Emergency crews from the Niagara Falls Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 1729 Ferry Avenue in Niagara Falls, USA at approximately 9:55am. The resident was able to escape, but unable to retrieve his dog.  A search was conducted by Truck 1 for the missing dog, while Engine 4 battled the fire.  The fire was put out quickly, but there was a lot of smoke and water damage to the home. The 13-year-old dog named “Baby” was located inside a crate and removed from the home. She was given oxygen by the firefighters and an AMR ambulance crew member.  She was responsive and breathing and was then transported by the NFPD Animal Control Officer for treatment at the emergency Animal Hospital. “Baby” is doing well and is expected to survive. The cause of the fire and the amount of the damage is unknown at this time.

In the morning hours of January 23rd, 2024, around 2:50am, officers from the Niagara Falls Police Department responded to the 400 block of 2nd Street for a reported vehicle fire. As the officer arrived, the Niagara Falls Fire Department arrived simultaneously and discovered a Vanhool tour bus, with a Massachusetts registration, set ablaze. The Fire Department extinguished the fire and a subsequent investigation determined that the fire was caused intentionally. Niagara Falls Police has charged a 57-year-old Niagara Falls man for his involvement in the assault and robbery that took place on the morning of Friday January 19th at a gas station on Buffalo Avenue. The female clerk remains hospitalized for the injuries she sustained after being struck numerous times in the head with a hammer during the robbery. Darrion A. Cotton was taken into custody Monday afternoon by Niagara Falls Police.  Cotton has been charged with one count of Assault in the first degree and two counts of Robbery in the first degree. His bail is set at $500,000 cash or $1,000,000 bond. Cotton is scheduled to return to Niagara Falls City Court on Friday January 26th for a Preliminary Hearing. The quick arrest was the result of the diligent work of lead Detectives Kevin Henderson and Kenneth Redmond and members of the Criminal Investigation and Crime Scene Units as well as critical information developed by Patrol Officer Joshua Salada. Even with the arrest, the investigation continues and police are still asking anyone with information to contact detectives at (716) 286-4553. The Niagara Region has been put under a winter weather travel advisory by Environment Canada for Tuesday. The alert advises residents to prepare for changing and deteriorating travel conditions and urges them to delay non-essential travel until the weather improves. It also encourages them to be cautious when walking or driving in the impacted areas. The national weather organization predicts heavy snow locally with an accumulation of between five to ten centimetres, and an hourly snowfall rate of one to two centimetres. The snowfall is expected to begin in the morning and cease by evening. The warning also notes that the snow may be mixed with ice pellets at some point, and is expected to lighten into rain or drizzle later in the evening. Three individuals have lost their lives due to the severe lake-effect snow in Western New York, confirmed Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz on Wednesday. A 64-year-old male died while shoveling snow on Monday. A 41-year-old man was victim to a hit-and-run incident in Cheektowaga the same day. On Tuesday, also in Cheektowaga, a 57-year-old woman was discovered deceased next to her snow blower. According to Poloncarz, all these fatalities can be connected to the ongoing snowstorm.

Bills fans across Western New York grew uneasy on Tuesday as the NFL revealed referee assignments for the Divisional playoff games. Referee Shawn Hochuli, in his sixth season, is set to officiate the Bills-Chiefs game in Orchard Park this Sunday. Although the snow will be gone for the rescheduled game, weather will still be a factor. According to forecasts, the temperature is expected to be 16 degrees at kickoff with estimated winds of 10MPH. The math is simple - it will feel like 6 degrees outside. The temperature is expected to hover around 15-16 degrees throughout the game, but that will not change the fact that wind will make it bitter cold.

Reports from federal border patrol officials suggest an increase in illegal entries into the USA from Canada via the Niagara River. Brady Waikel, head of patrol at the U.S. Customs and Border Protection station in Niagara Falls, has spent his entire 24 year career with CBP. Working stints at both the southern and northern borders, Waikel noted that the security challenge is different in both places with the most notable difference being volume. But that doesn't mean people are not crossing from Canada. The assumption their attempt across the Niagara River would be successful might be the only motivation. "From around November, there has been a discernible surge in instances of individuals attempting to cross in small rafts and vessels," Waikel told Channel 7 WBKW News (find link to full story HERE). In most instances, according to Waikel, these are cases of human trafficking.

The weekend is set to be snowy in many parts of the region, with a lake-effect snowstorm expected to kick in on Saturday night, potentially resulting in between 1 to 2 feet of snow in WNY. Alongside the snow, intense winds are also forecasted throughout the weekend, peaking on Saturday afternoon. This is mainly due to the shifting of the lake-effect bands from north to south around three or four times, expanding the area impacted by heavy snow, according to Jon Hitchcock from the National Weather Service. A warning for the winter storm is in effect from 10 a.m. Saturday to 7 a.m. Monday for several counties, including Erie, Genesee and Wyoming, with Niagara and Orleans counties under warning until 3 p.m. Sunday. High wind warnings also began at 4 p.m. for certain regions, including southern Erie and Allegany counties. Winds of up to 60 mph are expected in these areas. Similarly, other counties, including northern Erie and Niagara, are set to experience wind speeds of 50 mph starting 7 p.m., with these warnings set to end by 4 a.m. on Sunday. Power outages are anticipated as the winds could knock down trees and power lines. High-profile vehicles may face travel difficulties, according to the weather service.

This tragedy resulted in the deaths of 10 African American individuals. Prosecutors discussed Attorney General Merrick Garland's stance with family members of the victims in a confidential gathering at the Buffalo federal courthouse on Friday. Gendron, in documents preceding the May 14, 2022 attack, acknowledged that he selected the Tops Market on Jefferson Avenue as the target due to its location in an area predominantly inhabited by Black citizens. His objective was to kill as many Black individuals as he could. To execute his act of terror, he traveled over 200 miles from his family home in Conklin, NY armed with a semi-automatic firearm and a helmet-attached camera that he used to broadcast the brutal act. Apart from the ten deaths, Gendron injured three more people inside the supermarket. Prosecutors highlighted a number of exacerbating elements in their intent to push for the death penalty, among them was Gendron's racist motives for the murders, underlining his explicit bias and detestation towards Black people. Other noted factors included: the execution and attempted execution of multiple people; targeting victims especially vulnerable due to age and weakness; comprehensive planning and forethought; posing significant death threats to others; provoking violent responses from others through his violent actions; and strategically choosing the Tops supermarket in the East Side to amplify the count of Black casualties.

Isaacs was in Miami enjoying the company of close friends for the game. According to Miami authorities, an altercation ignited outside the stadium between Isaacs, his companions, and the perpetrator. The conflict escalated, prompting the unidentified individual to alight from their car and discharge numerous shots at Isaacs, leading to his tragic death at the scene, which was confirmed around midnight. Dylan was struck by a car and thrown off his feet, according to his grieving mother Susan. He stood up and attempted to chase after the vehicle when the driver fired at him. Dylan's mother depicted Dylan as a fervent basketball player, a diehard Bills fan, but above all a person who derived great pleasure from making his family laugh. Niagara Falls Firefighter Paul Emmick is training this winter to participate in the World’s Strongest Firefighter contest, scheduled to be held between March 1st - 2nd. With a 20-year background in power lifting and strongman training, Emmick has honed his strength, which is essential in his role at the fire department. Becoming a firefighter two years ago allowed him to fulfill a personal aspiration of assisting those in need. This passion to make a difference was ignited following his brother's death from a drug overdose in 2015. Contestants in the World's Strongest Firefighter event must demonstrate strength by lifting 250 pound kegs and sand bags above their heads. Good luck, Paul!!

Allen achieved his ninth career game with at least 300 passing yards and 50 rushing yards, a record-breaking accomplishment for an NFL quarterback. Previously, Allen and the iconic Steve Young were tied at eight games for the record. Against Miami, Allen's impressive stats included 359 passing yards and 67 rushing yards. Allen didn't stop there. He also had at least two touchdowns in 16 consecutive games, which ties the second-longest streak of this kind NFL history. Throughout this season, Allen's 44 total touchdowns (comprising 29 passing and 15 rushing) was the most of all quarterbacks in the NFL. Dak Prescott of the Dallas team trailed with 38. This was the second-highest season total for Allen, with his highest being 45 in 2020 and 42 in both 2021 and 2022.
