  • Ex-New York State Trooper Admits to Orchestrating His Own Shooting

A former New York State Trooper has admitted to staging his own shooting in a dramatic scheme that sparked a massive manhunt across Long Island in late 2023. Thomas Mascia, once a trusted member of the New York State Police, pleaded guilty Wednesday to multiple charges connected to the false report, including official misconduct, evidence tampering, and filing falsified records. The now-disgraced officer agreed to serve six months in jail, followed by five years of probation with continued mental health treatment. He will also be required to repay $289,000 to cover the extensive overtime and resources spent on the three-day search for a suspect who never existed. Mascia’s sentencing is scheduled for August 20th in Nassau County Court. According to prosecutors, the 34-year-old from West Hempstead deliberately shot himself in the leg in a nearby park on October 30th, 2023, and concocted an elaborate story, claiming a stranger had opened fire on him from a parked vehicle on the Southern State Parkway, not far from his home. He alleged the shooter was a “dark-skinned man” who sped away in a car with temporary New Jersey plates, triggering an intense, multi-agency investigation. Investigators later uncovered that Mascia had fabricated the entire scenario. They say he hid the weapon used in the self-inflicted shooting, drove to the highway, and radioed for help. His actions set off panic and an urgent manhunt that would waste hundreds of man-hours. Mascia, who joined the force in 2019, was suspended without pay following the incident and eventually resigned. His defense attorney, Jeffrey Lichtman, has previously said Mascia had been struggling with long-term mental health issues. In a related development, Mascia’s parents, Dorothy and Thomas Mascia Sr., were also scheduled to enter guilty pleas Wednesday on firearms-related charges, although specific details about their involvement have not been released. Mascia had previously attempted to change his plea earlier this month, but proceedings were temporarily delayed when he told the court he was mentally unwell. • Inmate Sentenced Under New State Law for Threatening Judge

A Buffalo man currently incarcerated at the Erie County Correctional Facility has received additional prison time for sending a threatening letter to a local judge, marking the first conviction in Erie County under a recently enacted state law. Yasir Creach, 44, was sentenced Tuesday by Erie County Court Judge Sheila A. DiTullio to 18 months to 3 years in state prison. The sentence follows Creach’s conviction for aggravated harassment of a judge, a Class E felony under New York Penal Law 240.33. According to Erie County District Attorney Michael J. Keane, the charge stems from a letter Creach sent on February 24th to a Cheektowaga Town Court justice. At the time, Creach was serving a 90-day sentence in the county facility following a conviction for attempted petit larceny, a misdemeanor offense to which he pleaded guilty on February 6th. The threatening letter was determined to be a deliberate effort to harass and intimidate the judge, placing both the justice and their family in fear for their safety. Creach formally pleaded guilty to the harassment charge on April 8th. In addition to the prison sentence, a final order of protection was issued in favor of the judge. Creach becomes the first individual in Erie County to be convicted under Penal Law 240.33, a statute enacted on July 19th, 2024, as part of a broader legislative push to protect members of the judiciary. The law targets those who knowingly engage in threatening behavior toward judges or their immediate families, with the intent to harass or cause fear of harm. DA Keane praised the Cheektowaga Police Department for their swift and thorough investigation that led to the successful prosecution. The case was handled by Assistant District Attorney Megan E. • Niagara Falls Residents Receiving New, Larger Garbage Bins as Part of New Contract with Casella Waste Management

Niagara Falls officials have approved a five-year extension with Casella Waste Management, doubling the length of the city’s existing garbage and recycling collection agreement and securing a major equipment upgrade for residents. As part of the revised arrangement, Casella will invest approximately $1.2 million this year to supply 18,000 brand-new, 96-gallon blue garbage totes to residents. These larger containers will replace the aging, smaller models currently used throughout the city, which are nearing the end of their lifespan according to Mayor Robert Restaino. The contract, originally set to expire in April 2029, will now run through April 2034. No changes were made to the contract’s terms, conditions, or service standards as part of the extension. Under the deal, Casella will now own and maintain the new totes, assuming responsibility for their upkeep and repair for the duration of the contract. Previously, the city’s Department of Public Works (DPW) handled maintenance on the totes it owned. However, DPW will continue to manage the green recycling totes, which are not part of the updated contract. Restaino had voiced reservations earlier this year about the cost of replacing the existing totes using city funds, warning that such a purchase could necessitate a hike in the current user fee, which has remained at $181 annually since 2019. “This agreement helps us avoid burdening residents with an increased fee while ensuring they receive improved equipment,” Restaino noted in a memo to the council. Despite the mayor’s support, the extension didn’t receive unanimous approval. Council Member Donta Myles strongly opposed the move, citing an uptick in service complaints since Casella took over from Modern Disposal Services. “Residents are calling about damaged totes, trash left behind, and containers dumped in the middle of the street,” Myles said. “Until Casella addresses these ongoing issues, I can’t support locking the city into a longer deal.” Council Chair James Perry and members Traci Bax, Brian Archie, and David Zajac all voted in favor of the extension. Casella’s contract began last year after Modern Disposal’s long-standing service contract expired. While the transition was meant to usher in improved collection and reliability, several residents and council members have raised concerns about service quality. • Over 29,000 Marijuana Plants Seized in Federal Drug Bust, Distribution to Niagara County

Photo courtesy of the Times of Wayne County A large-scale, unlicensed marijuana cultivation site in Wayne County has led to the arrest of two men and the seizure of more than 29,000 marijuana plants. Federal authorities on Monday, May 12th, arrested Ferrydoon M. Ardehali and Colby Riggle following an investigation that uncovered a sophisticated cannabis grow operation with ties to distribution in North Tonawanda and Clarence. According to court documents, the business supplied marijuana to multiple other cannabis-related companies despite lacking any state-issued cultivation license. Task force agent Cory Higgins, with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), submitted an affidavit stating that Ardehali admitted to owning the grow site and confirmed he had no authorization from New York State to produce marijuana. Investigators seized 29,406 marijuana plants from six separate grow rooms in addition to approximately 3,700 pounds of processed marijuana. Both Ardehali and Riggle appeared in U.S. District Court in Buffalo where they were formally charged with manufacturing and possessing with intent to distribute 1,000 or more marijuana plants, a federal offense that could carry a sentence of over a decade in prison. No business connected to the operation, including Integrity Farms & Greenhouses Inc., had a state license for cultivating either cannabis or hemp. During his court appearance, Ardehali, a U.K. citizen, explained that he had once operated a homeless shelter in New York City but closed it to pursue a legal cannabis venture. He said he and his partners purchased the 26-acre farm for $1.4 million, with $850,000 still owed to the former owner. Additionally, he disclosed a personal debt load nearing $900,000, including $84,000 in credit card debt accumulated in an attempt to sustain the struggling grow facility. Ardehali expressed that his financial situation deteriorated dramatically after entering the cannabis industry, particularly when his partners ceased contributing to operational costs. • Unexplained Aerial Sighting in Upstate New York Raises Questions

An unusual airborne sighting in Painted Post, New York, has sparked intrigue following a string of similar reports across the state involving mysterious objects in the sky. The latest incident was submitted to the National UFO Reporting Center and details an encounter that allegedly took place on May 2nd. According to the report, a resident observed a silent, black, disc-shaped object traveling overhead during daylight hours. The witness described the object as being comparable in size to a car, lacking any lights or sound, and showing no visible propulsion or signs of instability as it moved across the sky. What stood out to the observer was the object's smooth and steady motion. It reportedly glided into low-lying clouds before vanishing from sight, leaving no trace. The witness emphasized the object's round shape and the absence of any typical characteristics associated with known aircraft such as wings, noise, or flashing lights. While this sighting is one of many from across New York State in recent months, it's important to note that such reports are anecdotal and often lack physical evidence or corroboration. Though some earlier claims from the region have included extreme assertions - such as abductions - no verifiable proof has been presented in those instances. • PETA Pushes Back Against Niagara Falls Fireworks

Niagara Falls Tourism’s decision to launch 151 consecutive nights of fireworks this summer has sparked backlash from animal rights organization PETA, which argues the nightly pyrotechnic displays pose serious threats to animals, the environment, and noise-sensitive individuals. In a recent effort to pressure the tourism board into rethinking its approach, PETA mailed a provocative package to the organization’s Board of Directors and CEO Janice Thomson. The delivery included a laser light projector, two drones, and a vintage Niagara Falls poster. The contents were meant to symbolize quieter, more animal-friendly alternatives to traditional fireworks. Branded with the slogan “You Can Wow, Without the Pow,” the campaign aims to persuade tourism officials to end the nightly explosions in favor of less disruptive technologies such as drone shows or coordinated laser displays. The organization also included a novelty noise button labeled “Niagara FAILS Animals,” featuring audio clips mimicking the chaos animals endure during fireworks such as dogs howling, tires screeching, and birds colliding with buildings. PETA warns that the nightly fireworks have harmful consequences beyond entertainment. The organization cites reports of companion animals breaking through windows or jumping fences in panic - many of whom are never found again. Wild animals, startled by the booms, often run into traffic leading to accidents and fatalities. The displays also contribute to pollution by emitting toxins such as lead, aluminum, and sulfur that can spike local air pollution levels by as much as 42%. To date, more than 90,000 people have joined PETA’s petition urging Niagara Falls officials to eliminate the fireworks and explore safer, environmentally friendly alternatives. The group continues to advocate for an end to what it calls “traumatizing spectacles” and promotes a vision of tourism that celebrates the natural wonder of the Falls without inflicting harm on animals or the ecosystem. • Centennial Park Feasibility Review Still in Progress Says Niagara Falls Mayor

Niagara Falls Mayor Robert Restaino has confirmed that the City is still waiting on a final version of a long-anticipated feasibility report for his proposed $165 million Centennial Park development. The assessment, being conducted by the Florida-based Sports Facilities Advisory LLC, was commissioned in 2024 to evaluate the viability of the large-scale sports and entertainment complex. Speaking to the media on Tuesday at a press briefing held at the Cambria Hotel, Restaino described the current document as an incomplete draft. He said the consultants are continuing to refine key data points, including market demographics and financial projections, before presenting final conclusions to stakeholders. The feasibility study will examine the potential economic impact of the multi-use venue which is envisioned to draw visitors from a regional population of roughly 15 million within a two-hour radius. However, it remains unclear whether the initial findings support or discourage moving forward with the project. The analysis is being paid for through funds provided by Empire State Development and National Grid, with the consulting firm being retained at a cost of up to $146,000. When finalized, the report is expected to offer insight into the complex’s long-term sustainability, particularly as the city tries to improve its year-round tourism and event-hosting infrastructure. Centennial Park, as envisioned by Restaino’s administration, would be anchored by a 6,000 to 7,000 seat arena. The broader site concept also includes a secondary arena for smaller events, a seasonal splash pad/ice rink, and a multi-level parking facility that would incorporate outdoor recreational features like a rock climbing wall and rooftop entertainment space. The city has identified a 10-acre parcel at Falls Street and 10th Street as the desired site. However, ongoing legal disputes over ownership with Niagara Falls Redevelopment (NFR) have delayed acquisition efforts. Niagara Falls officials claim they already hold rights to half the site, alleging that NFR failed to legally convert those acres from state-owned parkland. The total construction estimate submitted to federal officials in 2022 puts the project’s price tag at $165 million with $122 million of that projected to come from state sources. The land acquisition is expected to cost about $10 million. While the proposed venue does not currently have a permanent sports team tenant, Restaino recently met with representatives from the Ontario Hockey League who are exploring expansion into the U.S. The league is reportedly considering Niagara Falls as a possible location for a new or relocated team. Restaino indicated that the league has shown strong interest in bringing a franchise to the city if the arena materializes. While no formal agreement has been announced, the mayor characterized the talks as encouraging. Centennial Park Feasibility Review Still in Progress Says Niagara Falls Mayor

A 23-year-old Buffalo woman has admitted responsibility for a deadly crash that occurred last fall resulting in the death of a pedestrian. Niyonna Cunningham entered a guilty plea on Monday to a charge of second-degree vehicular manslaughter stemming from a November 28th, 2024, incident in which authorities say she was intoxicated behind the wheel. The crash happened around 10pm at the intersection of Boehm Place and Bailey Avenue. Cunningham, who was driving a Ford SUV with an infant passenger, struck 62-year-old Madonna Bishop. • Two Weekend Shootings Prompt Community Response on 19th Street

Niagara Falls Police Department File Photo Two separate shootings over the weekend near a frequently troubled corner in Niagara Falls have stirred community concern and spurred a local anti-violence group into action. On Tuesday, members of SNUG, a violence prevention program focused on curbing gun-related incidents, organized a rally at the intersection of 19th Street and Walnut Avenue (an area known for repeated criminal activity including shootings, robberies, prostitution, and etc.). The gathering followed two shooting incidents that occurred Sunday in the parking lot of the Coastal gas station located at that intersection. The first shooting reportedly took place early Sunday morning and resulted in one individual sustaining a gunshot wound to the leg. Hours later, just after 5pm, a second incident occurred at the same location. In that case, approximately seven shots were fired. Although no injuries were reported, a bullet struck and damaged the windshield of a vehicle belonging to a gas station employee. Prior to Sunday, the city had gone 229 consecutive days without a shooting, contributing to an overall decline in gun-related incidents locally and statewide. According to recent data, New York has seen a 53% decrease in shootings in 2025 compared to previous years. SNUG, whose title is “guns” spelled backward, works from a public health approach, emphasizing outreach and conflict mediation to prevent gun violence. Their team regularly canvasses high-risk areas and engages with individuals between the ages of 13 and 25 who are considered at risk for being involved in violent incidents. Each outreach worker supports six clients and helps connect them to mentorship, positive social experiences, and services such as counseling, re-housing, and substance abuse treatment. Since opening a Niagara Falls office at 1702 Pine Avenue in 2023, SNUG has expanded its reach through a partnership with Community Missions of Niagara Frontier, Inc. Together, they operate additional services from a location at 1570 Buffalo Avenue. Niagara Falls was one of several communities in New York to receive state funding to support SNUG’s efforts. In 2022, the city was awarded $500,000 through a public safety initiative led by Governor Kathy Hochul aimed at bolstering community-based solutions to gun violence. Residents seeking more information or support through the Niagara Falls SNUG program can call (716) 285-3403 extension 5422. Two Weekend Shootings Prompt Community Response on 19th Street

  • Two Arrested as Niagara Falls Police Target Drug Hotspots in Anti-gun Violence Operation

Stock photo Two individuals were taken into custody last week as part of a focused law enforcement sweep targeting violent crime and illegal drug activity in Niagara Falls. The operation was conducted under New York State’s Gun Involved Violence Elimination (GIVE) initiative, which aims to reduce gun-related incidents through intelligence-driven policing and targeted community interventions. With support from the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office and County Probation Officers, Niagara Falls Police executed simultaneous raids at two suspected drug locations: one on the 500 block of 20th Street and another on the 1000 block of 19th Street. While the main suspects were not found at either site, officers recovered various forms of evidence. At the 545 20th Street address, authorities confiscated quantities of suspected cocaine and fentanyl, ammunition, and drug-related paraphernalia. Detectives noted that the residence had long drawn complaints from neighbors who reported frequent gatherings and alleged illegal gambling and drug transactions. Though the individual originally targeted by law enforcement wasn’t present, 47-year-old Claude Wilson was arrested on an unrelated outstanding warrant issued by Niagara Falls City Court. Police then spotted 30-year-old Dominique Hilson observing law enforcement activity from across the street. She was also taken into custody after officers confirmed she was wanted in Erie County. The second raid was conducted at 1015 19th Street which had previously condemned by the city. Here, officers seized additional ammunition and drug paraphernalia. This property, as the previous one, had been the subject of multiple neighborhood complaints tied to suspected narcotics distribution. Both addresses had been marked as “priority locations” using data provided by the Niagara Intelligence & Crime Analysis Center (NICAC), a key component in the GIVE initiative’s strategy of targeting crime hotspots through real-time data. The operation comes amid continued state investment in the GIVE program with Niagara Falls receiving $1,228,947 for the 2024-25 fiscal year. In addition to direct law enforcement support, the grant finances a Falls Criminal Investigation Division detective dedicated solely to non-fatal shooting cases and supports community outreach programs aimed at long-term violence prevention. • Toronto to Niagara Hovercraft Service Takes Major Step Forward

A long-discussed hovercraft service linking Toronto and Niagara is finally moving closer to becoming a reality after Hoverlink Ontario announced Thursday it has secured a critical 30-year agreement to build a terminal along Toronto’s waterfront. The slip, located at the south dock wall of Billy Bishop Airport, will serve as the departure point for the high-speed hovercrafts, which promise to deliver passengers to Niagara’s Port Weller in just 30 minutes (a trip that typically takes over 90 minutes by car). “This milestone clears a major hurdle for launching North America’s first large-scale hovercraft transit route,” Hoverlink said in an official statement. “Our team has worked tirelessly for over a decade to make this vision a reality.” The announcement marks a pivotal development in a project that has seen multiple delays. Hoverlink, originally eyeing a 2023 launch, now estimates that operations could begin in about two years due to the remaining planning and manufacturing work. “We still have a lot of work ahead,” said Erika Potrz, Hoverlink’s Chief Operating Officer and interim president. “But this is a transformative project, and we’re closer than ever. We believe this service will reshape travel in Southern Ontario.” Hoverlink’s vessels are designed to carry 180 passengers and operate year-round regardless of weather conditions. The company also emphasized the eco-friendly nature of hovercraft travel highlighting its low environmental footprint compared to traditional transportation options. “This is about more than fast travel,” Potrz said. “It’s about creating accessible, fun, and sustainable transportation that connects two of the most dynamic regions in Ontario.” On the Niagara end, the company has already secured a 50-year lease with the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation for its Port Weller terminal, which is considered "shovel-ready" for construction. Local leaders and tourism advocates are hopeful that the service will significantly boost economic activity across the Golden Horseshoe. “It opens the door to new tourism, business, and commuter opportunities,” said a representative from the Niagara tourism board. “This could be a game-changer.” While no specific launch date has been confirmed, the progress signals new momentum for a project that once seemed like little more than a dream. • Niagara Falls City Council Reverses Course, Brings Back Pothole Killer

Screenshot from WGRZ After weeks of debate and a previously deadlocked vote, the Niagara Falls City Council narrowly approved a dual-approach plan aimed at tackling the city’s widespread pothole issues. In a 3-2 vote during Wednesday’s meeting, the council authorized a $200,470 initiative that includes bringing back the “Pothole Killer” machine and paying for overtime work by the Department of Public Works (DPW) road crew. Council Chair James Perry (D), along with Councilmembers Traxi Bax (R) and David Zajac (R), supported the measure, while Councilmembers Donta Myles (D) and Brian Archie (D) remained opposed, citing concerns about cost and effectiveness. The approved plan, proposed by Mayor Robert Restaino, calls for contracting Patch Management Inc. to deploy its Pothole Killer truck. The city will pay $99,600 for the truck, operator, and 100 tons of asphalt with funds pulled from the city’s Tribal Revenue reserves. In addition to the machine, the plan includes allocating $100,870 in tribal funds to cover overtime costs for DPW workers. Over a span of 21 days, city crews will work an additional four hours per day to perform traditional hot asphalt patching, which is considered more durable than the Pothole Killer’s spray technique. Council Chair Perry described the two-pronged approach as a test to evaluate which repair method delivers better results. “This is something different this year — let’s see what works,” he said. However, not all council members were convinced. Councilman Archie expressed frustration with what he called “front-loading the overtime,” saying, “I want the potholes fixed too, but I don’t think this is the right way.” Myles, who also voted against the plan, criticized the lack of data supporting the machine’s effectiveness. “We’ve seen these streets. If the machine hasn’t worked before, why would we expect different results now?” he asked. Mayor Restaino stressed the urgency of the repairs, warning that without action now potholes may remain unaddressed as the road crew shifts to the city’s scheduled paving and street repairs in the spring and summer months. “We only have one road crew,” he said. “Once they move to repaving, pothole work stops.” The city has yet to announce when the Pothole Killer will be deployed, which streets will be prioritized, or how many potholes are expected to be repaired. • 'The Turtle' in Niagara Falls Listed Among America's Most Endangered Historic Sites

A distinctive and long-vacant building in Niagara Falls—locally known as “The Turtle”—has been recognized as one of the nation’s most endangered historic places, according to a list released Wednesday by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Located on Rainbow Boulevard, the 67,000-square-foot structure was originally constructed in 1981 as the Native American Heritage Center. The building, noted for its unusual design inspired by the Haudenosaunee creation story—featuring a domed shell-like roof and circular “eye” windows—has stood empty since 1995 following financial difficulties that led to its closure. Now owned by Niagara Falls Redevelopment, LLC, the building was at one point included in plans for a high-rise hotel. However, no such development has taken place, leaving preservationists concerned about its future. In February 2024, the Niagara Falls Historic Preservation Committee recommended that The Turtle receive landmark designation, which would provide protections against demolition or alteration. However, the proposal was rejected by the city in March, frustrating local efforts to safeguard the building. If it had been granted landmark status, any changes to the structure would have required approval from the committee. With its inclusion on the National Trust’s 2024 list, The Turtle joins other at-risk sites across the U.S. that are considered historically and culturally significant, but vulnerable due to neglect, development pressures, or lack of legal protection. Supporters hope the designation will reignite public interest and rally support for preserving the iconic structure before it’s too late. However, it does not prevent alterations, demolition or other changes to the structure. 'The Turtle' in Niagara Falls Listed Among America's Most Endangered Historic Sites

  • Illinois Man Accused of Attempted Child Abduction at Buffalo School

Stock photo A 30-year-old man from Illinois is facing multiple charges after attempting to abduct a child from a Buffalo school earlier this year. The incident has prompted both legal action and scrutiny from the community over school security measures. Shane Cronin, of Lombard, Illinois, was arraigned Wednesday on charges including attempted kidnapping, attempted assault, burglary, and endangering the welfare of a child. He entered a plea of not guilty and is being held without bail according to the Erie County District Attorney's Office. The incident occurred on February 11th at Dr. Charles R. Drew Science Magnet School, which shares a building with the Buffalo Museum of Science. Prosecutors say Cronin entered the school without authorization and attempted to engage with two children inside the building. Authorities allege he attempted to lure one of them away before being confronted by a staff member. When the school employee intervened and instructed Cronin to leave, he punched her and knocked her to the ground. A security officer then stepped in resulting in Cronin fleeing the scene. He was apprehended shortly after by law enforcement near the school premises. Cronin’s defense attorney, Daniel DuBois, suggested his client may have been experiencing a mental health crisis at the time of the incident. He stated that Cronin initially entered the museum legally and then somehow accessed the school through an internal connection. DuBois noted that no weapons or tools were found on Cronin or in his vehicle, which police searched following his arrest. “From what we know, the staff responded appropriately when they encountered an unauthorized individual inside the school,” DuBois said. Despite this, the breach has raised concerns over how Cronin was able to enter a facility housing students in grades three through eight. The Buffalo Public School District has yet to publicly address the specifics of how he gained entry or what, if any, security protocols failed during the incident. In the wake of the event, the Buffalo Board of Education has initiated an independent review. This move came after a Buffalo police detective publicly discussed the case on a podcast and suggested district officials may have attempted to suppress details of the incident. District Attorney Michael Keane acknowledged the detective’s remarks and confirmed an ongoing investigation. “We are thoroughly investigating the facts while ensuring accountability and justice,” Keane said. “Our priority is the safety of children and the integrity of the judicial process.” No trial date has been set and the investigation remains active. • Jury Finds Juan Ubiles Found Guilty of 2023 Niagara Falls Murder in Less than 60 Minutes

Stock photo A Niagara Falls man was quickly convicted of murder on Tuesday following a brief jury deliberation that capped a high-profile homicide trial stemming from a deadly shooting last summer. A jury composed of eight women and four men took just 55 minutes to find 39-year-old Juan Ubiles guilty of second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon in connection with the June 19th, 2023, killing of Gregory Vincent. Vincent, 44, was shot multiple times while fleeing down 18th Street in Niagara Falls. Surveillance cameras from a nearby store captured audio and video of the incident, which was shown to the jury last week. Vincent was found by responding officers with multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center. Ubiles now faces a potential sentence of 40 years to life in prison. During the trial’s final day, Ubiles took the stand in his own defense. He claimed the fatal encounter was the result of long-standing tension and violent confrontations between him and Vincent dating back over a decade. He said Vincent, who had a child with Ubiles’ wife, had been a persistent threat and described an earlier incident in 2010 in which he fired shots at Vincent’s home — an episode he characterized as a moment of blind rage. “I had a blackout and took the law into my own hands,” Ubiles told the court. Ubiles recounted feeling fearful whenever he crossed paths with Vincent. He testified that on the day of the shooting, he approached Vincent near a corner store at 18th Street and Niagara Avenue to talk, but panicked when Vincent exited his car. He said he “blacked out” again and couldn’t remember much about what happened next. However, under cross-examination by First Assistant Niagara County District Attorney Doreen Hoffmann, Ubiles admitted to making threatening statements. Surveillance footage corroborated Hoffmann’s account of Ubiles confronting Vincent aggressively. At one point, Ubiles can be heard saying, “I don’t put [people] in jail, I put them in the dirt.” The prosecution argued that the shooting was deliberate, showing video of Ubiles pulling a gun and chasing Vincent through the neighborhood before firing multiple shots. Hoffmann emphasized that Ubiles showed no signs of fear but instead instigated the confrontation and pursued Vincent after the initial gunfire. “This wasn’t self-defense. This was calculated aggression,” Hoffmann said in her closing argument. Sentencing for Ubiles is expected in the coming weeks. • Chelsea Hacker Remembered for Her Compassion and Joy After Fatal Tonawanda Crash

The woman who lost her life in a tragic car accident Monday on Twin Cities Memorial Highway has been identified as Chelsea Hacker, a dedicated nurse, animal lover, and vibrant soul remembered by those who knew her for her deep compassion and boundless energy. According to City of Tonawanda Police, Hacker, 30-years-old, died after her Chevrolet Trailblazer was rear-ended by another vehicle around 5:15pm. She was transported to DeGraff Memorial Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. The crash remains under investigation and no charges had been filed as of Tuesday morning. Chelsea began her nursing journey in early 2020 and quickly became a respected caregiver at Buffalo General Hospital. Her exceptional commitment to patient care earned her formal recognition with a nursing excellence award. But those closest to her knew her greatest reward came from the impact she had on others’ lives. Raised in Buffalo, Chelsea’s childhood was shaped by a loving, multigenerational family that included her mother Valerie Wieczorek, grandparents Doreen and Nick Andrejczuk, and great-grandmother Frances Cyrankowski. Known from an early age for her bright personality and spirited curiosity, Chelsea lived life with enthusiasm—from joining the diving team without knowing how to swim to leaving long, heartfelt messages for her grandmother just to share a thought or moment. She brought that same energy and warmth to everyone around her. Her siblings—Thomas, Kennedy, Luke, and Riley—remember her as a protective, joyful presence, always willing to offer comfort or a laugh when it was needed most. Chelsea had a wide array of passions. She loved amusement parks, animals—especially her dogs Gauge, Tex, and Lucky—and artistic expression, often channeling her creativity through painting and murals. One of her proudest artistic contributions was a mural she painted in a friend’s nursery. Her personal life flourished when she met Tom, the man who would become her partner and soulmate. Though she had once declared herself "against marriage," her relationship with Tom changed everything. Together, they shared dreams, adventures, and laughter—from sports events and vacations to quiet nights in. Chelsea was ready to build a future with him rooted in love. Chelsea also had a bold, adventurous streak. She enjoyed casinos, music, and living life on her own terms. Those who knew her best describe her as the life of every room—quick-witted, kind-hearted, and unafraid to live fully and love fiercely. Chelsea’s passing leaves a deep void in the hearts of her family, friends, coworkers, and patients. Her legacy, however, endures in the memories, stories, and everyday kindnesses she inspired. In lieu of flowers, her family requests that donations be made in her memory to the SPCA Serving Erie County. A link to Chelsea's obituary can be found HERE .
