longer period of time. Several major developments, already approved and awaiting construction, feature towers taller than these proposed buildings. These include a 77-storey tower planned at 5602 Robinson Street, a 72-storey tower at 6605 Stanley Avenue, a complex with towers as tall as 60 storeys at 6880 Stanley Avenue, and towers reaching 56 storeys at 5383 Robinson Street. Additionally, there are plans for 61- and 60-storey towers at 5555 River Road. The race to claim the title of Niagara Falls' tallest building is still up in the air, with these projects vying for the prestigious distinction. As the City of Niagara Falls continues to evolve and attract visitors from around the world, these ambitious developments promise to reshape the skyline and contribute to the city's growth. The proposed hotel and residential complex, with its towering presence and array of amenities, could become a new symbol of the city's progress and allure.

  • PETA Sends Earplugs to Niagara Falls Tourism Board, Demands Suspension of Fireworks

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is calling on tourism officials in Ontario to put an end to the fireworks displays at Niagara Falls. As part of their ongoing campaign, PETA recently sent a unique gift to each member of the tourism advisory board in Niagara Falls - a pair of earplugs accompanied by a note reminding them that while they can protect their ears, animals cannot escape the trauma caused by fireworks. PETA argues that the fireworks displays at Niagara Falls are harmful to wildlife and companion animals such as dogs. The animal advocacy group believes that the Falls should follow the example of many other cities and switch to visually stunning alternatives like laser shows. "PETA is calling on Niagara Falls to join the many other cities now offering breathtaking laser shows that don't literally scare animals to death," said Colleen O'Brien, Senior Vice President of PETA. Niagara Falls Tourism, Ontario's lead tourism agency, sponsors over 150 nights of fireworks displays at the Falls each year, with shows running from May to mid-October. PETA representatives emphasize that their goal is not to spoil the fun but to encourage the tourism group to consider alternative options. PETA claims that more than 71,000 people have signed a petition in support of ending fireworks displays and switching to a laser show or canceling the series altogether. PETA highlights the potential harm caused to animals during fireworks displays. Dogs and cats, in particular, have been known to exhibit extreme behavior, such as jumping fences or breaking through windows and screen doors, in an attempt to escape the noise. Additionally, wildlife can be hit by cars when they flee onto roads. PETA also points out that fireworks release toxins, including mercury, carbon monoxide, aluminum, and sulfur, which can significantly increase air pollution levels. "Blighting a natural wonder with fireworks that fill the air with toxins and traumatize wildlife, companion animals, and humans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder is indefensible," stated O'Brien. PETA has been lobbying officials in Niagara Falls, Ontario for years to end the fireworks displays. The organization has also sponsored billboard advertising near the site of the fireworks show to raise awareness about the potential harm to animals. However, Ontario officials, including Niagara Falls Tourism CEO Janice Thomson and Niagara Falls, Ontario Mayor Jim Diodati, maintain that the displays are supported by residents and enjoyed by thousands of tourists each year. Mayor Diodati has described any disruption caused by the shows as minimal. The debate between PETA and tourism officials in Ontario continues.

  • Allegations of Targeted Code Enforcement Against Black-Owned Businesses in Niagara Falls

Several black-owned businesses in Niagara Falls have come forward claiming that they have been unfairly targeted by the city's code enforcement department. According to Councilman Donta Myles and multiple business owners, they have received cease and desist notices from City Hall, with the reasons behind these actions constantly changing. Councilman Myles expressed his concerns, stating, "I feel like it's more of a vendetta." He believes that the city is using targeted code enforcement against black-owned businesses. Niagara Falls Mayor Robert Restaino and his administration has not provide a statement addressing these allegations. One of the affected business owners, C.J. Cox, is currently in the process of reopening and redeveloping Shorty's Sports Bar on Pine Avenue. Despite the business not being open yet, Cox claims that the city issued a cease and desist order based on an alleged party at the property. Cox expressed frustration, stating, "Without them doing their due diligence, without them getting their facts information straight, they just decided that they heard this information and since they heard it, they came put a cease and desist on it." To resolve the issue, Cox hired an attorney and requested evidence to support the allegations, but none could be found. It was later discovered that the alleged party took place at a different address across the street from the building. After intervention from Niagara Falls code enforcement, the cease and desist order against Cox's business was eventually removed. However, the incident has caused setbacks and concerns among Cox's investors who were disheartened by the negative attention brought upon the sports bar. Cox emphasized the impact, stating, "They drive by or they come and see that, of course that's a setback. And that hurts us." Another business affected by code enforcement actions is the Atmosphere Bar, Grill, and Lounge on Main Street. The owner, who goes by the name Matthews, claims that the city shut down the establishment due to permitting issues. Matthews stated, "We had already seen the fire department, we've already seen code enforcement. They came into the building, they did all of that." However, it was later revealed that the reason behind the cease and desist order was related to a party that Matthews was promoting at the establishment. Matthews clarified that the party never took place at Atmosphere, as the city shut down the business before it could happen. The common thread between these incidents is the involvement of alleged or upcoming party events. Councilman Myles has expressed his frustration with the lack of transparency from the code enforcement department and the difficulty in obtaining responses from city departments. He emphasized the need for fairness and transparency, stating, "If you're citing someone, you better have a picture. That's all I asked from the mayor, his administration, and anybody else in local government. Be fair to the people." But nothing has come from the Mayor's office - at least not as of the publishing of this article. As the allegations of targeted code enforcement against black-owned businesses in Niagara Falls continue to unfold, community members and local officials are calling for a thorough investigation into these claims. The affected business owners hope for a resolution that ensures fairness and equal treatment for all businesses in the city. This story was originally reported on by WGRZ Buffalo.

A former Starpoint High School student has filed a lawsuit against the district, two former students, and an assistant wrestling coach, claiming that he was subjected to inappropriate touching on school grounds. The lawsuit also alleges that the district was negligent in handling the situation. The lawsuit was filed on Monday in New York State Supreme Court in Niagara County. According to the complaint, the plaintiff accuses the students of negligently, recklessly, and inappropriately touching him on multiple occasions while on school grounds. In addition to the incidents on school property, the plaintiff alleges that another incident occurred at a structure known as "The Barn," located on Townline Road in Lockport. The Barn is owned and operated by the assistant wrestling coach who was allegedly acting in a supervisory capacity at the time of the incident. The plaintiff claims that the coach failed to properly supervise the minor children on his property. The former student asserts that the touching he experienced has caused him emotional, mental, and psychological injuries. These alleged incidents are said to have taken place during the winter 2023 season, which was subsequently shut down by the district following initial allegations of misconduct. Last fall, the district conducted a Title IX investigation which revealed substantiated allegations of sexual harassment within the wrestling team. In March 2023, harassment charges were filed against two students involved. The lawsuit seeks compensation for the plaintiff's injuries and holds the district, the former students, and the assistant wrestling coach accountable for their alleged actions and negligence. The Starpoint High School district has not yet released a statement regarding the lawsuit. As the case progresses, further updates will be provided.
