On Saturday, February 17th, tragedy struck when two individuals from Rochester lost their lives during the course of a stolen vehicle incident. This fatal episode transpired around 2 p.m. in the Town of Lockport, initiating in a business parking lot on Chestnut Ridge Road. Here, a deputy from the Niagara County Sheriff's Office endeavored to pull over the vehicle, identified as stolen from Rochester by a patrol car's license plate reader. However, the driver of the Subaru opted to flee. Officials from the sheriff's department noted that the deputy gave chase briefly, but had to reduce their speed as the suspect's vehicle accelerated and started ignoring traffic signals. In an interview with Channel 4 News, Sheriff Michael Filicetti stated, "Our patrol unit had to decrease its pursuit due to the excessive speeds." On Thursday, February 15th, 2024, Niagara Falls Police responded to Gill Creek Park on Niagara Street after a reported criminal mischief. Upon arriving at the park, police met with a Niagara Falls Parks Department Foreman who stated that he found the newly constructed bathrooms vandalized: glass blocks located on the north and south side of the building were damaged and there were dents on all doors. The estimated damage is $800 ($400 for the windows and $400 for the doors).

Upon arrival, police spoke with the victim who stated that he was advised by a neighbor that a truck picked up his red Taurus and drove away. The victim's brother recently died and all of his belongings, in addition to the house he lived in, were passed down to him. He believes a jealous friend of his brother's took the vehicle. An investigation is continuing.

Niagara Falls Police responded to the 3900 block of Ferry Avenue after reports of menacing with a pistol. According to reports, the complainant stated that he was driving and came to a stop at a traffic light. At this time, an SUV pulled up next to him with a male driver who flashed a dark-colored pistol. The male driver then fled. The complainant, alarmed by the incident, called law enforcement.

On Thursday, February 15, 2024, the Niagara Falls Police Department Narcotics Intelligence Division conducted a Search Warrant and drug raid at 1516 22nd Street. A woman is pursuing legal action against the Buffalo Bills for injuries sustained during their January 15th game at Highmark Stadium, allegedly caused by snow and exuberant touchdown celebration. The New York State Supreme Court received court filings on Friday detailing the woman's allegations, but did not provide information about the nature of her injuries. As per the legal filing, the woman was in the north end zone's middle section, second row, when a fourth-quarter touchdown sparked wild celebration from fans and players. The suit alleges that due to high-packed snow and the leaping of players into the stand, the woman fell forward onto the seats in front of her. The plaintiff claims the Bills acted negligently, carelessly, and recklessly, leading to her injuries and associated damages. Prior to the January 15 game when the Bills clinched their Wild Card victory against the Steelers, the stadium was dealing with over three feet of snow due to days of lake effect weather. Hundreds of fans were paid by the Bills to help clear the snow-filled stands in the days preceding the event.

Niagara Falls Police responded to the 7-Eleven on the 9100 block of Niagara Falls Boulevard around 4:30am on Friday, February 9th after reports of a robbery. According to the store clerk, a male approached the counter with his hood pulled right to his face and stated, “give me all the money.” The clerk, responded, “are you serious,” to which the male stated, “give me all the money, don’t make me take my gun out!” The store clerk then gave the male all cash in the register, at which point he fled the store. Officers canvassed the area with negative results. An investigation is continuing at this time.

Sheriff Michael J. Filicetti announces that Niagara County law enforcement agencies will participate in a special effort to bring awareness to the dangers of impaired driving during Stop-DWI campaign. In a combined effort to stop impaired driving, prevent injuries and save lives, law enforcement officers across New York State will take to the roads. The statewide STOP-DWI High Visibility Engagement Campaign efforts start on Friday, February 9th and will end on Sunday, February 11th. The Niagara County Sheriff's Office, as well as law enforcement agencies across Niagara County, will be out in force in this coordinated effort to reduce the number of impaired driving-related injuries and death. The STOP-DWI Super Bowl High Visibility Engagement Campaign is one of many statewide enforcement initiatives promoted by STOP-DWI New York and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee. The Statewide STOP-DWI High Visibility Engagement Campaign also targets Halloween, Thanksgiving, Holiday Season, St. Patrick's Day, Memorial Day Weekend, July 4th weekend, and Labor Day. Additionally, there will concentrated efforts on April 20th and July 10th. During these times, the focus of our community engagement will be drug impaired driving.

On Friday, February 9th at 7:55am police responded to the 509 block of Memorial Parkway in Niagara Falls for a 41-year-old male that sustained a stab wound to his upper body. He was then transported to ECMC for treatment. Currently, there is no information on his condition. The investigation is ongoing. In 1837, an entrepreneur named William Boss Tweed saw potential in the immense power of Niagara Falls and began constructing a network of tunnels beneath the falls with the intention of harnessing the fall's power. These tunnels, according to local tales, were soon developed into fully-fledged underground dwellings - the lost underwater city of Niagara. Unfortunately, these grand plans did not work out as Boss Tweed had hoped. Reports say that the ambitious entrepreneur fell into bankruptcy and fled, leaving his underwater city behind. This resulted in rumors that the unfinished network of tunnels had turned into a ghost city beneath the waters of the fall. Today, tourists can catch a glimpse of these tales' possible remnants when taking the popular Behind the Falls tour. As visitors traverse the pathways and observe the rushing water, they may spot traces of the old tunnel system and perhaps, imagine the lost city that once might have existed. Whether or not an entire city lies beneath the iconic Niagara Falls remains shrouded in mystery, but the intriguing history of the lost underwater city only adds to the allure of the region. Digging deeper into the Niagara's history reveals so much more than the bright lights of the casinos and the roar of the falls. The next time you're exploring the scenic area, be sure to let your imagination roam freely as you ponder on the existence of a city lost in the depth of Niagara's turbulent waters. Guest view by Roger Trevino, Executive Vice President of Niagara Falls Redevelopment: Unfortunately, the Niagara Gazette's article on Friday regarding the Niagara Falls Historic Preservation Commission supporting efforts to designate the Turtle building as an historic landmark leaves out some important facts. First, while the Turtle building is approximately 42 years old, it was only in operation as the Native American Center for the Living Arts for less than a dozen of those years. It failed because there was no ability to make the facility financially viable. It then sat off the tax rolls for a number of years, until the City of Niagara Falls facilitated its sale and asked NFR to buy it. Your article doesn’t mention that, at 67,000 square feet, the Turtle building is just too big to support the kind of cultural center some preservationists desire. Other reporting has indicated that a building that size should be designed to accommodate 6,700 people, yet the Turtle can seat less than 1/10 of that. The article also didn’t mention that NFR bought the property for $1 million: $100,000 per year for ten years. Thanks to NFR efforts, the property was, and remains, back on city tax rolls. Since purchasing the property, NFR has paid more than $1.3 million in taxes to the city, county and school district – in addition to the original purchase price. The article only cites two public announcements, but NFR has made numerous efforts over the years to develop the site. Indeed, NFR spent considerable expense and several years attempting to establish a Smithsonian-affiliated museum at the site. These efforts included hiring a museum consultant and other professionals and touring the site with representatives of the US Department of the Interior. In the end, NFR couldn’t find any financially viable Native American group with an interest in moving this project forward. Other efforts included outreach to indigenous communities as far away as Mongolia. More recently, NFR attempted to attract a hotel development to the site, but since the property had been downzoned in the years since NFR took over the building, the City wouldn’t grant a variance back to the original height limit in order to get the project done. Never in any of these discussions was the issue of historic significance of the Turtle structure raised. We have always been open to working with the indigenous community in Niagara Falls on cultural preservation efforts and remain so. Yet no financially viable group has ever stepped forward with a serious proposal for the successful operation of the Turtle facility in any way. Moreover, we note that museums across the country are moving away from the display of native artifacts and returning these artifacts to the tribal lands in response to new federal regulations. Most recently, in fact the American Museum of Natural History in New York closed its Native American exhibits for this reason. In the end, we do not believe that out of town, non-native preservationists should be dictating what structures in Niagara Falls warrant historic designation—nor what structures are historically significant to Native Americans who live in Niagara Falls. If a building so wrong in so many ways is landmarked for such wrong reasons, it is the taxpayers of Niagara Falls who will ultimately suffer. ROGER TREVINO Niagara Falls Redevelopment

Prince emerged victorious and bagged $65,698 worth of cash and prizes, which included a holiday trip to Spain and Portugal. As a winner, Prince is slated to reappear on the show Friday, February 9th to participate in the NFL Superfan Tournament finals. Should she emerge victorious, she stands to win additional cash, along with a grand prize of a VIP Super Bowl LVIII experience in Las Vegas. The city government of Niagara Falls, USA, is set to record a fourth consecutive year of budget surpluses. City Controller Daniel Morello told members of the City Council at a recent meeting that the city’s primary revenue sources saw about a 7% increase in 2023 from 2022. The city’s share of county sales tax and HRU (hotel, restaurant, utility) sales tax revenue saw an approximate increase of $2.9 million from the projected budget. Although these revenue figures are not yet audited and might change slightly, Morello anticipates a budget surplus for 2023.

Six applicants from Niagara County have been awarded a portion of the $15 million distributed by Empire State Development earlier this week. The grants, totaling around $1.5 million, were distributed to 19 projects across New York State on Monday as part of the 13th round of the Regional Economic Development Council initiative. The successful applicants from Niagara County included the City of North Tonawanda, which received $750,000 for refurbishments at Memorial Pool in Payne Park; Radio Niagara, the yet-to-be-built entertainment center by TM Montante, awarded $400,000; and Artpark, granted $150,000 for an artistic light display to attract tourism during its low season. Other recipients were Old Fort Niagara, awarded $50,000 for advertising; the Aquarium of Niagara, allocated $100,000 for promoting its forthcoming Great Lakes 360 expansion; and Becker Family Farms, given $99,000 for a promotional campaign showcasing agricultural experiences and large events. Funding for these projects was allocated from the ESD Grant Funds, Market New York, and the Environmental Protection Fund programs. Radio Niagara, Artpark, and the Aquarium of Niagara were flagged as priority projects. In addition to these awards, Niagara County has been a beneficiary of several ESD grants over recent months, which were given to support projects such as feasibility studies for the Weatherbest Strip redevelopment; new storage tanks for Vizcarra Vineyards; facility renovations at Heart, Love, and Soul; a STEAM Center at the Challenger Learning Center of Orleans, Niagara, and Erie Counties; waterfont revitalization in the Village of Wilson; improvements to the Canal Dock in Middleport Village; a new boat launch and fishing pier at Mayor's Park in North Tonawanda; and a wind turbine assembly facility for Siva Powers America in Lockport.
